After heroic efforts by both Nana and Abby to help us get ready for our trip, we arrived at Hartsfield at 2:45 p.m. on April 29, 2006. We had enough luggage to convince people that we were MOVING to Peru rather than visiting - and several people commented on it. Shuffling 3 suitcases, a duffle, a pack n play, 2 carry-ons, a diaper bag, a backpack and a baby backpack carrier along with two kids is no easy feat - let me tell you! Luckily only one of our bags was overweight so we redistributed a bit and all was well. (I'd like to see someone pack a full size suitcase full of something other than feathers and have it weigh under the 50 lb limit!) Was a little perterbed that the guard made me remove ... read more

I will start posting in this blog once I am actually about to go abroad, which will be on July 19th, 2006. Until then, I will be working my butt off in Kingsland, Georgia. So if anyone goes to Florida, stop by and say hi (I will be insanely bored there). Well, here is the plan of my trip: First, I will spend a month and a half in Russia. I will fly into Moscow and hang out with my friends for a few days, then I will take a train to Ulyanovsk, my hometown. While I am there, I will also try to visit some cities near by - Samara, Tolyatti, Kazan', etc. And the most exciting part - I will visit the village that my mom grew up in - Slavkino, as well as ... read more

Deltona-Atlanta 10 hrs. Leaving home was emotionally difficult. My soulmate, Jimmie, and I said a tearful goodbye. I wish he could go with me. From Deltona I took by-ways, not highways. SR 326 is a beautiful drive across Florida. The road went through the Goethe National Forest and a lot of horse land. SR 326 ended at SR 19 which I took all the way to Atlanta. I went through Americus (remember, the Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd movie?). I hit Atlanta at the best possible time (sarcasm), rush hour. The traffic is fast, furious, close and crazy…that is when you are not completely stopped. Then 75/85 is a parking lot. My friend Susan (couch #1) greeted me with shrimp scampi and a bottle of tequila, which we managed to drink half of before the night was ... read more

Hey there everyone! Welcome to the blog of Angela, Kelly, Gayle and Mary Beth. We are counting down the days until our trip! We are headed to Reykjavik, Iceland for a couple of days over the Memorial Day weekend. On May 25, Kelly, Gayle and I will be flying from Birmingham, Alabama to Baltimore, Maryland where we will meet up with Mary Beth (who is flying from Atlanta, Georgia). We will then take a 5 hour flight from Baltimore to Reykjavik on Icelandair. Mary Beth’s cousin Evelyn has her own group of seven coming from Atlanta that will also be on our flight and in Reykjavik at the same time that we are there. I hope that we can post some entertaining updates while we are gone (and some pics). The picture at the beginning of ... read more

April 5, 6 &7 - Hilton Head, South Carolina --- The RV parks we choose keep getting better - the Hilton Head RV Resort in South Carolina is phenomenal. The azaleas are in bloom and our site has a hedge of them. Great pool, hot tub, etc. Beautiful landscaping. Snack bar until early afternoon. The only thing that might be missing is the nice Tikki Bar and pub food we enjoyed at the RV Park we stayed at in Sarasota. April 7 to Savannah from Hilton Head via water taxi. Signed up for a historic tour via trolley. Good narrators - riders can hop on, hop off at some 15 stops. Nice way to get a quick (90 min.) orientation. Lunch at the Pirates’ House southern style buffet for him; shrimp and oysters for me, a ... read more

Background: My mother and her sister were born in Budapest Hungary in the 1920's and lived in the wintertime in Budapest (Pest side) - and in the summer time they went to the summer home which was in Manya (called Nagy Manya) which was at that time part of Czechoslovakia, now it is Slovakia. My mother's recollection was that the village of Manya was very little with only one little grocery store and one doctor. They had to go to Verable (a nearby town) to shop which is about 10 kilometers from Manya. The Manya country house had about 80 rooms and a staff that included a governess (German and French), 1 or 2 teachers (home study).), 2 maids, a cook, 2 cook helpers, and a butler that serve meal (they wore white gloves). All was ... read more

The ride on the greyhound bus from Orlando to Atlanta was some what eventful; one man got thrown off the bus for being rude to the driver and then proceeded to throw stones at the bus; one man behind us had just got out of jail and was telling some great stories; a woman kept going on about how she was ex military and told lots of horrible stories about Iraq; at one rest break the police had to be called as there was no room on the bus and the people waiting to board were understandable angry; one man started an argument with some other man just because he looked at him! Then the ex military woman was threatening to snap the man that kicked off into four pieces. So the journey was nothing like ... read more

Hi everyone! Welcome to my online travel journal/blog! I'll be writing every now and again to record things that I want to remember; but I'm also writing to keep you all updated on where I am in world and what I'm doing. As most of you already know (I hope), I'm headed to Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Belize to participate in a travel study program arranged by Furman's history and political science departments. Right now I'm in Atlanta, GA at the Hampton Inn & Suites with a few of the other students waiting for tomorrow's flight. It's been a CRAZY weekend ... but 'crazy' in a good, fun way. :-) I had the best weekend send-off a person could ever wish to have from my family and friends Friday night through Sunday evening (movie ... read more

Howdy ya'll. It has been a little while since our last entry; so let me give you a quick recap. In the last week we've traveled through San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Hot Springs Arkansas (never heard of it? neither had we), Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville and we are now in Atlanta (some of you might know it as Hotlanta or the A.T.L.) The trek through the mid-south (turns out there is such a thing as the mid-south) has been an interesting adventure. Being ocean lovers, it is hard for us to imagine anything else but living near a huge mass of water. However, the land locked states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee have more than made up with its lack of waves with its hospitality, history and BBQ. Mmmmmm.....meat. We began this episode by ... read more

Here I am, back at my house in the burbs. Although I can't believe that my Chile experience is over, I am glad that I'll be back at Furman tomorrow to begin my last term there. Woah. I heard some good news this week...I have an interview for Teach for America. woohoo! It's the next step in the application process, and I really want to be a part of that program so we'll see what happens. free-travel adventures: February 15th: Angela Hanor, Laura Whitesides, Suzanne Prak, and Morgan load the bus (called a "bed bus") for the 24 hour trip to San pedro de Atacama February 16th: 30 hours and two buses later, we are still on a bus. Turns out that there was a big storm and the highway was closed in some places. We ... read more
