Hello everyone! I hope that everyone is great and had a wonderful week. Alan and I did a lot of work this week... and got pretty sick as well (not because of the work, though). We got back into town on Wednesday and quickly made up for the two days that we missed. I really started getting into the research for my dissertation for university that is on the rural Kenyan Maasai pregnancy practices and beliefs... I started doing a lot of interviews and it was so interesting and so much fun. The women here are amazing... especially after you realize all the work they do while they are pregnant and still even while they are delivering children. They are remarkable. One of the woman said to me, "Now you know so much and you ... read more

We say goodbye to Luxor and the Upper Nile region We had a great visit to Luxor. We saw and learned many things that will keep us occupied for a long time after this trip is over. The best thing - we got to sleep in this morning! We had breakfast and were picked up at 9:30 for the flight back to Cairo which has become our second home in Egypt after initially arriving there, returning from Alexandria by train and now returning from Luxor by plane...home sweet home. The Luxor airport is very nice, an international airport as it is only a 4 hour flight from the UK and many Europeans vacation in Luxor to escape cold winters. As we took off it was very evident that the Nile, the longest river in the ... read more

This is the big one!!! Safariiiiii!!! So for our safari we went to Ngorongoro Crater, which is a huuuge conservation area. It is the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera (formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption). It is sooo big, it's like 160 square miles... and 2,000 feet deep! It was soooo amazing.. the pictures don't even show it, but nevertheless there will be several on this entry! There were zebras EVERYWHERE and tons of wildebeests... lots of gazelles and hippos too, but it is hard to spot a lion, hyena, or rhino. There are a good amount of buffaloes too, and I wanted to get some pictures of them for Mom, but the buffaloes here look nothing like the ones you see in America, or the pictures! They look more like ... read more

As you will have gathered from Elle's blog, we are indeed back in Sydney. In fact, in the 2 weeks we have been back we have volunteered in our church's annual conference, and I have been to Dubbo for work and back. It just keeps getting more exciting eh? But South Africa... the final stop on our whirlwind trip. It was deja-vu as we exited into Jo'burg for the second time in a week. Another friendly face to meet us, this time a little more familiar. It was Albertus, who organised the Hillsong United tour of South Africa last year. During a casual chat on the tour, he mentioned that he used to organise safaris, and that if I was ever planning to do a safari, I should do one in South Africa and call ... read more

Haha, so i know the title of this journal is funny but, it is the name of the song that is playing right now and it is like one of my favorite ugandan songs right now. They play it allllll the time, so i guess its good that i like it. lol. the next song after that was toy soldier by eminem. which, brings me to how i spent my night last night. When i returned home from kampala to my family's house, the power was out and it stayed out until like 1030ish so, we just talked and had dinner, etc with candles and flashlights. I am getting quite used to not having power, and i am slowly overcoming my slight fear of the dark, especially because when it is dark here it is d-a-r-k ... read more

Hello and Happy early Canada Day to everyone back home We are currently in Kampala working with the Ugandan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA). We are here to the end of the week and will make a full update then. I have not updated recently and since our trip is more than half done I thought I would share some of the things we have learned and some words of wisdom (or what I try to pass off as wisdom). - warthogs like bannana peels - monkeys are far less funny when it looks like they want to get into your tent - do not walk around Ugandan National Parks after dark; you will get eaten (we did not test this theory but I was willing to go with it on faith) ... read more

Luxor and the Valley of the Kings (NOTE: The blog from the 27th has been updated with all the photos including our camel ride and photos taken inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. Still no progress on the return of posting streaming video, will continue working on that.) We got up early and met Hamby in the lobby of our hotel to head for the airport for our 7:30am flight to Luxor. As usual, Ahmet did a great job driving although there wasn't much traffic at 5:30 in the morning, even in Cairo. We had arranged for a box breakfast from the hotel and they delivered it to the lobby along with cups of coffee for us...they were great. We were met at the airport by the Isram Luxor transfer man, Moumad who helped us ... read more

I have been a little sidetracked the past few days... I have been in a village called KAPOETA about 120 km to the East of TORIT. It was a really great experience, and I got to know some of my colleagues better, made some new friends, and enjoyed my time away from the team site. We left for KAPOETA an hour and a half late, and this is fairly typical as punctuality is not a widely-respected quality in Sudan, or much of Africa for that matter. In fact, a simple, often-used expression for why things just aren’t working right is “TIA.... this is Africa.” I think that came from the Sean Connery/Michael Caine movie “The Man Who Would be King” Anyhow... I digress. During our time in KAPOETA, we made a day trip to the ... read more

The blue-green water of the Nile rushes past me and the rock approaches at a frightening speed. I flail my arms, trying to gain control of my kayak and wish that I hadn’t lost my paddle, all the while thumping on the side of my kayak to indicate to the guide that I need help. All of a sudden a whirlpool opens up less than a foot from the right side of my kayak and I get pulled in. I start spinning, losing sight of the rock that I am trying desperately to avoid. And to add to all that, I’m upside down, having been power-flipped by the rapids, I’m running out of breath, and my head is heading straight for the rock which is sticking a foot out of the bed of the river. Right ... read more
