It’s raining in England, nay, it’s pouring and I’m sure somewhere an old man is snoring. So what’s a girl to do? Only one thing for it, head south for some sun. Well, the trip was planned way before God unleashed his wrath on the north of England. But hey, it was good timing, a welcome break from the damp summer (Global warming, pah! Anyway, it’s all cosmic rays, not CO2, look it up!). So off to Marrakesh for the weekend, a quick Squeezyjet flight far too early in the morning and we arrived (myself and friend Linda) just after breakfast in the Red city. It’s actually all pink, but they like to call it red, I guess it’s a bit more macho than calling it the pink city. Accommodation was in one of the many ... read more

I came in and out of Uganda three times and will clump it all into this blog. The first time was mentioned in my Lamu entry, which accounted my rafting adventure at the source of the Nile with Chi... which was just awesome and one of the most exciting things I've ever experienced in my life. Part of the fun had to do with the fact that we had a great raft guide, a freelancer named Gram, who made sure we had plenty of outrageous, acrobatic flips. Shortly after that, I went to the DRC to track the mountain gorillas and came back to Uganda and spent almost a week at Lake Bunyoni. Megan and I would have totally stayed there for weeks had it not been for our 7-day transit visa. Lake Bunyoni has ... read more

On Friday morning me and 4 of my fellow volunteers (Ali, Naomi, George and Tom) caught a matatu up to Malindi airport to fly to Lamu. Unfortunately our flight got cancelled and we ended up sitting on a bus for 5 hours! The road to Lamu is very bumpy and pot-holey and about 60 miles away from our destination we had 2 armed guards join us because of the risk of bandits and the fact that we're very close to Somalia! We arrived in Lamu late afternoon and checked into our budget hotel (GBP2.30 a night). We went out to a restaurant called Bush Gardens owned by a guy called Satan! The food was nice enough but it was so slow! We must have waited about an hour and a half for our starters alone! ... read more

Looking at the Fishies in the Deep Blue Sea… After my exam on Saturday morning, Katie and I decided that since it was POURING rain, it was an excellent day to go to the Two Oceans Aquarium. I was very excited about going to the aquarium, since they had a live kelp forest (ok, so I didn’t know much about kelp beforehand, but the website sure sounded excited about it), penguins, and a “predator tank.” Apparently, every other person in Cape Town had the same idea as us, and the aquarium was crowded, especially full of children. The first few exhibits were pretty cool, with themes from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and a touch tank where I got to pet some sea anemones and starfish. The seals were very playful and it was a ... read more

Well, we are now finishing up our time in Uganda. We spent the last week working with Dr. Berna in her private practice and in her work with the USPCA. Among our different activities, we got to travel around Kampala and some surrounding areas helping with average practice type animal activities (deworming, abscesses, vaccines, spays). It is different because most people get home visits, instead of going into the clinic. The most entertaining visit was one dog with a chain stuck on its neck (very vicious dog, it took 2 tries and a Rabies pole and a few towels to sedate it). We managed to get the chain off, but with the muzzle on, the dog was in a permanent snarl, even though it was pretty much asleep. Miraculously, no people were hurt. With the USPCA ... read more

Satiri has been pretty empty for the past couple of weeks since most of its population heads out to the fields each morning. A rainstorm or two finally came, but the last week has been dry and farmers are still complaining about the lack of rain. I biked out into the bush one morning to see my neighbor’s fields. Tidiane’s family has about 15 hectares, mostly of cotton, corn, and peanuts. The cotton is sold each year to the huge monopoly Sofitex for ever more disappointing prices. The corn and peanuts will feed the family in my courtyard for the next year. The fields are dotted with shea trees, the only trees not cut down when land is cleared. This time of year the trees produce lots of round green fruits the size of ping pong ... read more

Getting to know the Moroccan way of life is to know the Medina, which means the old city, usually contained within high walls and a containing a souk, or market. Depending on what you are after, you can find anything from spare car parts, to an eyeglass case, to fruit and vegetables. The souk often has small, uneven, windy streets that you can easily lose yourself in. In Meknes we were escorted through the streets to see butchers displaying various parts of sheep, cow, and camel. Yes, camel. Camel burgers are pretty popular here, and some of the group even tried it out. First, you buy the meat from the butcher, then you take it to the restaurant to be cooked up in pita bread. I didn't try any, of course, but many did, and they ... read more

After last years birthday spent paragliding in Switzerland, this year we were in Africa. We finished our Gorilla tour on the Saturday and spent Sunday relaxing at the hotel. We had booked to fly back to the UK on the Monday evening (my birthday) but during the day we went to see our World Vision Sponsor child Mbithe, who lives about 3 hours out of Nairobi. We have sponsored Mbithe for 12 years since she first entered into the World Vision child sponsorship program at the age of 5. She is in her second last year of secondary school and is the top girl in her class and 3rd overall. We were picked up by World Vision staff and driven out to her village seeing various World Vision projects along the way. We were then taken ... read more
