For those of you who do not know, two parents from North Shore climbed Kili several summers ago and learned of a school run by their porter in nearby Njoro village. UIpon seeing the state of the school they decided they wanted to help, and now nearly 4 year later a NGo has been created and property for a new school has been purchased. The NGO is called Kilimanjaro Childrens Foundation. Part of the reason for my visit over the next four days is to lay out a trip for next summer where 20 or so members of the North ... read more

We awoke this morning in beautiful Akeru lodge at around 6AM and proceeded to the open air 4x4. The sun was still down and the air was still very cold. As soon as we left the lodge, Sam (our tracker) spotted rhino tracks. A rhino had just passed our lodge during the night. We spend a few minutes tracking the rhino - including some time when we dropped Sam off on his own on foot - but the tracks led to an area we could not enter. However, the first character we ran across was none other than Max. Max was still in musth, but seemed much happier to ignore us and munch on his tree (see picture). Danika even grew to like Max, quite a feat considering her considerable distrust of him from the ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Coast Province » Watamu June 28th 2007

Saturday 23rd I’d given up on kite surfing and Dan, Claudie & Lucy invited me to go with them to the Northern coast. Following 5 matatu (minibus), a ferry and a bus up the coast, we arrived in Watamu. We’re staying in a basic hostel and I’m sharing with Lucy, so finally she doesn’t have be the gooseberry! We went for a wander to the beach and got bargaining for a fishing trip (for them) and snorkelling for all. Food at the hostel took forever to come (like Malawi, Dad, but worse), and it was the wrong order when it did finally arrive. We saw him run out to buy an onion to make my order, which wasn’t worth eating in the end. Lots of mosquitos about, so hid under Claudie & Dan’s net to ... read more

Hey again! I may be going on a communication rampage now that I can, so hopefully am not boring you with all the photos. Had to share these ones though - am sure you'll see why. Margaret, who works at the lab and who also provides a lot of support for the orphanage that Brigid works at, has her father and brother over from Australia to visit. So, to welcome them, the orphanage put on a shindig. The orphans, their guardians, the teachers and the Upendo mamas (women who support the orphanage both financially and practically) organised dinner and singing, and Margaret's brother performed a magic show which kept the kids thoroughly entertained. The kids performed some poems and songs they had learnt - from a 'welcome to Upendo' song to a poem about AIDS ... read more

The wonders of (speedy) internet... Africa » Kenya » Coast By Katherine HowellJune 28th 2007Katherine HowellHi all! After 3 weeks of almost non-functional internet, we finally have a faster connection at work. Very glad of this as it means I am now able to look up articles and reliably send emails (obviously essential when doing research and when your boss is in another country!!). And, perhaps more importantly, am now able to post the rest of the Lamu photos. Enjoy! Love, K x... read more

We arrived back in Kenya a few days ago, and stayed again in a campsite near Eldoret. We pretty much spent two entire days travelling on the truck, but then arrived in a campsite at Lake Bunyoni, where we camped among hippos! On the way to Lake Bunyoni we came to a large ditch where the road had collapsed and there was a lorry stuck in it, we tried to help out for a bit but after the Army arrived our tour leader decided it was no longer safe for us to help, so we went a bit further away from the road and threw rocks into the ditch to fill it up and create our own road! Having successfully navigated this obstacle, we then had to drive through a river and a really muddy patch ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town June 28th 2007

Since I haven’t done anything too adventurous or touristy this week on account of the whole school and class thing getting in the way, I decided that I should update my devoted readers on the culinary and nightlife scenes in Cape Town. I still have plenty of things that I want to try, but just to recap some of the highlights of the last two weeks (I can’t believe I’ve been here for two weeks already!) The staple place we’ve been has been Café Manhattan. Manhattan is the heart of the gay nightlife in Cape Town, but also happens to have the best hamburgers I’ve ever tasted in my life. These things are huge! And they’re only $7. On Sunday nights, Manhattan hosts one of the premier musical acts in the city: Three Tons of ... read more

Nice flight over the pond to London. Got to spend most of the day in london which was great. just kinda walked around a bit, saw the highlights (picadilly circus, trafalgar square, the thames, big ben, the eye, etc) then back on the flight to nairobi overnight. got to nairobi, managed to get our bags transferred to precision air for our flight to mwanza. erin and addys bags, however, didn't make the final cut. as of right now addy has her bag but erin still has nothing. so we are staying another night in mwanza to see if they show up tomorrow. fingers crossed! we flew from nairobi to killimanjaro (i don't know how to spell that haha) and we saw hte mountain behind some clouds. itw as crazy! not much to do here in mwanza, ... read more

A side trip north to Alexandria by train We got up early (theme of this journey!), picked up by Hamby, our trip transfer lead, and driven to the Cairo train station by our driver, Ahmed, where we were experienced yet another bout with culture shock. Trains in Egypt are not what they are in Europe, not even what they are in the States (Amtrak), but they are available to all people for low cost in order to move up and down the Nile cities (where 98% of Egyptian population reside and have so for thousands of years). Under the direction of Hamby, Isram Tours had purchased two first class round trip tickets to Alexandria. First class means nice bus-like seats, an air conditioned car and a la carte service for sandwiches, coffee, soft drinks, etc. ... read more

Well! After madly packing up the house, moving, unpacking, and cleaning our rental place, Clinton and I were ready at 11pm the night before we were to head off!!! Very very last minute job as per usual. We didn't get any shopping done so we're without quite a few important items! As I have just found out, we didn't bring our vaccination certificates with us which I've been freaking out over, however we've just been advised that a photocopy (which I have) *should* be ok, we just might be charged a fine for not having the original... every time we pass a border. It is very annoying.. but glad we can still go on the tour! We've done nothing in Mauritius as of yet. Both very jet lagged, and moving weary! Tomorrow we might go on ... read more
