Who is this little one standing at the door? Have you ever had a bad day, but there was one little face that made you smile! Have you ever known of someone who had been delt a hard life, but through it all continued to show God's love and grace in everything they did? Have you ever just felt like Life wasn't fair? Have you ever wanted to help someone, so bad, but there just wasn't much you could do? Life is a daily challenge here in Tanzania. Life is filled with harsh circumstances, and here in Africa we encounter trials and troubles daily in the lives of the people we come into contact with, befriend, and adore. Its hard to see someone you love living a hard life, suffering unjustly, and there beng very little ... read more

Just for the purpose of people that think going to Skegness for a Summer holiday is going 'travelling' we'll start by explaining exactly wot an 'Overland Truck Trip' is all about. Basically you pay a one off fee at the beginning and most of your costs are included for the entire duration of the trip. This includes travel, accomodation (tents), food, activites and cups of rank tea. Refer to the photo for what the Truck looks like, it has many fold out functions such as kitchen facilities but sadly no toilets. When you are in the middle of nowhere for hours on end this of course becomes interesting. Squat and Squirt i think the saying goes!!!! We met the Truck in Joburg at a place called 'Africa Centre Lodge' where we spent the previous night. This ... read more

Internet Free Zone ! Am safe and am now back in Malawi abd currently running round like a headless chicken trying to get more equipment up from Lilongwe to Nkhata Bay. I'd forgotten just how slow and expensive internet access is - really involves a 2 hour round trip to Mzuzu. So, just wanted to let everyone know that I'm fine, that me and Katherine are settling into Njaya Lodge, that things will calm down with work as soon as I start training on Friday and that the rains arrived last night - on the exact day that everyone told me they would arrive ! I'm told the mozzies will be out and about by Friday - oh good ! Will try and write some offline blogs and post as soon as possible. ... read more

Memphis, Saqqara & Aswan Egypt For my last afternoon in Cairo I decided to squeeze in a visit to the ancient sites of Memphis and Saqqara located about 30 miles south of the city. Memphis was one of the great cities of the ancient world but has now all but disappeared from centuries of pillaging and floods. It’s a fairly unimpressive site with only a few significant monuments and statues of Ramses II. Nearby at Saqqara is the Step pyramid built for Zoser. The step pyramid is significant because it is Egypt’s (and the worlds) first stone monument. At most of these sites, the tourism cashiers like to double dip...they charge you to enter the grounds which you assume is the full admission, then once you park and walk up to the actual site, they charge ... read more

Hey everybody!!!!!!!!!!! After that ridiculously long trip, i finally got here, the Ashanti Lodge (it's actually a hostel, and a very nice one!) in Capetown! (I'd like to take this time to apologize to everybody who saw me in the last week i was in Canada... i was pretty agitated and cranky and just generally not myself (read: stressed out) and i know i kinda took it out on you guys, so i'm sorry... and thank you for putting up with me!) I would like to say to Son and Shel (and Sandeep! and of course everybody else) that the exact moment when i got excited was on the plane, when the pilot came on and said "we are now currently leaving Europe and flying over Chad" and I looked out my window and was like.... ... read more

The other morning I sat down at a table for breakfast with a couple of bananas, an orange, and a baguette. As I turned to pull up a chair I heard a crashing sound as a monkey FLEW over the table and landed on the other side of the room with my banana. Jerk. I’m back in Mamou for Teacher’s Conference. Education PCVs in math and science invited Guinean teachers from their villages to meet and discuss teaching techniques. The conference is a good idea since the traditional method of teaching here involves kids copying pages and pages of information from the board and then memorizing things without understanding them. The back of every notebook at the market has a multiplication table, along with an addition table, a subtraction table, and a division table, all of ... read more

Only 8 weeks until I leave for Ghana - I've been organising this trip for months, and am just looking forward to going now. I've had what seems like a hundred injections! I am going to do some voluntary work with a charity called Cross-cultural solutions, and will be working with children in a local school or day care centre. Not a clue what to expect so a bit nervous, but will keep you updated once I'm there!... read more

The Tsingy National Park, is a World Heritage Site and well worth the trip if you ever get the chance! I say that because we ummed and arrred about going because of the cost of the 4x4 necessary to get there, but were very glad we did. They are basically a huge collection of amazing limestone pinnacles. The Petits Tsingy around 40-50 feet high and the larger Grands Tsingy another group 20Km north which are more like 100-150 feet high. We spent 2 days climbing on, around and squeezing through these bizarre, sharp and tuneful rocks (they rang like metal when hit). The park is basically dry when open in winter, but closes in December for half the year due to the heavy rain which makes the place inaccessible and helps carve some more weird shapes. ... read more
