Africa July 2nd 2007

Hello Everyone!!! We are back to Lili and Lew's place from some of our travels within Kenya and WHAT AN ADVENTURE IT HAS BEEN!!!!! Well, I haven't blogged since the 22nd, although I know Cristelle has been been able to make a few posts. This last week had us travelling a lot throughout kenya so our blog opportunties are very sparse. We just returned from an educational trip in the Serengetti (Safari) and got a good snapshot of another aspect of the Kenyan economy. I will blog once here but add in comments about each of the days since I blogged last. I think I am repeating some of it, so sorry. June 23rd, 2007: Moraa came this morning at 9:00 AM to pick up up from the Fulton's place. We spent the morning trying ... read more

Sunday morning we all woke up bright and early (much to our chagrin) to head down to Cape Point, which is the southwestern most point on the whole continent of Africa. It was really an amazing day. The weather was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky, and the sky was this intense blue. In Cape Town, the weather wasn’t too cold; breezy, but I was comfortable just in a light sweater. However, by the time we got halfway down the peninsula, the Arctic wind was coming in and I had to put my fleece on. Our first stop was at Chapman’s Peak, which is the beginning of a strip of highway that was closed for many years due to rock slides. The coastline here is very similar to the Californian coastline, with the hills ... read more

The Land of Thousand Hills So I took a little detour on my way home...For those of you who don't know I changed my return date to the US to allow for a visit to Rwanda. After attending the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda a couple of times the idea emerged and it seemed like a difficult possibility to pass up. The decision was the right one. Our flight with Rwandan Air was beautiful and fromt he moment we stepped off the plane we knew it was going to be an incredible experience. Rwanda is spectacular and one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. It is so different from Tanzania in so many ways. For starters there s no flat land to be seen, and the terraced mountains are gorgeous. Aside from that ... read more

This last week, we took a small, family vacation to Peponi Beach. John had a week off in between the campaigns and starting a new quarter at the school, so we took advantage of the opportunity to have some family time. The beach is absolutely beautiful. Even better, there were only two other families at the beach, so we basically had the whole place to ourselves. We stayed in what they called a "family banda". It was a small, two room thatched hut. The floors were cement and the walls were half cement/half thatch. Daniel loved it and kept calling it out new house. :) Every morning we woke up, the kids asked about the water. Daniel would ask if the water was still there(he was afraid it would disappear over night.) and Abby would simple ... read more

We arrived in SA just fine--I whizzed through passport control on my SA passport, while Ross and Owen took 45 minutes to get through the "other passports" line. We zoomed over to the domestic terminal and asked about getting on an earlier flight to Joburg. After waiting and waiting for them to board all scheduled passengers, we were sad to hear that we wouldn't be on the flight after all. Exhausted does not begin to describe how we were feeling! So, back past security and into the 1Time line again we went. About this time, we discovered that a belt in the baggage-moving system had broken, and consequently, EVERY check-in desk was at a standstill. No flights were leaving, because they wanted bags to go with the passengers, and bags were not leaving the check-in area. ... read more

Today we said goodbye to Victoria Falls and made the journey down to Cape Town. You'll notice that we have skipped a few days in the blog, so I'll update you on those. We arrived in Zambia on the 29th of June and headed to our hotel very near the falls. When we arrived, we were greeted by some locals doing an African dance (with accompaniment from two small English boys). The hotel itself was large, but - as we found out over time - a bit of a tourist trap. OK, scrap that. It was entirely a tourist trap. We were severely disappointed with the hotel, which was asking for $16US for a BLT sandwich. One highlight of the hotel was that we discovered Savanna Cider. It's a must try if you are ever ... read more

We left the hotel to head back to TCDC, but we first went out of our way to go to Olduvai Gorge, often referred to as "the cradle of mankind", where they have found many prehistoric remains. It is the home of primitive hominid forms before modern humans, and also the first discovered species of homo habilis. While we were there, there was some excavating going on, a professor from Spain and one from the states, so maybe something else will turn up! Near the gorge are the "shifting sands", basically a large sand dune which has been said to completely move over time. They have markers of where the sand was at five years ago, ten years ago, etc. So then we all just stood on top of it! We're going to Dar es ... read more

For those of you that didn’t know I’ve left life in London and taken a new job as the International Development Director for a small NGO, Children’s Care and Protection Rwanda and UK registered charity Unity of Children. CCPRWA was formed in 1998 following the genocide, by a group of Rwandan’s who had grown up as orphans in Uganda and with the support of a number of international organisations runs a number of different programmes in Rwanda, supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children across the country. From the beginning of July I’ve been working with the charity in Rwanda formulating and implementing a strategy for the development and sustainability of all their activities. At the same time I am overseeing a major capital development at the Nsinda Centre, a vocational training school run by CCPRWA in Rwanda’s ... read more

On Our Own! Although it was a bit sad leaving all our mates on the truck, it was exciting for us to contemplate doing our own thing at our pace. We drove out of Joburg airport in our little blue Clio, immediately having to negiotate city centre motorways and traffic. Fortunately our map seemed pretty clear and we found our way to Fourways, the northern suburb of Joburg where we had booked accommodation. Unfortunately there was a mistake in the directions we had been given, so we were driving around the area for ages before we found the hostel. However, this gave us a good opportunity to check out the local amenities and we got excited about the huge shopping malls after 5 weeks overlanding! Eventually we bumped our way down a dirt track to ... read more
