Only one more day until we leave! Some quick hits from yesterday: WRAS FM is the Georgia State University student radio station. They broadcast at 100,000 watts, which is an enormous signal. The station is commercial-free, and they play great music. Today I listened in on a live set from The Willows. S.T.O.P. is Douglasville's answer to Kinkos. It's an independent copy shop somewhat in the spirit of Gnomen Copy in State College, PA, but only somewhat. Don't ask me how to pronounce S.T.O.P. -- is it "stop" or perhaps "ess tee ooh pee"? I'd put this question in the same category as how to pronounce ESRI, "ezz ree", "eee ess arr eye". Anyway, S.T.O.P. is within walking distance of the Douglas County county records building, and convenient for all your police report copying and faxing ... read more

Just a quick posting tonight. I spent a lot of today adding our cds to our itunes music library and uploading them to my ipod. Yes, I sprung for one at Best Buy, and it's pretty cool. We borrowed a bunch of cds from Sherry's friend Nicky, including, yes, an EP by the infamous 'The Mr. Move', one of our celeb sightings in the . So, at least we'll have some upbeat, feel-good music to share with locals and other travelers when we circle the globe. I found a web link for those that want to learn more about Reggie C. Piles of packables are now forming in Sherry's mother's living room, signs of our ever-approaching departure date. -Cory ... read more

Panera Bread Co. is my friend. Thank you Panera Bread Company for your comfortable seating and free wireless internet. Today I have a few topics to cover. Towards the end you'll find a little announcment about a simulcast of my travel blog via a new medium. This is something that I'm pretty excited about, and you GIS/Geographer types should definitely have a look... but first, a few other items A run of bad luck I'm a firm believer in streaks, like in sports where a team has a winning or losing streak, or a baseball hitter is said to be "a streak hitter". One thing that's said to come in streaks is bad luck, and Sherry and I have had a bit of a medium-rare streak of bad luck: * Sherry's been dealing with some pretty ... read more

If you've received multiple 'notification' emails, my apologies. I'm trying to post two entries in one day, and somehow I botched it. I'm posting this one under the 21st, even though today is the 20th. The reason for two entries, well yesterday marked the end of the North American portion of our trip. Some numbers: * Number of countries: 2 (US and Canada) * Number of states (including DC): 20 (CA, NV, AZ, UT, CO, NE, IA, IL, IN, OH, PA, NY, NJ, DE, MD, DC, VA, NC, SC, GA) * Number of state capitals: 4 (or 5) (Denver, Lincoln, De Moines, Trenton (close), Atlanta * Number of great lakes in view: 3 (Michigan, Erie, Ontario) * Number of interstates that we drove on (2 digit): 16 (I-10, I-15, 70, 76, 80, 86, 88, 90, 94, ... read more

What are twin sisters for if not to remind you that you’ve forgotten something, e.g. a homework assignment, parents’ wedding anniversary, birthday of a common sibling, etc? In this case, my sister pointed out to me yesterday that I’d forgotten to tell you what we did during our two day visit to Alexandria (as did Rusty today). For fear of retribution (mainly from my sister) in the form of a low or no-value future Christmas gift, I will provide a brief summary of our activities there. I should point out that the ‘no-value gift’, also known as the ‘no-gift habit’, was practice that allowed me to make it more comfortably through the holiday season during at least one of my college years, a fact that would not be lost in my sister’s memory… …our visit to ... read more

I've always heard about this historical park, where several Civil War major battles occured. Thus, I had a huge expectation on what to see and to experience in this park. Spring was on the air, and the park was packed with people. According to the park ranger, this wasn't busy at all compared to later in the spring/summer. Riight, so I made a mental note not to visit Kennesaw during that time. We climbed up the Kennesaw Mountain peak, one mile off the Visitor Center. We passed by many different kinds of people, starting from the typical old tourist couple with huge cameras hanging off their necks, crying baby in a stroller pushed up the hill by its obese mom, 7 year-old kid playing 20 questions with his dad, and some young backpack adventurers eager to ... read more

January 8, 2005, Saturday. Our destination today is a fun trip to Lazy 5 Ranch. We took a horse drawn cart, with buckets of food for the animals. The “Lazy 5” is chock full of hungry animals: water buffalo, giraffes, goats, pigs, deer, etc. etc. It was a neat place for the young and the “young at heart”. January 9, 2005, Sunday. Off we go to Savannah. We had reservations at Skidaway Island State Park, a few miles SE of Savannah. We managed to get in a short bike ride along a nature trail before dark. January 10, 2005, Monday. We drove to the outskirts of Savannah parked the Bothan and headed out on our bikes, to explore. Lots of lovely squares, mini-parks, with huge oaks carefully draped with Spanish Moss by mother nature. We biked ... read more

"A Conversation Overheard at the Urinal Wall between Two Young Men with Short Haircuts at Hartfield International Airport, Atlanta: "Hey man, what gate are you leaving from?" "B17." "Yeah? I'm leaving from B19. Hey, do ya wanna grab something to eat?" "Nah, my flight leaves in, like, 20 minutes." "Well, I hope we see each other again." "Same here," Shake. Tuck. Zip. Shake of the other head, "Actually, no. No, I don't want to see you again, because you know where that would be-" Together they shouted, "Iraq!" Silently I thought, "Heaven." So many young men in uniform today. As our plane pulled away from the terminal in Norfolk in the glow of the sunrise, the muzak piped into the cabin was "Anchors Aweigh," a song known by heart to every sailor who sang it as ... read more

Waar was ik gebleven? Buffalo. ... read more
