As a rule of thumb, it’s worth noting that departure times for Moroccan buses should be appended with an -ish. I almost miss the bus to Fes when I take a bathroom break at the station, only to hear the driver gunning the engine, a good eight minutes before we’re supposed to leave. There’s plenty of commotion as me and 18 kilos worth of backpack go bobbing across the parking lot. The driver looks at the time, laughs softly and shrugs. “My friend, what can you do?” his face suggests. There are a few sympathetic nods from the women in the front seats. I take a spot toward the middle of the bus - far enough from the back to avoid the exhaust fumes that leave a vicious plume of smoke behind us. It’s a ... read more

LISten, bLISsed in: it just so happens to be that lis, the name i have been forever called, is the suffix contained within the latin names for nearly every species of lepidoptera in the genus evergestis. evergestis lunulalis, evergestis dimorphalis, and of course, evergestis AFRICALIS: a rare species of butterfly discovered in guenee in 1854. how appropriate, then, that in this metamorphic time of travel through the continent where life was first birthed and butterflies first breathed and rymths first beat, that i should adorn the spirit of this experience with the name: africalis. it is me. this is the beginning of the magicmaking mermaidwhispering moroccanmystering and ancienthistorings. so, weLCOme (!!) to the journal of the journeys, where the stories will be shared with edible re-tellings to satiate the hunger for worldly wonders... i fly from ... read more

This is one of our kids favorite Dr. Seuss Books... Life is full of adventure and roads that we choose to travel down from day to day. We wake up each morning and make choices using our heads and our hearts as to which direction our feet will then travel. Living in Tanzania seems to be a new adventure each and every morning. Wondering what lies ahead in store for you in the upcoming hours. As I was reading this classic children's book to little Gracie this morning, I began to think about all the choices that we face in life that effect our final destination. Each day is a new day and each day has a story of it's own as to where life takes you in your adventures. You make right turns and wrong ... read more

Zambian Lobster Knees My knees are the delightful pinkish-red of a well cooked lobster. Today four of us from the group went rafting with a group of five from another Kumuka trip that has also just ended here in Victoria Falls. We went with a Zambian company who do an 'all day' raft down 25 rapids over 28 km. In reality, they only do 23, because they enter downstream from the first rapid, and just pick up the tail of it, and they walk one rapid that is classed as Grade 6, and would not be suitable for inexperienced rafters. The rafting was better than every commercial rafting I have done in Australia and New Zealand. It was not just head and shoulders above rafting the Coca in Ecuador. What would have been called a rapid ... read more

Today we have moved into our flat! As a tribute to the National Baha'i Centre of South Africa, here are some parting photos from our stay there. I was surprinsingly emotional this morning as I stood taking pictures of the sunrise from atop the cliff. Lake Manyara, who would have thought? Today is not only my 35th birthday, but also the one year anniversary of the beginning of the end of my house on Burris street - and my life as I knew it. It was one year ago today that I was supposed to go downtown to meet some friends for a birthday drink and had to cancel because my kitchen was completely flooded. I had no idea what was in store for me at the time, but if you had told me then that this flood would lead to a fire that would leave me homeless, which would lead to a robbery, which would lead me to being posessionless, which ... read more

All of a sudden there was a rustling in the trees just twenty metres away. We looked at each other and grinned like mad. We could hardly believe that we were about to enter the world of the mountain gorillas. There are only about 720 mountain gorillas left in the world, making it one of the most endangered species on the planet. There are no mountain gorillas in captivity (those in zoos are generally lowland gorillas) and so the only chance of seeing one is by hiking in the rainforests of Uganda, Rwanda or Congo. We chose Parc National Des Volcans in Rwanda for such an experience. After travelling from Kampala to Kisoro, then crossing the border into Rwanda, we spent the night at a guesthouse in Kinigi. The following morning we joined about 50 other ... read more

Today’s the big day. I was up at 6am for the morning game drive, while Fi decided to have a lie-in. We went to a different part of the Mara this morning, south along the Mara river towards the Serena. We saw a large herd of elephant, a big pride of Spotted Hyena, a very large crocodile and the paradise pride loafing around on some rocks. I got back to find Fi was up and ready for breakfast. We were both getting pretty nervous by now, in fact, I think that if there weren’t armed guards surrounding the camp, she might have been tempted to make a break for it. We went to meet the priest, Farther Francis Thumbi. He was brilliant, and said that we could have whatever type of ceremony we wanted. We said ... read more

I'm so tired... you know when you feel just really heavy and anything and everything makes you laugh uncontrollably? ha haha. It was tough interviewing enumerators yesterday. I napped from 4pm-6:30pm that afternoon... then slept from 11pm to 10:30am this morning. I still feel in a daze. Probably too much sleep. Luckily we invented a filter system and found some very good Tanzanian coffee. mmm. Caffeine. We are interviewing more people today. Maybe on Monday too. But tomorrow I think we'll chill out. Maybe go to the beach. I want to go to the market later today or tomorrow for some papaya and pineapple. mmmmmmm. I think I should travel the world and write about food. ... read more
