Hey folks This is going to be a very brief entry, as I want it to just be visual. I am just going to attach a whole bunch of pictures, in hopes of conveying a small part of the beauty of this county. I have resized all the photos to be smaller so that they upload more quickly, but if you would like a full sized (3 megapixel) copy of a picture, email me at baalwolf@gmail.com and tell me the photo title(s). Thank you all for your comments and messages. I have been informed that "Petite Chirurgie" means "small surgery", which the Anderson clinic does not do. Feel free to pass on the link to this blog to whomever you like, as the reason that I am writing it is to inform as many people as ... read more

KabeashaI've now got my first bush trip under my belt and i can finally say ive experienced the Congo roads. Myself Murrey and Mubanga tarveled up to Kabiasha, a small village 230 km north of Lubumbashi. we were traveling up there to deliver medical supplies for the local clinic and also 2 sowing machines for the women form the church. We set off at 6.30 in the morning so that hopefully we could make it up in one straight drive and allowing for maybe a couple of delays. the first 100 km were very straight and also level so that was no problem so we flew through them. but then the fun began. some of the roads were roughly 70-100 meters wide but had around 5 routes in all directions and it was just a huge ... read more

The Candyman is this wonderful, old Malawian man. He comes into Mayoka every night. He sets up his chair and little bench with chocolate and candy and snacks which he then sells to the people hanging out in the bar. What makes this man such an icon to me is not that he sells candy but his look. The picture I took of him was in his “Sunday go to church clothes” (my line). But the first few days he was dressed all in purple, purple socks, purple shorts, purple shirt. Best of all is the hat. He has this purple, pimp daddy hat. It really gives him a pimp/fly guy look or maybe the crows Heckle and Jeckle. We couldn’t tell. It was a classic look. My trip through Malawi was short and relaxing. I ... read more

Ngorogoro  Africa » Tanzania » Ngorogoro Crater By TamsinJune 15th 2007Tamsin Sebba Friday 15th Amazing morning - 6.30 breakfast (with another hot chocolate) and then drove down into the Crater. The first thing that we saw was nine lionesses and one lion. They looked like they were stalking a warthog, but it noticed & ran off. Inside the Crater is a big lake, with a few flamingos, zebra, wildebeest and Thompson gazelle milling about. It is really pretty with the mountains surrounding it. We spotted two black rhino in the distance (but they were sat down), two cheetahs (close up) and lots of hippo sitting in the sun. There was so much to see, includin... read more

We had the alarm set for the crack of dawn to allow for enough time to pack, eat breakfast and catch an 8:15 a.m., 4-hour train to Fez. Paying the inflated price of $5 USD per first class ticket, we were relieved to find that our train car was only half full. Able to relax on the train for the first time, I used the next hours to catch up on note taking and story writing. I knew the day was a good one when our train pulled into the station and there was a driver from our hotel awaiting our arrival, with an air-conditioned minivan. Unable to drive into the Medina where our room was located, we were conveniently greeted by a woman from the riad who accompanied us to the gigantic courtyard home. Having ... read more

With the plans for the summer starting, we wanted to have a little bit of time with Joshua before the campaign started. As most mom’s and dad’s, we are thrilled to have Joshua home, under the same roof as us. “Uncle Sam” basically paid for Joshua’s trip this year and for that we are thankful. We wanted to have some time alone with him and do something cool that was different. The campaign is three weeks long and pretty much consumes the entire day, 6 days of the week. We didn't really want to go to another park ... plus this is in High season, so harder to find one that is reasonably priced. Brent Richardson told us about this Mountain climb. Suppose to be just a couple days trip, cheaper if we drive our own ... read more

I went for my first horse-ride this afternoon! Bashiir, one of the guards at the College very kindly came to teach me the basics - how to fit the saddle, how to tie the rope around the horse’s head to act as a bridle, how to get the horse to move faster (“Chi”) and stop (Shhhh!) and how to tie the rope to his leg at the end of the ride. I had such a great time. I have, after consultation with some Ethiopian colleagues, named the red horse “Daamaa”. I wanted to call the white horse “Bakakaa” which means Lightening as every time I try to stroke him he moves away very quickly - but my colleagues laughed and said it was not a good name for a horse, so instead he is named “Daallee”. ... read more

Hello! So, things are definitley cooling off here! They tell me that June and July are the coldest months and I hope they are right because this is about as cold as I can take it without heat! It went down to the upper 40's at night and 50's during the day which felt really cold. Maybe I was in California for too long? I refuse to take a cold shower anymore so my hot shower in a bag is used quite often ;) (In case you don't know what a "hot shower in a bag" is...it's a contraption that some brilliant person thought of for people suffering from cold showers. It's a plastic bag that you can put water in and lay it out in the sun all day or for the inpatient ones, ... read more

Borders After crossing lots of borders, we thought we had it sussed, until Zimbabwe! Under the section "occupation" you can write pretty much anything...astronaut, engineer, prostitute maybe...but whatever you do, don't put information officer. Duh! Rach got grilled at the border by two officials (so you come to seek information?) who suspected she was a journalist - the BBC are banned from Harare. After much explaining, Rach had to fill in a special form declaring she wouldn't collect any information on the political situation in Zim and stating she needed to report to immigration at Vic Falls (was never asked for it again and I'm now officially a teacher!). Harare seemed a very quiet city. We had to wait two days to get any cash, as the exchange rate at the bureaus was 250 to 1 ... read more
