Left Nairobi in a little twin otter plane full of european tourists. Flew in with enough time to do an afternoon game drive on Safari. We saw 4 of the big 5. Lions, giraffes, rhinos, and elephants. Not bad for the first day. The scenery, hotel, food is wonderful. We watched a Maasai dance and lecture which I videotaped and showed them after. It was quite amusing watching these fierce warriors giggling as they saw themselves on the video. T... read more

Hello Bumala! It looks like the flight is later than expected. Back to the school. I had a chance to filmm some one on ones with the Form 1 class and take some more pics. Todd and Cristelle met with the teachers and Cristelle did a presentation on various teaching techniques. It was a very productive and insightful presentation. Goodbye Bumala. This time for sure. Charles drove us back to Kisumu where we purchased two razors (for haircuts) and an iron for the sewing class. Todd and Cristelle stay in Bumala until Tuesday. Flew back to Nairobi (and Joseph). Went on an excursion to help shoot an educational movie on an agricultural development at a nearby farm. I had the pleasure of meeting Peter, a retired government employee, the minister of agriculture and the District officer. The chief was also present. While there, I invited the minister to our project in July when we will have our new organic farming project underway. By the time I was done, it was too late to say goodbye to the kids but I did manage to say goodbye to teachers and a few kids. Kathy came across 60 extra finger puppets which we distributed to the children that waved to us everyday on the way to the school. They were delighted with the puppets. Daniel finished the living fence with the Form 1 kids and Helene finished planting ... read more

Today we passed out soccer jerseys to the soccer team and also jerseys to the kindergarten class. The jerseys for the kindergarten class were donated by the Thorsby kindergarten class. We also passed out artwork and a picture of the Thorsby class to the kids. The children were very interested in the picture and were delighted with their new shirts. We also handed out some books and games to the library. The sewing class made bags to go with the macrame keychains. There was also a debate between class 3, 4, 5. The topic was traditional life is better than modern life. T... read more

Day 7 – Arrived early at the school with a group that we ran into at the hotel. The group is a non profit well digging organization. They will dig wells for very little and provide pumps that will last about 10 years. They came and inspected our existing well and discussed the possibility of adding hand pumps by the school for hand washing etc and drip irrigation for our new agricultural program. Today, we planted half of the living fence (about 700 plants). It started with Daniel (volunteer), Daniel (gardener) and myself. It wasn’t long though before the Form 1 class came out to help. They worked extremely quickly. Kathy and I gave them our cameras to use and experiment with. We noticed that everyone posed differently than when we would take pictures. They would ... read more

Day 6 – Sanitary napkin template was turned into a very successful prototype by the sewing class. I measured out the land to build a “living fence” around the perimeter. Termites have eaten away at the barbwire/wooden post security fence. Kathy and I drove out with Charles to a farmer’s house in the country and picked out the plants for the fence. Beste had great success teaching a few art classes with the kids and Kathy and I handed out pictures to all of the kids. This went over really well. We also played some soccer or “football” as they say here. Kathy scored an awesome goal. Helene and Daniel went to visit the grandmothers and determined some of their needs. Todd and Cristelle met with the Chief and various government officials. We should soon be ... read more
