We left the hotel to head back to TCDC, but we first went out of our way to go to Olduvai Gorge, often referred to as "the cradle of mankind", where they have found many prehistoric remains. It is the home of primitive hominid forms before modern humans, and also the first discovered species of homo habilis. While we were there, there was some excavating going on, a professor from Spain and one from the states, so maybe something else will turn up! Near the gorge are the "shifting sands", basically a large sand dune which has been said to completely move over time. They have markers of where the sand was at five years ago, ten years ago, etc. So then we all just stood on top of it! We're going to Dar es ... read more

For those of you that didn’t know I’ve left life in London and taken a new job as the International Development Director for a small NGO, Children’s Care and Protection Rwanda and UK registered charity Unity of Children. CCPRWA was formed in 1998 following the genocide, by a group of Rwandan’s who had grown up as orphans in Uganda and with the support of a number of international organisations runs a number of different programmes in Rwanda, supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children across the country. From the beginning of July I’ve been working with the charity in Rwanda formulating and implementing a strategy for the development and sustainability of all their activities. At the same time I am overseeing a major capital development at the Nsinda Centre, a vocational training school run by CCPRWA in Rwanda’s ... read more

On Our Own! Although it was a bit sad leaving all our mates on the truck, it was exciting for us to contemplate doing our own thing at our pace. We drove out of Joburg airport in our little blue Clio, immediately having to negiotate city centre motorways and traffic. Fortunately our map seemed pretty clear and we found our way to Fourways, the northern suburb of Joburg where we had booked accommodation. Unfortunately there was a mistake in the directions we had been given, so we were driving around the area for ages before we found the hostel. However, this gave us a good opportunity to check out the local amenities and we got excited about the huge shopping malls after 5 weeks overlanding! Eventually we bumped our way down a dirt track to ... read more

OK, I know we have been really slack and left the blog hanging half way through the trip - Sorry - no excuses. After we left the Gorilla's in Rwanda we headed back to Kosoro in Uganda for the night before the start of the return trip to Nairobi with a few stops along the way - at hopefully, a more leasurly pace!!! We had already covered a massive distance in the first 7 days and had an amazing experience with the Gorilla's on day 8. Day 9 - Left Kosoro at 5.30am (finally getting used to the early starts) and travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park (about 9 hours later). We enjoyed a late afternoon cruise on the Kasinga Channel in the park which apparently has one of the worlds largest concentrations of Hippos along ... read more

Diary of a volunteer Ghana 2007 ‘This volunteering is bloody hard work! Both mentally and physically.’ This entry from my travel blog more or less summarises my 8 weeks of volunteering. On 6 January 2007 I left behind the cold weather in Scotland and the comfort of my home and set off for Ghana in West Africa. My voluntary trip was organised by Cross Cultural Solutions, an American based charity who operate volunteer programmes around the world. I’ve been asked many times what made me go, but the truth is I don’t know. I remember watching a programme about the Live 8 concert that took place in 2005, and although I’m not 100% certain, I think this was a factor in my decision to go to Africa. It was not an over-night decision - I’ve always ... read more

Greetings all! Unfortunately my time in South Africa has come ot an end. What an amazing 12 days it has been. In this post we have: my safari, attacking monkies, Johannesburg crime, and the apartheid museum. Let's get started... Upon my arrival in Johannesburg I was greeted by Patrick, the owner of the hostel I was staying at. That night, we had a couple drinks together and watched cricket until 2 in the morning. I guess you could say that we're pretty much best friends by now... The next morning I was whisked off to Kruger National Park to chase some animals on a three day safari. to be perfectly honest, the safar ididn't quite live up to my expectations. Out of the big five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) we only saw two- a ... read more

Happy Canada Day everyone!!! I know this is getting published late, but I am trying to stay in sequence with the days and events... obessive-compulsive maybe? Anyhow... We had a work party day on Saturday that had everyone cutting down some tall grass, and filling in low-lying areas to eliminate standing water... mosquitoes love the water, and snakes love the grass. Afterwards, I had blistered hands from cutting the grass with a long angled machete, (picture a 5-iron with a blade on the end), but we all shared a great meal catered by a local woman. We had a bunch of food I couldn't recognize, but liked, and some beans, goat, and even FRESH PINEAPPLE. What a treat... all for 6 Sudanese Pounds which is about $3 US. It was good to get out and ... read more

Today we hung out with the kids in our family giving them gifts from home and playing UNO. We started out with a structured game, but by the end it was a free-for-all and whoever could throw their cards down the quickest was the winner. We like their game better, definitely more exciting.... read more

Arriving in Casablanca 3 hours late and arriving at 1am didn't give me a lot of time to experience the city. After waking my roommate for the trip, I slept well and woke up the next morning to introduce myself. Her name is Sarah and she is from Sydney. I am travelling with a company called Intrepid who do adventure travel. Our group is 12 people and I am the only American (thank shiva) all Aussie and English, and finally our tour leader, Margeaux, who is French. The first few days were a whirlwind, traveling by train to Rabat (the capital), and Meknes, famous for its handcrafts. As the group was getting to know each other a bit more on the train journeys, I revealed my profession, and suddenly everyone had aches and pains, where there ... read more

Mambo! Yep mum - sorry - I'm vegetarian again. If you look at the last picture here then it may help you understand why. Actually, all the current volunteers have gone veggie. I'm not even sure you would call the stuff meat. Getting really quite bored of the food here. Beans, peas, bananas, avocados, chipatis, rice, potatoes and pasta. Think that covers the menu. Yum! I'm sure you're all jealous. This is why for Helen & Mike's last night we treated ourselves and went to a 'Western' restaurant. It was full of Mzungus. Patrick (our African volunteer coordinator) said he felt out of place! I haven't said too much about the volunteer house partly because it's crazy. We would be way better than Big Brother. Between the staff and the volunteers there is always something ... read more
