A Travel Story

My name is Dan Bell. Because I teach online, I am able to travel. Scroll down to the bottom to see the 49 countries I have visited.

I am a patent lawyer and I teach patent processes to engineers in India that perform litigation and prosecution services for lawyers in the USA and Europe. The courses include issue checklists, reading materials (statutory law, case law, CFRs, MPEP), process steps, sample completed claim charts and other deliverables, quality metrics, and practical and theoretical questions. Engineers must pass a comprehensive final examination before they are certified to perform each process for lawyers.

To learn more about my teaching and consulting services please visit Bell Certified or view our course summaries. You can also view my linked-in work profile, my Facebook page, my Couch Surfing page, or send me a message here. I am teaching law now and not offering to act as your attorney so please do not send any confidential information to me.

The George Enescu Museum On Sunday I decided to walk north on Calea Victoriei from city center, Bucharest. I had seen a large park on the map and I wanted to see if people were enjoying the Romania on this perfect Sunday. About half way to the park, I noticed this striking mansion with an extremely ornate facade, even by Romanian standards. It had a wrought Iron fence that was open and no signage forbidding entry. I also noticed the front door was open. I called out but nobody answered, "Hey! Is anybody home?" No answer and no dogs barked. So I walked through the open gate and up the steps into the open front door of this great mansion. Life is an adventure if you have courage and act. Inside was a female guard who ... read more

June 17th 2013

I am on the train heading north out of Bucharest. At first it was farmland but now it is turning into rolling foothills. I am going to a town in the mountains called Brasov. There is a ski resort nearby so it is likely to have a decent incline. Dracula's Castle is near there. I have decided I want to live off the blood of women for eternity, so I am trying to find a vampire who can get that done for me. I hear that three bites of my neck is all it takes to make me into a vampire. Apparently, you have to find an honest vampire, because they can just kill you if they want. Maybe if I hang out in the pubs around Brasov, I can find a vampire that looks like ... read more

When I came to Varna Bulgaria to see the Black Sea, I planned on renting a car and heading south to see some of the other beach towns and some Greek ruins. But when I saw that I could work at the beach while chilling to some great food and music, I decided not to go anywhere. A week sure goes by fast at the beach, huh? The typical day was getting up at 7 am, working in my apartment until about noon, then walking down to the beach for lunch. Then I would just stay and work on the sand until 5 or 6pm. It was a nice routine. I also wandered about Varna and took in the sights and did plenty of people watching at night. There was all sorts of music and food ... read more

Bulgaria is the 50th country I have visited. I am not taking any of this for granted, I understand how fortunate I am. While in Bulgaria, I got to meet the patent drafting team that Sunjay started in Bulgaria. They are really a great bunch of people, so hats off to Sunjay and all the work everyone has done. We went over some practical patent priority law problems that are quickly becoming more relevant as the AIA is implemented and then we went out for dinner and a walk about the city. I was sad to say goodbye to the team. They were really fun people, and so funny. Presently, I am on the train traveling from Sofia, Bulgaria, to the beach in Bulgaria at Varna. Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, and Varna is on ... read more

I had the privilege of spending the last 4 weeks of my father’s life with him. My father led a very interesting life full of passion and experience. He was one of the most successful people I ever knew. He had almost no interest in amassing money, though he had as much money as he needed to live life according to his own design. My father was a Jesuit trained scholar. The smartest people I ever knew said he was smartest man they ever knew. In his entire education including his PHD and MD, he received all As and one B. Success for him was running 30 or so marathons at the outer edge of his capability, skiing down a double diamond at the edge of control, cooking a bowl of chili so hot your eyes ... read more

After leaving Miami I made a few quick stops around the west and northwest USA, and then flew over to Thailand for a few days before heading to Cambodia. While in Cambodia, I spent about a week in Phnom Penh and then about 10 days in and around Siem Reap. This pictures in this blog are in and around Phnom Penh. Notable things in Phnom Penh are the Royal Palace, The Killing Fields, the S-21 prison camp, the National Museum (and the nightly performances there), and About 2 million Cambodians were killed by their countrymen in the chaos that followed the Vietnam war: “The Khmer Rouge regime arrested and eventually executed almost everyone suspected of connections with the former government or with foreign governments, as well as professionals and intellectuals. After visiting Steve in Tampa I headed over to check out South Florida, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and South Beach. I didn’t want to leave the US right away because I knew I had a meeting in the USA in January or February. Why not wait somewhere warm? Well, that meeting is set for next week so I’ll be leaving Miami. I’ll probably head to SE Asia within a week or so, but I still haven’t booked my ticket. I have been working mainly and not doing much sight-seeing. I guess I have been here before so I have been just enjoying the weather and working on various projects for my consulting business. It has been nice running on the beach and having all the conveniences of American life. I have had some time to take ... read more
