Hello there. Yes, I have been fortuned enough to be hopping to several continents this year, even to my own surprise. (Remember that I had plane phobia until fairly recently). What and I doing on the southern tip of Africa? Well, it all started back in March, with the unpretensious submission of two abstracts with the data from my own clinic on diabetes education/control, for presentation at the annual International Diabetes Federation meeting. Unexpectadely they were both accepted and, of course, I couldn't let the opportunity go by. You know... since I got the "travelling bug" and this was a "business" trip, I just HAD TO venture to yet another curious place. The meeting will be held in Cape Town, South Africa. So, what and I doing in Namibia? Well... The more I read about South ... read more

When the structures of society seek to steal away our common experience, we must intentionally create new structures that defy those separations. After these months of continual conflict with myself, of daily frustrated attempts at seeing the truth of this place which is South Africa, I decided to drastically alter the structure of my life. I arranged to work at a children’s home at the village of Umzinyathi in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province. Why not dive head-first into this thing called reality? Umzinyathi is about an hour’s drive outside the city of Durban. This small Zulu village consists of rolling hills of green traced with dirt roads and dotted with concrete houses. All day long taxis zip up and down the main stretch honking and signaling the code for their destination. One finger for Durban, two ... read more

Good morning, everyone! Well, before I head to breakfast, I will fill you in on another African adventure......the hot air balloon ride! Another "first" for me, and I will admit that, once again, my heart was pounding. But, as Tina and I have decided on this journey, we will "feel the fear and do it anyway!". We signed up for the ride, along with 15 others in our group. There are 2 large balloons and Peter, our pilot, is from Texas originally. He lived in Pasadena, Calif. when he got a job offer in Africa and, in his words: "I haven't worked a day since!". He loves it here. Has been doing this for 12 years. He has room and board at the Lodge, makes $2,000US/month and gets 2 months off each year at which time ... read more

Africa » Morocco November 24th 2006

By my second day in Morocco I’m completely drained. I’ve been hustled, harassed, cursed at in Arabic on three separate occasions, and shown enough Berber rugs to carpet the Sahara. It’s hardly encouraging to hear everyone describe Chefchaouen - a mellow mountain town with a cool blue medina - as very tranquilo. Mention the word Fes and eyebrows begin to raise. That’s where Morocco really begins, where the hard sell can break glass and the guy shaking your hand will probably make off with your underwear. For all the wearisome persistence, there’s a good-natured air to how these guys hustle. Everyone is all smiles, happy to hear I’m from New York and having such a pleasant time in their town. Though I suspect most are looking to get something out of me - a suspicion ... read more

So I'm enjoying my last night of electricity before leaving for the second half of the village stay. We had a very enjoyable retreat but I think we're all excited about seeing our families again. I'm really excited to go back to the ugly turkeys of Dudevi. Man, they're really, really ugly. They have layers and layers of skin hanging off of their faces....euugghh. Anyway, one night in the village, we were sitting outside digesting our nighttime meal--delicious as always--and we were chatting by the lantern light. The moon wasn't out so it was pretty dark. Woesta was telling me that it was a taboo not to whistle at night, because it disturbs the spirits, and attracts dwafs. I thought she said giraffes so I got really excited, but she was like, "No, dwafs, you don't ... read more

That Moses dude sure got around. Not only did he go up Mount Nebo and see the Promised Land, he also parted the Red Sea, and also got the 10 Commandments at the top of Mount Sinai. 19 to 21 Nov - Took the ferry from Aqaba, Jordan to Nuweiba, Sinai. Final destination was the Red Sea resort of Dahab accompanied by an armed police escort. Had a very relaxing time walking around the town, eating fabulous seafood, and snorkelling at the Blue Hole which is a famous diving spot. However it's only for expert divers. There are lots of memorials of people who have perished here. During our visit we were shocked to learn that a high-tech diver had drowned in the Blue Hole the previous day. The amazing aspect was the seemingly neverending coral ... read more

Game Drive Set out early this morning into Chobe National Park. Were only inside the park boundary for a matter of minutes and had spotted a herd of elephant walking along the ridgeline. Impala, puku, turtle, warthog, hippo, banded mongoose, and crocodile were also spotted on the way, as well as a variety of birds. River Cruise At 1530 we loaded up with other guests at the hotel on the river cruise boat, and spent about two and a half hours looking at the animals close to the river banks. Initially, it was just large animals. As we went further upstream, a greater range of smaller animals were also spotted.... read more

Hi everyone, I think this is the part many of the young people have been waiting to see! And it was magical!!!!! I'll keep the note short for now as it is getting late and I am tired. I will add more detail tomorrow when I send Part 4 of Kenya, which included a special visit to a village in Masai Mara and my hot air balloon ride. What an eye-opener and what an adventure! So, we arrived in Masai Mara, and booked into the Keekorok Lodge where we stayed for 2 nights. It was a long drive and there were challenges when we arrived at the Lodge. I will say that Carl, our senior Tour Guide, is superb! He handled things very well and very professionally (the Lodge had double-booked and many of our people ... read more

We were luckily enough to muster together a group of 5 of us to hire a car and see what we could in Namibia as the public transport stystem here is almost non existent. We got a Nissan Almera. Probably not the best car for 5 adults, but it was the only affordable one, so it had to do. We started off at Etosha NP. The park was big, but it was good having our own car as we could explore it at our own free will. We stayed in campsites inside the park, which were basic, but had all that we needed. The campsites also had a waterhole out the back, which they light up over night. These were great as you get to see a variety of animals come down for a drink once ... read more
