This past week was my last working week this summer which is totally nuts! On Tuesday I gave a 3-hour (!) workshop to the camp's teachers on children's rights. There were about thirty of them, some Malawian and some refugees. I studied children's rights last fall but we focused entirely on U.S. law so I had to spend some time last weekend reviewing the international law! It went really well and it was as educational for me as for them, I think. The teachers really payed attention in the beginning (the boring part) and then when we broke into groups to start looking at real-life situations they all found very creative ways of appl... read more

Hello and Happy early Canada Day to everyone back home We are currently in Kampala working with the Ugandan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA). We are here to the end of the week and will make a full update then. I have not updated recently and since our trip is more than half done I thought I would share some of the things we have learned and some words of wisdom (or what I try to pass off as wisdom). - warthogs like banana peels - monkeys are far less funny when it looks like they want to get into your tent - do not walk around Ugandan National Parks after dark; you will get eaten (we did not test this theory but I was willing to go with it on faith) ... read more

My patience has definitely grown thin since entering Egypt, but I have no choice but to bite my lip and smile. After all, the locals won't know what I'm saying if I try to make a logical case for anything obvious. The various inconveniences Rob and I have encountered are worth putting up with. Egyptian locals cutting right in front of us for train and bus tickets is just one example. Another is their concept of time, or lack thereof. Forget about printed schedules of any sort. They are mere myths. Don't cross your legs while sitting down in public either. Showing the soles of your feet in public places is very disrespectful. Most of the time we just laugh rather than get angry when faced with time/transportation/rule-based adversities. We've done quite a bit of walking ... read more

So I know up until now, my blog has largely talked about the culture and landscape of the places I’ve traveled. However, it is important for us all to remember that I am in Cape Town on a study abroad program, to learn all about South African law. Today, I had the opportunity to shadow an attorney with the second largest law firm in Cape Town and find out what it’s like to work in the legal profession down here. Another girl from my program, Maura, and I left our house this morning and arrived at the law firm, which is located on the top floor of one of the tallest buildings in the CBD of Cape Town. After making it through security (which was mildly harrowing), we arrived, and were greeted by our attorney, ... read more

Oh my goodness! Thanks to all who have posted a comment. It's great to hear from back home during such a busy trip. So I'm in charge of this next entry, which is great since Todd is in our hotel room doing my laundry! We are currently at the Utalii Hotel in Nairobi but it will be a short stay as we leave tomorrow for a 3-day safari on the Serengetti. We look forward to some relaxation time after our visit to Bumala. Last Tuesday we flew in to Bumala which is a small rural town right on the western border next to Uganda. This is where Charles currently runs a school for children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. There are 90 children in total and the school has baby class, class ... read more

So.... eeearly Friday morning we departed from MS-TCDC in a series of three army green hummer-like safari cars... it was great... Our first stop was the SNAKE PARK... which, as you can imagine, not many of the girls were very excited about... but I was brave and told the guy I wanted to hold a snake, so that I could get a picture, because Juan loooooves snakes.. They also had crocs and turtles there... Next we went to the Maasai Cultural Museum.. for those of you who don't know who the Maasai are, they are an indigenous ethnic group in Tanzania and Kenya which are rather nomadic and are very well-known and distinguished by there red and blue plaid "maasai blankets" and large earlobes, because they stretch them out as children. After we went through ... read more

The day trip to the St. Catharines Monastery in the Sinai region of Egypt was absolutely wonderful. We woke up early in the morning and we headed to the taba border crossing between eilat and egypt. There we ran into some problems crossing because we needed to get a reentry visa to be allowed back into egypt when we go there in a few days. At least the egyptian pound is very much so less than the US dollar unlike the Jordanian Dinar. Anyways, we met up with our guide and driver and we took off south west headed towards the monastery. Along the way we saw some remarkable sceneries and mountains located all in the heart of the desert during which our guide Ahmed told us all the stories from the Koran and Bible of ... read more

So, I know the last entry was kind of a downer. But, i guess that is life. Anyways, what I was unable to include was the more uplifting part of my Monday in Lira, in northern Uganda. So, after we went to the camps in the morning as I previously described, myself and about half of the group went to this center for formerly abducted children and disabled children. We had driven up to Lira with a SIT student from the semester program and he had worked at the center during the semester and had invited us to come by for a visit, little did we know what we were getting ourselves into. we got there and before telling us anything, they let us know that the kids were preparing for a dance off with us!! ... read more
