Hotel room, food and gas $400; registration fee, Gu packs, headband $120, crossing the finish line after 13.1 LONG miles with a friend at your side ... priceless. Friday we went early to get our packet, bib placard, free T-shirt, people were everywhere. I started getting butterflies. We got checked in and shortly afterward, George and Tammy arrived. We headed to dinner for a carb load dinner. Tammy ran with her friends last year so she filled us in on what we could expect. None of us really slept as well as we hoped, too excited. Afraid we would sleep through the alarm I guess. I think I saw every hour on the clock. We had gotten some bagels, peanut butter, bananas, and juice the night before just in case the breakfast wasn't out when we ... read more
I have heard the phrase, "going the last mile", or "the last mile of the way", or even people talking about meeting a 'milestone' in their lives, but only the last few months has those taken on a new meaning. This time last year Anthony and I started running for better health. It's that time in our lives when things aren't where they used to be, and the midlife spread has nothing to do with peanut butter. Well, if truth be told it probably actually does, we go through it almost as fast as our daily fiber. But I don't have to explain if you are over 45, you know what I mean. A dear friend of mine, Tammy Fowler, has been an incredible incourager. She started running a couple of years ago too, and this ... read more
This years mission trip took us south of the US instead of East. We were in uncharted territory, but the purpose was still the same. We found ourselves daily saying, "This reminds us of Africa!" The truth is, 3rd world countries have so many things in common. Lack of infrastructure, poverty, illiteracy, illnesses, and people who are in need are the commonality. This year we joined Anthony's cousin Kelly Webb, his wife Terri, and several others to go to San Blas. All in all there I think there were over 50 of us. We left Nashville July 1st, stayed the night with Kelly and Terri in Pulaski, and early Saturday morning boarded the church van at Fairview Church of Christ with 10 others and drove to the Atlanta airport where we met three more. One of ... read more
Ok, before I get into the entry for today let me make a couple of corrections from the last blog. First, my apologies for misspelling Eilean Donan, and then the Explorer Pass was actually like this: you get to go 3 days within 5 to any of the 78 places for the first price I mentioned, and then the 2nd option was 7 days within a 14 day span for the second price. The other previous blogs have been basically only about what we have seen and done from the perspective of being a tourist. Now let me tell you a bit about behind the scenes. While we were in Tanzania it was so nice to be able to have visitors from home. You always got the scoop of how things were going in the states, ... read more
We have spent nearly a week in Scotland and while things are fresh on my mind I wanted to write it down for anyone who might be traveling to the same areas. (Thus one of the purposes of a travel blog so others can get information on where they may be traveling. Part of the time our sightseeing has been with Adam, and the other we ventured on our own. We are always interested in what others find interesting and where the better places to go are so this is my opinions and thoughts on what we have seen. We jammed a lot in a little amount of time, but you could spend as little or as much time in each place as your time allows. FIRST - GET A TOMTOM! Any GPS really, but we ... read more
Today we had a free day and spent the entire day sightseeing in Edinburgh, the Castle, the Cathedrals, then out to Linlithgow Palace, and then Stirling Castle. It was a gorgeous day, the sunbathing was out in force. They are thinking heatwave as there were mini skirts, shirtless guys, and people laying on just about every piece of grass they could find. I am going to try to get some of the pictures posted for highlights. The research hasn't been done yet, so don't think to badly of me if I get some of the details wrong. Edinburgh is the most massively enforced Castle we've seen ... oh wait - I've only seen two .. one was in ruins and didn't even have a door and the other one was on a hill so far away ... read more
Ok sorry everyone for the quick exit last entry. I was only about 3/4ths of the way through what I wanted to say when the fire alarm went off. At 11:30pm I might add! So, we headed outside, for 15 - 30 mins and when we were allowed back in I had very few minutes left on my internet pass so I did what I could quickly to get the entry out with a few pictures. There are several things that are very different here from home. One of the first things you notice is that driving is on the left side of the road and there are no big cars at all. Anthony's truck would have nowhere to park! Of course with gas being over $7 a GALLON none of us could afford to drive ... read more
The Words that according to the Movie Braveheart William Wallace yelled before they decided to take on battle. Of course none of us were there, but the battle certainly took place, and William Wallace was very real. But I am getting ahead of myself. We got up last Saturday morning at 3:34 am! Now, those of you who know me .... that is AMAZAZAZING .... we went to Waffle House for breakfast, picked up Joshua, got to the airport, and soon boarded. ONLY to have to go to Philadelphia for our layover of nearly 9 hours. BUT while we were there we were able to catch the train and go into town. I saw for the first time the Liberty Bell. I have to admit hearing about it and actually seeing it in person is very ... read more
Heads Up - We are on the move! But alas only for a short trip. The travel bug just won't leave us alone. When we placed our membership at Walnut Street Church of Christ it was soon after that the Mission committee approached us to ask if we would do some traveling on their behalf. Of course we were honored, and thrilled to be a part of overseas mission work. It's in the blood, not much you can do about it. So, for now, please keep our travel in your prayers as we prepare to leave this coming Saturday morning for Cumbernauld, Scotland. We are hopeful to be in worship with the Christians there on Sunday morning and share a add a dish meal with them in the afternoon. MMMM? I wonder if they speak Swahili? ... read more
Anthony & Shasta Brown The beginning of 2009 saw us leaving Tanzania and returning home to Tennessee to begin our life here once again. January 19th we landed in Nashville after another tour in TZ of over 2 years. We are happy for our time there and continue to pray for the work, the brethren, and the missionaries still there. For the first couple of months we thought we might be going to India. But that road did not lead anywhere due to India's tightening of visa approval. Brother Jim Waldron had kindly asked us to go to the northeast section and visit a work there to see if we might want to relocate there. But it simply was not meant to be. From there we set about to build in Hickman County once again. ... read more
