Africa » Egypt » Sinai » Dahab November 22nd 2006

Stuck in Horghada Leaving Luxor, I took a five hour bus trip across the Eastern Arabian desert and through the Red Sea Mountains to the coastal port town of Hurghada. This was to be a jumping off point for me to get over to the Sinai Peninsula, destination - Dahab, Egypt. I arrived into Hurghada Saturday evening and hoped to pass through quickly but unfortunately learned that the next high speed ferry across the Red Sea would be early Monday morning. I checked into my $7 per night hotel room and bided my time exploring the local bazaars and visiting the lone Western outpost in town, The Hard Rock Café. Again, like all the other towns so far, I seemed to be the lone American, amongst an array of European and Asian travelers, most of which ... read more

Coming back to Montreal wasn’t easy. But it’s normal. Traveling so far away for a few months at a time disconnects you from the day to day routine. And you drop in and out of other people’s lives, which move on, even when you’re not there. And you live afloat. Afloat of a monotonous life. It’s fun, exciting for sure. But uncomfortable sometimes. Like turbulence. Numerous inner conversations to be had. So much opportunity to grow. Grow, grow, grow. But a little lonely sometimes. But I’m on my way to Tanzania. Dar Es Salaam. Haven of Peace I believe. It means. Haven’t really slept in the last 48 hours. I just can’t manage to doze off like usual. Still over 7 hours to go… We’re surrounded. Prissy French tourists. They are really annoying and entertaining. They ... read more

THE RWANDA GENOCIDE "When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincable, but in the end, they always fall - think of it, always. Mahatma Gandhi ******************************************* I experienced some of the most horrific truths known to man today. I attended the International Tribunal for the Rwanda Genocide in Arusha over the past two days. Belguim Luietenant-Colonal Claise was testifying to the facts as he experienced them in Kigali, Rwanda in January of 1994 - a time when the country was on the brink of the genocide. Yes, 1994. These grotesque acts of evil seemed to happen while the world looked the other way and those that were not looking away intentionally were ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Nyanza Province » Sauri November 22nd 2006

I had the great fortune and privilege to visit Sauri Kenya last week -- some 40 km sort of northwest of Kisumu. Sauri has been on my list of sites to see before departing Kenya. It is one of the first UN Millennium Village projects. There are some 13 original sites spread throughout Africa and Asia - many more have morphed in the last couple of years - all selected due to extreme poverty, lack of infrastructure and unique environmental, ecological, and health care factors. The idea is these villages can be incubators for unique solutions to unique problems. Sauri was chosen because the lands were depleted of their nutrients and because of one of the highest prevalence rates of HIV/Aids, and Malaria on the continent. I am so grateful to my friend Anne-Marie of C-MEDA ... read more

So this blog has been a work in progress for about 2 weeks...i guess i have a lot of catching up to do. so here goes.. i know a while back i posted that i would be starting my internship at a migration related NGO, but due to a series of unfortunate events, i never started there and actually missed out on 3 weeks of potential internship time because the directors of the program here didn't have a back-up idea in place. So two weeks ago monday i had an interview of sorts at the "Ministre des Senegalais de l'Exterieur" to see if i could spend the remainder of the internship period, roughly 3 weeks, there. The director was mildly receptive of the idea, but enough so that my advisors from school wanted to go ahead ... read more

We were woken in the early hours by the shrill cry of the burglar alarm. Luckily, it was a false alarm, but it reminded me that security is a serious business in Nairobi. Within two minutes of the alarm going off there were three or four guards checking the premises. In the morning, Terry drove us out to the elephant orphanage to see the (cute) baby elephants. After that we went for a long, relaxed lunch at the touristy Carnivore restaurant (not a good place to eat if you’re vegetarian). It’s the ultimate meat-feast. Waiters bring around various meats that have been skewered on a sword and barbecued over an open fire. There was everything from the normal beef, chicken and lamb, to the more unusual crocodile, ostrich and even camel. The waiters keep bringing you ... read more

Africa » Morocco November 22nd 2006

From how the guidebooks describe it, arriving in Morocco by ferry is like jumping into the lion’s den with a bloody steak strapped to your leg. Even in Ceuta - a Spanish enclave on the North African coast, just minutes from the border - you’re primed for a pack of slick, hungry predators, eager to escort you from the ferry terminal to overpriced hotels in the wrong part of town. One even cautions you to “watch out for suspiciously over-friendly passengers,” which will - with apologies - explain my brusque behavior with at least one kind Moroccan onboard. It’s not like I’ve gotten better reports from friends on the ground. In Granada I met a traveler who’d just returned from a few days in Tangier. He’d decided to go on a whim, throwing caution to ... read more

Port Elizabeth is a bigger city about 2 hours from Port Alfred and about 50 years ahead! Our weekend here was brill!! I met a gorgeous South African man (although his parents were Spanish) called Luis who was one of Steven's friends. The four of us spent the weekend together eating and drinking! This place was great cos we could even go out on the beach and in the sea at midnight - so safe compared to Cape Town. After that we went to the casino and visited Luis' house which was a lovely house overlooking the sea. - I may well visit him again before I go home or may come to Cape Town! Great weekend but missing home and will be glad to be back for Christmas! -(Other placement fell through and a job ... read more
