Day Two- morning in hotel, eating sleeping and using pool! Sunset over the delta
Sunset over the delta
Our first night's safari walk we watched the sunset- beautiful! Then all the mosquitoes came out!
A hollowed out tree trunk boat took us to the beautiful conservation area that is the Okavango Delta; a river delta that is almost dried up (100years) but is still full of reeds and shallow water ways and of course , a variety of animal and plant life. This is a really special place. The government only let a certain number of tourists there and there are strict rules on no litter, no soaps and deoderants!! We weren't even allowed to leave fruit peel cos it wasn't native to the land. Each morning we were up at 5am for a three [View Full Entry]

Washing up at camp!
Watering hole at the delta
Safari walk

Up at 3:30am (after setting my alarm too early for the elphant ride) I watched the sunrise and then Alisa and I set off for our elephant ride at 5:30! We were hoisted up onto mummy elephant Mashumpi and we set off into the forest. It was a really comfy ride and we were closely followed by her little baby elephant which was just a few months old- cuuute! The elephants smelled a bit especially afterwards when we were allowed to feed them!- talk about early morning breath! We trekked through the scrub and then crossed the river, some of the [View Full Entry]

Hell on the water!! I'm sure you know that I'm not one for extreme adventure. So why on earth would I jump in a boat and ride the "best rapids in the world" today along with 6 other "TV and bottle of wine" type of girls!?! We rode 23 really crazy rapids over the course of 6 painful hours which were graded from 1-5 (The scale only actually goes up to a 6!) I CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW SCARED I WAS!! ...The boat capsized 4 times and we ended up hit by our paddles, bumped against rocks, trapped under the boat, and [View Full Entry]

Yes, we really did look like this!

Elephants in the road!
Elephants in the road!
We watched these elephants at about 6am just eating away!- They eat 700kg of food a day, mainly roots so there are ripped up trees everywhere!
Having travelled though Botswana (really friendly people, and the richest country in Africa yet 60% of people have HIV/AIDS) we're now in Zambia (hot hot hot!!). Last night we went clubbing in an outdoor bar which was really great and kinda surreal and the drinks we're cheeeeap!! We road tripped 2000km through South Africa and Botwana (avoiding the sausage fruit falling from the trees!) in a 37 degree heat listening to loud music and stopping for animal pics every so often!! - It was really good fun. There are 8 people on our tour and we have a mini bus/safari vehicle [View Full Entry]

We said a fond farewell to our placement school today after two months. It has been a wonderful experience teaching and getting to know the staff and children. Since it is such a small and friendly school we got to know everyone really well and we took in cakes and they also took in cakes and the break was extended by one and a half hours and we had a party!! Any excuse to stop lessons and eat!! I had long talks with the principal about how she built the school up for a daycare centre and now it has 200 [View Full Entry]

Beach in Port Elizabeth, just next to our hotel.
Port Elizabeth is a bigger city about 2 hours from Port Alfred and about 50 years ahead! Our weekend here was brill!! I met a gorgeous South African man (although his parents were Spanish) called Luis who was one of Steven's friends. The four of us spent the weekend together eating and drinking! This place was great cos we could even go out on the beach and in the sea at midnight - so safe compared to Cape Town. After that we went to the casino and visited Luis' house which was a lovely house overlooking the sea. - I may [View Full Entry]

Me and emma out at a bar on the seafront
This bar had the best cocktail list ever!-
A short plane ride took me to the beautiful city of Port Elizabeth where I hired a car and road tripped to a little village called Port Alfred to meet Emma for a long weekend. (A lovely teacher friend from York who has moved out here with her South African boyfriend Steven) On the way I saw a wild heard of zebras! Very excited I turned the car round only to find out they were normal black and white cows. bummer! Port Alfred was a beautiful little seaside village where we enjoyed eating/drinking out. It was very strange though cos all [View Full Entry]

Harbourside in Port Alfred
Village township
Big tip

I chose this title not because we ran out of a restaurant without paying but because we have done lots of good eating and been really busy this week! We had a lovely week after saying a sad goodbye to 2 of our housemates, leaving just me and Nicola living with the family. Since then we've cooked, bar-b-qued, and watched lots of films. We were let out of work early twice this week - first time because teachers had marking to do and second time they wanted a meeting. It's great! I think that is one thing to recommend to Leeds [View Full Entry]
