Growing up in Australia, Stonehenge seemed so far away. I had wanted to go there for such a long time, so it was a pretty special day. It's a shame you are not allowed to touch the stones, but a great experience nonetheless. Apparently the Druids had nothing to do with Stonehenge. Whenever I think of Druids the image of Getafix from Asterix & Obelix pops into my head. Why am I telling you this? I have no idea. Salisbury Cathedral is nearby, so I stopped off to have a look there as well.... read more

Europe » Greece » Pelopennese October 2nd 2005

Sunday 2 October: a long day Awake early, ring Alitalia to check the bag has arrived. It has! After breakfast we drive back to the airport in glorious sunshine with lots of views south across to the mountains of the Peloponnese. So we pick up the bag and begin again. Rearrange today’s itinerary a bit to take account of the lost morning, decide to miss out on Acocorinth and put some kilometres on the car. The multilane motorway runs out at Corinth and we begin to experience “real Greek” driving. The A road has about a lane and half on each side and it is soon apparent that the idea is to pretend it is a dual carriageway. There is clearly a very different highway code in operation - solid white lines do not appear ... read more

With the sound of Rachel and me! Laughing, that is - we had such a great reunion. She met me at the train station and we trolled around Old Salzburg in the rain, eating and having coffee and talking a mile a minute. Zipping through the Austrian countryside via train was beautiful. There were low-hanging clouds and forests that are the stuff of fairytales. Coming into Salzburg I caught a glimspe of the mountains - Rach's "alpity alps" - real mountains, jagged and snow-capped and ancient-looking in the cloudy dusk. On Friday Rachel had class, so I explored the old city on my own, enjoying the beautiful (baroque) churches, squares and elaborate fountains. I particularly enjoyed the water spouting from the statue-horses' noses, with the clipclop of horse feet from the real horses, drawing carriages right ... read more

Last night Mitch and I had our first impromtu house party. Officially it was in honor of our room mate Uri's 30th birthday (we even had chocolate cake). But Uri was in London, and no one in attendance knew Uri. Innocence often fades away with the consumption of alcohol. I discovered this last night when Mitch and I went clubbing with our normally shy house mates and their friends. Thankfully Mitch and I were sober, and though I did the chest dance and poured cups of sweat, I managed to spend yet another night in my cold bed alone. Today, the Lords day; time for rest, relaxation, reflection and a professional rugby game. The Leeds Tykes stadium is 2 blocks from our house and the Powergren Cup game is on. Yesterday Mitch and I attempted another ... read more

Well, one entire stormy day driving back to London. I give us a C+ on finding the hotel, again the streets changing names, excuses, excuses. Their one and only parking place has been promised to us as long as we are here and thankfully someone helps Buff park. Next day we see a Smart car, whose owner is very anxious to show it off to us. Pretty cool and roomier on the inside than you would think. We really only plan to take the car out the one day to Windsor Castle. After that we will Tube or walk everywhere until we drive one last time to the Airport. I could see the relief on Buff's face when we came "home" this day that he would not have to drive anymore. (We've got the route to ... read more

Mike and I took a long weekend climbing break down to the Spanish Costa Blanca climbing region this summer (2005). I've included a selection of pics showing us in action. As always, you don't get to see the best pics as the camera's firmly tucked away once it gets hard! One day we'll have to employ a dedicated photographer to climb alongside us. Any Volunteers?! ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna October 2nd 2005

We've had 2 wonderful and full days in Vienna. Although I was here before (in 1966!) I don't remember the scale of grandiose buildings and monuments. The city is arranged in concentric circles because the original city had a round fortified wall which Emperor Franz Joseph demolished and replaced with fabulous buildings, theatres, fountains, parks, and statues in the 19th century. Vienna is now rejuvenated as a centre of culture. I have to keep reminding myself to look up when walking to see all the ornamentation on the buildings. Domes and statues are everywhere. Yesterday we took advantage of the sunny day to walk in the gardens of Schonbrunn Palace, considered the "Versailles" of Austria. Our friend, Fritz, reminds us that, unlike the French Kings, the Austrian rulers did not bankrupt the country! In the 2 ... read more

This weekend Jay and I went to Cork, Ireland to visit our friend Ryan from Swarthmore. We got in late Friday night and met up with Ryan. We dropped our stuff off at his place and went out for the night. We got back to his flat pretty late and watched some episodes from season three of the OC on Ryan's computer. Sleepless, Jay and I caught the 6AM bus to Dublin. It was a four hour ride through some beautiful countryside. Once we got there we headed to the Guinness factory. We took the self guided tour, got our complimentary pint, and spent some money in the shop. It was a great experience and we were definitely happy with our decision to take the four hour bus ride. We passed on the Irish lunch and ... read more
