Copenhagen is home to 1 million people including all the suburbs and is a really cool city. The weather was amazing when I was there which according to Katrine with whom I stayed (my friend from India) is unusual for this time of year. There certainly is plenty to do here, you need a big wallet though as it is even more expensive than London!!! There is a law that no building can be higher than 5 storeys in the city and being that Denmark is virtually all at sea level you don't get many opportunities to see the city from a vantage point. There is however a very tall gothic church in Christian Town called Vorfrelsers Kirke (Our Saviours Church) which was well worth the climb as the views were excellent. It does not look ... read more

So after leaving the amazing city of Paris. We drove along to Fountainbleau, and to see one of the many palaces made famous during Napolean's reign. It was set amongst some amazing gardens and was a great way to start the day. We then made our way through the central part of France, before reaching our destination, an old chateau for 2 more nights accommodation. It is set in the Beaujolais wine region, just outisde of Lyon, and we arrived to some great views of the vineyards that surround the area. We started with some wine tasting of the local produce, before dinner, which I helped prepared this time .... and it was actually made pretty fun! Our first night saw a beach theme party, so out came the boardies and zinc cream set on the ... read more

Well this was certainly going to be one of those mile stone journeys in life if only for a few minutes and for the grand distance of 12,000 feet! I finally got up the courage to pick up the phone and ring Geoff on the Thursday. Two days only to wait. The problem was that there was an airshow that day and we had to wait. There were other excited or nervous jumpers ahead and I had to be the last one. Still we watched the very glamerous Utterly Butterly lady do her wing walking in the bright yellow airoplane! Yes she even had the blonde hair to match. I must admit it all looked quite exciting. Maybe that's the next thing to do on my 'to do' list! Other jumpers went up and came down ... read more

Europe » Poland September 25th 2005

Our pilgrimage to Poland ended with a trip to the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Europe’s most famous shrine. The shrine gets its fame from the icon of the Black Madonna which has been the source of numerous miracles. The origin of the icon is unknown but one legend says that Saint Luke the Evangelist painted the portrait on a table made by Jesus himself. Saint Helena discovered the image while in Jerusalem searching for the Holy Cross and took it home to Constantinople where it would remain for the next five hundred years. In 803 the image was given to a Greek princess as a wedding gift. The bride placed it in the royal palace at Belz where it remained for about six hundred years. In the fourteenth century the city where the image ... read more

A few days into our stay in Arles Mom and I decided to take a day trip out into the country and do what all tourists do: taste a lot of wine! So we got in our rented car and sighed with relief thinking that we would have a mosquito free day with air conditioning. AC we did have but those little mutant insects are stealth when it comes to finding well hydrated tourists: They crawled in through air ducts or somewhere and continued to buzz around the car. We found if we drove fast enought they settle at the back window so we sped through Avignon and up through Aix en Provence to look for a winery. I must bluntly state, once again, that this place was GORGEOUS! Lavender season was over but the charm ... read more

I went to sleep last night dreading having caught some nasty Russian 'flu, so I was relieved to have woken up with just a headache and a runny nose. I got up late for a Russian fry-up - thankfully I can't taste anything - then Tamara Aleksandrovna insisted I went back to bed until half past one. I watched Goodbye Lenin on my laptop, sent some Russian texts and re-read my vocab book. When she allowed me to get up again I had to wear my woolly hat around the flat. Even though my cold isn't serious I still miss the creature comforts you can have when you're ill in England - even getting some water to drink meant walking to the supermarket to buy some - and when you're not thinking clearly even the smallest ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin September 25th 2005

Sometimes when travelling, I love to just pack myself a lunch pack up a few things, and head out the door without any specific destination or goal. I just wander around and see what I see and soak up the world around me. I feel like one can spend so much time looking at things in Berlin that one is not able to step back and actually see Berlin itself! So, to fight this tendency, I decided to set off for an adventure today. It was a wonderfully sunny and nice day and I figured it would be perfect for hanging around. I decided to start off the day at the newly built new-old center of Berlin: Potsdammer Platz. Earlier, this square was one of the busiest intersections in Europe and has the location of the ... read more

It started just like any other day........ The Great Gorilla Run is a 7km fun run around the centre of London in a full length gorilla suit organised by the Dian Fossey Fund. If you remember the film 'Gorillas In The Mist'. Well Dian Fossey, who the movie is based around started this organisation. I discovered this run in an Aussie magazine (TNT) and signed up immediatley!! Surprisingly I couldnt convince anyone (including Justin) to do it with me, so I did it by myself with Meagan Kelly as my cheersquad. Not only did you have to run around the centre of London in a gorilla suit, as if that wasnt enough, you had to dress up your gorilla in costume. There were cowboy gorillas, viking gorillas, ballerina gorillas, hawiian gorillas, santa gorillas, football gorillas, kiwi ... read more

(Posted on October 16 by Kim) After Venice we headed to Interlaken via a night train to Zurich. My friend Jesi had highly recommended Interlaken as a fun outdoor adventure place for both Joe and I. We had thought we would do something crazy like ice climbing, but by this time in the trip we were both exhausted, out of clean clothes, and tired of spending money. Our lodging was very reasonably priced in Interlaken, but the food was very expensive. When we finally decided on a lunch place in Interlaken, Joe decided he might as well go all out and ordered a steak. Plus, we’d been eating lots of pasta in Italy, and many of the pasta dishes had no meat or much smaller amounts than what we were used to. The steak was pretty ... read more

Time seems to move so slowly here (not complaining…I like it), and yet, as I look back at the week, it already feels like so long ago… Last Saturday was La Notte Bianca - “White Night” - where museums and restaurants and shops stay open all night and there are all kinds of concerts and other performances going on in the streets. It’s basically a time when the three million people who live in Rome, plus all the tourists, are out all night. Brent, Nathan, Brandi and I met up with the humanities students to go out. It started raining, but we went out anyway. The rain only seemed to make the city more crowded - everyone all dressed up, carrying umbrellas, ducking into shops and pubs. But it was pretty cool that a little rain ... read more
