My last night and the way home Europe » United Kingdom » England » Essex » Colchester By Tamsin June 30th 2007 Tamsin Sebba Friday 29th Arrived in Nairobi at 10.30am, and got a taxi to Ken’s backpackers, where we were sure he wouldn’t be as last we saw he was in jail. However, he greeted us with a mighty hug, not remembering where he knew us from, and tales that someone had tried to assassinate him whilst he was at the coast, and about how he was going back to England to start a new business i.e. he’

Following 5 matatu (minibus), a ferry and a bus up the coast, we arrived in Watamu. We’re staying in a basic hostel and I’m sharing with Lucy, so finally she doesn’t have be the gooseberry! We went for a wander to the beach and got bargaining for a fishing trip (for them) and snorkelling for all. Food at the hostel took forever to come (like Malawi, Dad, but worse), and it was the wrong order when it did finally arrive. We saw him run out to buy an onion to make my order, which wasn’t worth eating in the end. Lots of mosquitos about, so hid under Claudie & Dan’s net to

Saturday 16th 6am up for a 7am departure - we crossed over the Kenyan border and a long journey to Nairobi. I used Andrea’s room to shower & repack my bag before getting the overnight bus to Mombassa. On the nightbus I had all the back seats to myself, and lay out to sleep, although the bumpy roads meant that I flew into the air on several occasions. At midnight we stopped, and unfortunately more people got on so I lost my bed. Sunday 17th We arrived at Mombassa at 3.30am. I thought we were arriving at 6am, so I got in a taxi for an hour drive to Diani Beach. Since only the night porter was there when I arrived, I slept on the sofa until 8am, when I

The first thing that we saw was nine lionesses and one lion. They looked like they were stalking a warthog, but it noticed & ran off. Inside the Crater is a big lake, with a few flamingos, zebra, wildebeest and Thompson gazelle milling about. It is really pretty with the mountains surrounding it. We spotted two black rhino in the distance (but they were sat down), two cheetahs (close up) and lots of hippo sitting in the sun. There was so much to see, inc

Drove past the Nogorogoro Crater and drove along the edge, before continuing for another three hours to the Serengeti. I said to our guide that I wanted to see an adult male lion, and 10 mins later we saw one! Then Sean requested a leopard and in the next hour we came across one in a tree. It was too good to be true! We also saw lots of zebra and wildebeest migrating. Thurs 14th Up at 6.30 for the game drive - we saw another leopard and even more wildebeest migrating. We drove to a toilet stop, but as we got out, we were

I saw more of the hussel and bustle of town as we drove through and I’m glad we didn’t stay there. As I went through immigration (even though I was staying in Tanzania) I asked a girl behind me if she was on a tour and she was- The Nomad tour that I was joining! Perfect. I sat with her (Sarah) as we went on the ferry over to Dar Es Salaam on the main land. I then met the rest of my truck group (most had been on the truck for 3 or more weeks from Victoria falls). We then went on another car ferry over to a camp

They took us right into the heart of the Old Town and we had lunch in a bustling cafe. There weren't many women around as it was friday. Zanzibar is about 95% muslim. Havng spent about an hour in the town downloading Tamsin's photos onto a CD and me buying a basket we went for a spice tour. It was very homely like in someone's backyard, but they covered all the main spices and the young guy who showed us round made some amazing plaited jewellery and bags for us. H ealso climbed a very tall coconut

The road for the last couple of hours was very dusty and bumpy as there were lots of large trucks. Nakuru National park is very wooded with flat plain down to the lake. It was rainy when we first arrived and our first glimpse of the flamingo in all their thousands (1.25 million on a good day apparently) were seen in the rain. We added buffalo and rhino to our list too. You can't get too close to the flamingo because they just drift off. It is an amazng sight. I wasn't prepared for the noise and smell. Sort of constant trilling. As we were losing light we drove up

We had been tempted by the hot air balloon flights but it was very expensive, rather cold and in the end we very glad we stayed on the ground. We started off by seeing elephant and all sorts of gazelle impala topi etc. Our first lions were sprawled out by the side of the road obviously having had a good meal last night or that morning. As they finally decided to amble off across the road the scavengers who had been waiting at a distance moved in . Jackal and vultures first, followed by the hyena who won the day for the bones as Tamsin's photo shows!! We had been watching
