My husband, Anthony, have returned from living in Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa. We moved there in October of 2006, and returned home in January of 2009. I miss it terribly! We are from Tennessee and have one son, Joshua. We were missionaries in Chimala, Tanzania from 1992 - 1995 and fell in love with the country as a whole. We came home, got some additional schooling, allowed Joshua to do all the things teenagers should do, graduate high school, and moved back to Africa. Have come home, Joshua is married. This journal is our ongoing story.
After getting out of that water, the next hour or so felt so warm! As we got into the next campsite, we changed into dry clothes, put up our tent, hung the food, and all of a sudden on my way to the pit toilet I was stopped in my tracks as there were two mule deer standing within 10 yards of me. One on each side of the path. They looked at me as if I was in their way, and slowly sauntered off. They didn't even look startled. Me, I hurried just a little faster to my destination, more than startled. And then we had another new addition to camp, our new backpacking member, Krista. She is 17 and had been given the gift of 3 days 2 nights backpacking by her mother. When

Someone is there during the entire tourist season. No electricity, no indoor toilets, but check out the view! The walk to our next camp included a couple of suspension bridges (which I would have LOVED to have had on Day 4, you will see later why), a beautiful water fall, and at least one bear caution sign. At the waterfall we stopped to not only take pictures but to eat lunch. He had prepared this cream cheese mixture that we just LOVED. Cream cheese, sun dried tomatoes in olive oil and some basil. YUM! Today wasn’t as long a walk as the day hike in, but there sure seemed to be

It sets just off the road in West Glacier and surrounded by forest and managed by Josh. Josh will have you in love with Montana within the hour while at the same time make you feel like part of his family. No phones - sweet! After a great?? night sleep accompanied by a bedtime book provided by Josh on the subject of bear attacks (thanks for the nightmares! Josh) - we were ready to get moving. Our first stop before heading into the backwoods was a 2 mile hike up to Avalanche Lake and back. Took us 4 hours! I took a few pictures along the way. (hehe) The air is so clear

After many searches for an adventure that we had never had before we decided on a 6 day backpacking trip to upstate Montana. BRRRR! In June! We are anticipating snow still being on the ground while we are there! We will be flying to Kalispell, Montana - greatful for all those Tanzania to America frequent flyer miles - our round trip tickets only cost us $10 each! We are going with Glacier Guides Service as our guide. I have never been to Montana ... did you know it borders Canada? HA. It's way up there. Now, the preparation phase has given us new insight into the backpacking world. There are very specific rules about the placement of your gear in

Friday we went early to get our packet, bib placard, free T-shirt, people were everywhere. I started getting butterflies. We got checked in and shortly afterward, George and Tammy arrived. We headed to dinner for a carb load dinner. Tammy ran with her friends last year so she filled us in on what we could expect. None of us really slept as well as we hoped, too excited. Afraid we would sleep through the alarm I guess. I think I saw every hour on the clock. We had gotten some bagels, peanut butter, bananas, and juice the night before just in case the breakfast wasn't out when we

This time last year Anthony and I started running for better health. It's that time in our lives when things aren't where they used to be, and the midlife spread has nothing to do with peanut butter. Well, if truth be told it probably actually does, we go through it almost as fast as our daily fiber. But I don't have to explain if you are over 45, you know what I mean. A dear friend of mine, Tammy Fowler, has been an incredible incourager. She started running a couple of years ago too, and this

We found ourselves daily saying, "This reminds us of Africa!" The truth is, 3rd world countries have so many things in common. Lack of infrastructure, poverty, illiteracy, illnesses, and people who are in need are the commonality. This year we joined Anthony's cousin Kelly Webb, his wife Terri, and several others to go to San Blas. All in all there I think there were over 50 of us. We left Nashville July 1st, stayed the night with Kelly and Terri in Pulaski, and early Saturday morning boarded the church van at Fairview Church of Christ with 10 others and drove to the Atlanta airport where we met three more. One of

First, my apologies for misspelling Eilean Donan, and then the Explorer Pass was actually like this: you get to go 3 days within 5 to any of the 78 places for the first price I mentioned, and then the 2nd option was 7 days within a 14 day span for the second price. The other previous blogs have been basically only about what we have seen and done from the perspective of being a tourist. Now let me tell you a bit about behind the scenes. While we were in Tanzania it was so nice to be able to have visitors from home. You always got the scoop of how things were going in the states,

(Thus one of the purposes of a travel blog so others can get information on where they may be traveling. Part of the time our sightseeing has been with Adam, and the other we ventured on our own. We are always interested in what others find interesting and where the better places to go are so this is my opinions and thoughts on what we have seen. We jammed a lot in a little amount of time, but you could spend as little or as much time in each place as your time allows. FIRST - GET A TOMTOM! Any GPS really, but we

It was a gorgeous day, the sunbathing was out in force. They are thinking heatwave as there were mini skirts, shirtless guys, and people laying on just about every piece of grass they could find. I am going to try to get some of the pictures posted for highlights. The research hasn't been done yet, so don't think to badly of me if I get some of the details wrong. Edinburgh is the most massively enforced Castle we've seen ... oh wait - I've only seen two .. one was in ruins and didn't even have a door and the other one was on a hill so far away
