Alright! This is gonna be a good posting :o) So what have i been up to the last couple days? (god it feels like WEEKS!!) Well the first day was just to settle into the hostel and meet all the other volunteers. There are about 15 of us in total, some Germans, Canadians (3 of us from Ontario, 1 from Montreal, 1 from BC), one Norwegian girl, and some dutch people! Everybody is super nice and we're all getting along fairly well. Although spending 24/7 together has definitely starting to take a toll, we are all spending more alone time and trying not to be grumpy with each other because we're tired! Speaking of which, SOOO many people are stressing out about not being able to keep in good contact with home. That really kinda annoys ... read more

Hi All, Just a quick note to say that we have arrived. Its an awsome place... We are staying at the Ashanti Lodge, which has awsome views of Table Mountain. It is incredible! We had a good first day yesterday, took a wonder down to the waterfront. We forgot how hot it was and both got a little burnt! So now I have the red head syndrome! Looks very unattractive! We have learnt our lesson, so thats good. We spent today at Table Mountain, after yesterday it closed while we were in the que due to strong winds! We got up early and headed up for breakfast! It was a great experience. So clear and such wonderful views, over the city, waterfront, lions head and where the two great oceans meet. So after a few blisters ... read more

Nile Cruising Leaving Aswan, I boarded the splendid Thebes Nile cruiser (imagine a floating box) for our two-night journey up to Luxor. Compared to my accommodations in Aswan, the cruiser was a big step up. This baby was no Queen Mary, but the cabins were clean and nicely appointed with awesome views of the Nile River. After checking-in, I quickly acclimated with some sunbathing on the astro-turf covered top deck. With so few passengers on the ship, it was easy to determine there was a large contingent of French, some Germans, a few Asians, English, a couple of Americans and a smattering of other nations represented. Our three ports of call along the way included cities of Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Esna with each city warranting shore leave of about an hour or two for site ... read more

Hello all. Can't believe its only two weeks to go for me (if I manage to get my flights sorted...). Its been a really good week and a half or so. Last week we did some project work then went white water rafting and sight seeing in Uganda! It was awesome. We spent three days there in Jinja which is the source of the Nile and about two hours drive over the border with Kenya. On the first day we visited the source and then Bujugali Falls and chilled out in our nice hostel. The next day we went white water rafting on the white nile, one of the worlds top five rafting destinations. It was mental. We had a crazy (and apparently hungover) guide called Tom from Scotland and six of us from the charity ... read more

Started our advanced Course today The advanced consists of 5 dives, our first dive was a compulsory dive which takes you down to a depth of 30M, we did this at a dive site called Ras Kati, Steve Hinton was our instructor and before we took our first deep dive he asked us on the surface to do a short test including some basic questions and some maths questions. this was timed on the surface and then again at 30m below. The objective was to show us how nitrogen narcosis affects the brain and slows your reactions down. I did the same test at 30m and it took me 25 seconds longer to answer the questions even though it felt like i had done it at warp speed! Another thing when you at this depth is ... read more

Kat writes: Having got another little car and a few camping supplies we were on our way to Kruger National Park and a big reason for coming to South Africa. Arriving around midday the first thing we did was get to the nearest bush camp to try and book some accommodation, only to be told that practically everything was already taken. Ek! But with a little bit of brain power and an 8hr journey tomorrow. It was doable. We were ‘in’ for the next 6 nights, which later turned to 8, moving to a different camp everyday to see just as much of Wales as we could. Sorry, Kruger, but it is the size of Wales! Well, bar a few days, the routine pretty much went like this - up and out for around 5am to ... read more

Good Lord. Marrakech is utterly wonderful. Who wouldn't love wandering lost through mazes of narrow, dark, red clay alleyways (and souks) occassionally coming across blindingly sunny openings where tooth pullers smile at you and snake charmers wrap pythons around your neck sans asking?... read more
