Hey guys, just a quick note and some pics... we did the cape peninsula tour today and it was stunning. I've never seen so many mountains, valleys, beaches, and wild animals! Today I saw, in the wild, an ostrich, some zebra, baboons, african penguins (super cute oh my god!) and assorted lizards and birds. What a cool place! And it was warm today with a strong sun so now my face is a little "tanned" :o) Anyway, enjoy these pics, i'll put up more later but internet cafe is so slow it takes sooo long to upload pics.

The clock is ticking. Soon my exams will be over and I will be embarking on the most wonderful trip through Russia, Europe and the UK. For my 21st birthday I recieved this travel opportunity as a gift from my parents. With some extra savings, hard work and the assistance of some family members, I am now able to prepare myself for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I have already done most of my packing. I will fly to Namibia on 23 November to visit my friends and family and then I will return to South Africa on 30 November. I fly to Russia on 1 December. I have been planning this trip since March of 2006 and can not believe that it is finally time for it to become a reality. So with 5 ... read more

Africa November 16th 2006

Hi everyone, I know, the entries are all over the place this week and most of you probably wonder where the hell I am now. So let's recap: South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and back to South Africa last week. Leaving Joburg and the comfort of my posh hotel was a bit hard I must admit, but another adventure was waiting for me: the untamed river safari in Zambia and Botswana. I flew into Lusaka (Zambia) last Wednesday and met my new group the next day. Total we are 12 people, about half from Germany and half from the UK - our guides are from South Africa and Zimbabwe, Shyrod and Sifiso, great guys, very laid back and a great sense of humor - which has come in handy considering our truck broke down two days ago ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Lake Eyasi November 15th 2006

Lake Eyasi is one of a series of salt lakes near the Ngorogoro highlands. The plan was to camp near the lake and visit the Hadzabe tribe, a group of people culturally similar to the San Bushman. Our drive took us through some rough roads, which had James wishing (for the twentieth time) that he had brought his mountain bike. The campsite was fairly basic, but instead of bugs flying onto our plates, we had monkeys jumping onto our tent. Once again, camp was set up, we had lunch, then we set off to locate the Hadzabe. Our guide/translator was from the nearby Datoga village and he trades with the Hadzabe tribe so speaks their language. We drove for half an hour to the valley where the Hadzabe live. They are nomadic so do move around, ... read more

Africa » Swaziland November 15th 2006

Sadly the birthday celebrations have now ended but I have milked it in true "Claire style" and loved every minute! Last Saturday I had a joint party at the Swaziland Backpackers Lodge with a couple of other girls. Being as the decorations consisted of blown up condoms and surgical gloves, it was pretty much guaranteed to be a pretty good night and it didn't disappoint. Cocktails on tap, being thrown in the pool, dancing till my shoes broke (literally), and a dip in the local swimming pool/Jacuzzi finished the evening at around 8am! But wait, clearly that wasn't enough; the celebrations had to continue... I had another random 'shot/porn' party on Friday then went camping for the weekend to the San River Dam where we experienced the most intense/amazing/frightening storms ever. The tents blew down, a ... read more
