... read more

Hadrian's Villa........being emperor definetly has its perks. The Villa itself sits on about 180 hectres!! It is enormous, not to mention it is one of the most complex, architecturally sophisticated places in the world. Good 'ole Hadrian knew what he was doing. As for the villa itself, as you would expect it has all the things that usually make up a good sized town. It has multiple baths, theatres, warehouses, etc. It was more or less and self contained miniature city. All of that being said, Hadrian actually only spent about 2 years of his life there. He traveled a lot, so his time there was limited. If I were him, I don't think I would have left. As with most of the places in Italy, the views were spectacular. We spent about 2 hours walking ... read more

So this morning was pretty mellow, until someone was cooking in one of the downstairs flats and set the fire alarm off.....for 15 minutes!!! Granted we are the last flat in a back corner and it takes a few minutes for people from reception to get to us and shut it off. Silly boys....they left their kitchen door open while they were cooking. Our smoke detectors are in the middle of the flat (in the hallway) so if you shut the kitchen door then the fire alarm shouldn't go off. Although apparently some people smoke cigarettes in their room, which they're not supposed to, and that also sets the fire alarm off. It's so irritating! Plus smoking in your room is absolutely disgusting....you smell like cigarettes all the time. Yuck! So there it is....the morning of ... read more

So, sorry about not puttig up all the posts I promised. Last weekend Jay and I hiked up Sir Arthur's Seat. It's basically a big rock formation/big hill in Edinburgh. It's the highest point and from the top you can see the whole city. It was a lot of fun. Up top it was incredibly windy. In fact all of Edinburgh is extremely windy. Apparently it's called the windy city of Europe. Edinburgh has been great. I forget if I already posted my courses, but they are: Several Variable Calculus, Economics of Developing Countries, Economic Transformation of East Asia, and Italian I. All of the courses are with regular University students (ie, not visiting students only). Both of the econ courses are taught by the same professor. I have no classes on Friday. And every other ... read more

There was a little bit of smetana left after Tamara Aleksandrovna had put some over my blini this morning. She said "open wide" and spoon fed it to me! Yartek was as normal. Viktor for conversation and Lena for grammar. I'm about to finish my first month of classes. I'm starting to feel at home, Yaroslavl doesn't seem so big any more and I'm used to the living arrangement. I walked home via the football stadium, and bought my ticket for saturday's game against Torpedo Moskva. I'll have to sit on my own for the first half because Chris J will be at a folk music concert until 4.30, but I still want to go. It would be great for the small town team to beat one of the Moscow clubs. I fell asleep as soon ... read more

On the eve of my last day at work I thought it wise to update you all on the past and coming months activities. Work has been chaos but the party starts tomorrow night at Angel in the Field and then on the All Bar One, W1. I imagine that this will end in the wee hours of Saturday morning and carry on until Lorena's farwell on Sunday night at the Smoke Rooms in Clapham. I can't wait for Tuesday when I head off to Malmo and Lund in Sweden, the to Copenhagen, Denmark, and if time to Stockholm. I then get back for one night of recovery and washing before heading off with the girls to Marrakesh. To top that off I bought a ticket up to Manchester and plan to spend a week stomping ... read more

Hello my beloved followers. Well, this is my last night in Prague and it has been interesting. It definetly is a beautiful place, but I think I am just overwhelmed by the tourists. THe only language I have heard in 3 days in English. From the unintelligible English of the rowdy Irish in the Irish pub, to the little old British couples sipping their tea to the scores of Americans and Aussies. I dont' think there are any Czech people in Prague. Everyone I know said "oh the people are beautiful, you'll be amazed." Well that is a vicious rumor. This is land of the mullets. I really think its not their fault, I really think this country is stuck in the 80's (which is A-OK by me!!!). I think what happened is that they had ... read more

Last night was fantastic! It was a lot of fun but I'm pretty much partied out. I might go to the last event of the week, but we'll see. It's utter craziness to go out every night of the week....it puts one big dent in your wallet. Sheesh! Anyways, this morning I waited around to see if Ruth and Jana were going to go shopping in the city centre. It would have been fun to go with them, if they actually did go, but by noon I wouldn't have made it. So I hung out a bit with my flatmates. Then I headed over to check out the Nottingham Ultimate Frisbee team. They were really nice and so I've joined the team. It'll be good to meet new people and also grasp the game a bit ... read more

Dober Dahn friends, Well well our last few days in Croatia were spent very well indeed. After leaving the island of Brach we went to a Davis cup match ( Team tennis semifinals Croatia vs Russia) Croatia won which was really monumental because they have never made it to the finals....so much energy in the stadium and great tennis. They all sang and danced after match... We then headed to the island of Korculla...We again met a crazy guy offering us a room...he said it was only 300 meters from town...it turned out to be about 2 kilomters...oh and by the way he wanted us to SHARE a twin bed...haha...um no...we got a ride back to the center of town where we met this awesome Croatian guy who lived in Australia most of the year. He ... read more
