Hello!

This is my travelblog of my experience in Ghana, West Africa! I don't know how often I'll have access to the internet--if I have it at all--so don't count on there being a day to day account of my journeys. Besides, even if I did have internet access everyday, I wouldn't waste it sending messages to you folks!

I hope you enjoy, and that you're having a wonderful time in the frigid weather of Canada.

peace.

Prince ended up winning Mentor II, with Joe coming in second place. I was quite disappointed, but that didn't stop me from enjoying my birthday. For my birthday, I got some awesome chocolate spread that we had at Fr. Paul's. It was really quite exciting. We visited our friend Kofi who was really surprised that we actually found his place, because he really didn't think we could. We hung out and listened to some gospel radio, his favourite. Then we went off to the arts centre to spend the evening with some of our friends there. On our way there--wow I'm really getting distracted by this kid playing Need for Speed on the computer beside me--we passed by Gina's Mini Mart. We pass by Gina's everyday and she's a very sweet lady. We told her it ... read more

Today's my birthday! Yahoooooooooo! But it's about 12:03 am and I need to sleep soon, so I'll update you all on my birthday adventures in the next message. So the first week of work placements was alright. My first day at Theatre for a Change, I was a bit intimidated because I didn't really feel like I was qualified enough to be doing the job they gave me which is: Monitoring Officer in Somanya. I have to go to the town of Somanya, which is a bit over an hour away, and watch/participate in workshops that are put on in different schools by the facilitators who are teachers that are trained to put on these workshops. Then, I have to give them feedback and help them improve their work. I'm started to get the hang of ... read more

We moved into the new place, and it's really great because there is a really cute puppy named Max. I forgot to write about the yevu Steve that we met in Cape Coast. We tried to figure out why he was in Ghana, and all we could figure out that he was here for a "business internship" and he's going to Sierra Leone in a few weeks. He was supposed to be going to the castle the same day we did, because he "knew someone" who could get him a free tour. We saw him the evening after we went to the castle and he said that he didn't go. So we asked what he did and he said, "Oh I just hung around....went the to market...?" Our theory is that he's with the CIA. Then ... read more

Now I'm back in Accra, travel time is finished, and my work placement starts on Monday. The rest of travel time was alright, I got to bake donuts. We found a place to stay, and it's cheap, and it's in Osu, which is the rich tourist part of town, so it makes it even more of a deal. Proposals = 44. Hm, I can't remember what I wrote in the last entry. I met two other yevus and we hung out for the night. The retreat in Kumasi was a nice rest. The other girls are going up to Tamale, and I won't see them for a whole month! My goodness. Yup...not in the mood to write right now, but if anyone would like to send me an email anytime soon, that would be great, because ... read more

Elisha and I decided not to go to Aflao to pick up packages with Sarah and Amy. We decided to ride on the seat of our pants, go where the wind takes us, and it hasn't taken us very far. We're still in Accra, struggling with the Ghana Telecom payphones. Oh guess what I lost a shirt, which brings me down to two shirts. It kind of sucks because it was my church/"nice" shirt. So now I just have dirty tank tops with stains from I don't know where. I got my first proposal in Accra today. Now I'm at 43. In Accra, all the obrunis look much cleaner and nicer than us, we all just look really dirty and stinky. Here are some pictures from Elisha: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/AKAjamal/DSCN5676.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/AKAjamal/DSCN5796.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/AKAjamal/DSCN5662.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/AKAjamal/DSCN5863.jpg ... read more

Operation Hand in Hand was a really awesome place. One of the women that started it, Ineke, has quite the list of achievements, including starting health insurance in Ghana. Her husband, Bob, is a retired banker/director/actor from Chicago and he took us around the place. I really hope we get to go back. We left for Kumasi on New Years Eve. When we got there we asked around if there was anything happening that night, but nobody really knew of anything. So we decided that we would go to the last hostel we stayed at to look for Katrina's unfortunately lost toiletry items. We were out of luck, but we did meet two guys named Kwaku and Yaw. We sat in the lobby of the hostel and watched the Ghanaian version of American Idol for a ... read more

I had to switch computers because the internet kept switching on and off and things were screwing up. So back to my story....they said that Veronica wouldn't be home until later because she was out with her boyfriend, and that she must've forgotten about it because her biggest weakness is her memory...? So we left in search for banku again, and found TZ which was good too. The next morning we said that we'd stop by to say goodbye, and as we walked by her house there was a lot of screaming and yelling and things being thrown and the door was kind of shaking so we just kept walking. We got to the bus station and waited for our bus, which was late as always. We met this guy named Josh from the Netherlands and ... read more
