Europe » Poland September 24th 2005

Day 2 in Poland began with a visit to John Paul II’s house in Wadowice, Poland. It was amazing to see the place where JPII spent the first eighteen years of his life, the years that laid the ground work for the person he would become. (There’s a thought, I walked around on the same ground as JPII did during the years of his formation). We also got to see the Basilica right next to his house where he was an altar server and I have to say it was one of my favorite churches because it was so cute. This visit to the pope’s house taught me a fundamental difference between Americans and the Polish…actually all of Europe for that matter. See there’s this thing, that as Americans we have been taught since day one, ... read more

(Posted on October 11th by Kim) Venice is the city of my dreams- the answer to my friends in high school who asked “If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?” I never imagined that I would actually go, though. This was Hartley, Texas, population 300 where several people in my graduating class had never even left the panhandle, much less the state of Texas. But on September 24th, I was there wandering through the floating streets and even enjoying on romantic ride on a gondola…just like in the pictures, with an even cuter guy next to me than I’d imagined! Visiting Venice really was a dream come true for me! Even though we only spent a day in Venice, it was well worth it. We arrived just after lunch. I was ... read more

Oi Oi Oi I've been stuck on this beautiful island in the Adriatic now for a week learning how to scuba dive. Tough I know. Well Adam and I were certified yesterday, pretty awesome in that it lasts for your entire life. If anyone comes here be sure to do it through Dolphin Diving center. Fantastic people. We've been on six dives now, 3 beach and 3 boat. The one we went on today was awesome, off the island of Hvar. Went out there and dove for about 40 minutes to this massive rock that drops off to 60 meters. Such incredible beauty. The walls of this rock were a mess of every color under the sun and odd shapes and sizes but together it painted the most beautiful picture. Saw these incredible tiny luminous blue ... read more

Wow what an awesome week! Lloyd and I decided to go to the island of Bol after our new best friend Matejo (Mateyo) kept calling us and telling us how great scuba diving with him was going to be. We arived In Bol on the island of Brac mid afternoon on Sunday...Matej met us at the bus stop and took us to our awesome apartment. We have a kitchen our own bathroom and a large bedroom, all for 20 Euros a night. Two beds of course. We met two guys from SF on the way over. One was wearing a UC Davis Law school shirt, and was instantly our new best friend. We might need a lawyer somewhere along this trip so we got his email address... Anyways. I'm reading a book called The Wind Up Bird Chronical at the moment in which the main character spends most of his time living down a well for reasons of reflection... I found myself in a similar situation today, only on the top of a medieval mound. Kind of the opposite, but the same. I spent my time on the mound napping, playing tunes on Lila and studying bugs that kept crawling over the pages of my book. I have never studied a mosquito so hard! I figured that it was as good as anything to do now, as one day I may not have the eyesight to study such things. I think I got more joy out of one mosquito than twenty have gotten blood out of me... sound bizarre? It probably is. But then, ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba September 24th 2005

Well folks it’s my last full day in Spain and I must admit I’m a little sad to be leaving so soon. I have loved my tour of Andalucia and the cities of Seville, Granada and Cordoba, each one offering something different and something very unique. The people on the whole are very friendly, particularly to tourists who attempt to speak the language. Anyway before I get all teary-eyed I just thought I’d check-in a write about today’s proceedings. Its very handy having the internet café literally in my doorstep and as this is probably my last chance to write until I get to Italy I thought I’d sit down have a beer and write this entry. OK having just opened my Cruzcampo (one of the local drops) I will describe today’s activities. I woke up ... read more

Today we booked both our accommodation in Dover and Paris. We bit the bullet and tried the English Public transport system, which is quite good once you know where you are going and what ticket to buy. We got the bus from Enfield to Turnpike Lane and then got the Underground from there to Piccadilly Circus. Our aim was to go to Victoria Stn to book a ticket to Dover, so we walked in that general direction from Piccadilly Circus. We first went to MacDonald’s to have a quick snack of fries (which taste more like potatoes; a good thing). As we left MacDonalds it started to rain and this only go heavier as the day progressed. From there we walked past Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and many old buildings and Statues. We came to a ... read more

So today I moved myself into my fairly large room. For those of you at UCSC, it's about as big as a double in the dorms. I really like it though because it's the corner room and it has 2 windows with lots of greenery around. The window latches are pretty strange but they work well especially since I can't figure out how to turn both radiators off. I had to stand in a fairly long line to try and sort out my housing in the morning so that I could collect my keys....until Mom came to the rescue and called fixing the mixup. So I got pulled out of line and given my keys!!! Yes! The rest of the day was pretty much spent unpacking. Then I went to the pub for a meet and ... read more
