It’s amazing how much we take for granted, until we no longer have it… I went to Juarez, Mexico, on a mission trip the spring break of my freshman year of college. We built a small house in four days for an underprivileged family. Among the many things I learned in that week while we were camping and working, I realized that I am very grateful for modern plumbing - enough said. This summer I learned to appreciate the dishwasher. I didn’t have one (and I still don’t over here), but I know that one day, when I do have one, I’ll remember what’s it’s like to actually have to wash dishes by hand, and I will be grateful. So far this semester, one of the things I have become very thankful for is hot water. ... read more

We had a really cool teaching Wednesday night on children's mininstry. It was such a great perspective on children. The couple that spoke have a ministry out of Guatamala focused on children. They were talking about how people don't really aspire to be children's ministers but only use it as a stepping stone but how incredibly important it is. The children truly are the future. He said the reason revivals happen but die in that particular generation was because the fire is not passed to the children. He said God can work just as mightly through a child as an adult, that there is no such thing as a 5 year old Holy Spirit. The same power that an adult that is filled with the Holy Spirit has is the same in a child. When he ... read more

There is a place in the Tiber by our apartment where the flow over a wall creates a cycle that traps trash. So far in the Tiber I have seen: 6 soccerballs 2 car tires 1 bike tire 1 couch cushion 1 entire trunk of a tree countless plastic bottles After hours of wandering and bad directions from architects (who you would think could read a map), Sarah and I found the international food store. I now have slasa to go on my omlettes and peanut butter to make little sandwhiches (since it is almost 4 euro for 12 oz, they will be little and lightly spread). ... read more

Day three (Wednesday ) in Venice was a frustrating one. I spent a fair part of my day trying to organise the Italy to Croatia leg of my journey. I managed to get a ticket on a train to Ancona, the port that services Split in Croatia but had a frustrating time trying to book a berth on the ferry. I have been busy with sms messages and emails between here and Australia as my mate Bob Vere has been acting as my travel agent for this part of the trip (and was most helpful during the Spanish leg as well). In the end I was unable to get a cabin on the ferry to Split however I will be able to travel cattle class for the 9 hour overnight journey. Unfortunately I wasted a lot ... read more

Since I absolutely must do laundry, mainly because visiting clubs and pubs and such are all smokey that my clothes smell absolutely disgusting, I am in the process of completing this task. And in scoping out the laundry situation, which is pretty cool since it's out the door and 2 steps to the left, the cost of laundry is amazing. At Santa Cruz laundry is $1.25 to wash and $.75 to dry. Well, here it's 1.60 quid and 60p, respectively. So double it and that's what it would be in the US, approximately. Ahh! Well since I don't really have a choice....laundry it is. The cool thing though is that it's the exact same machines as at SC which makes it a lot easier to understand. Beyond the whole laundry issue, I went over to Rutland ... read more

So, we've made it back to Munich! Now, it's time for the long trip back to Houston, then to Austin again. It's midnight 30 here, we catch the subway at 1 (last train to airport), where we'll wait for our 6:45 flight! UGGGGGG We're looking forward to getting home. Once we get there, and sleep for 22 hours straight, we'll upload some pictures, and write a bunch about the places we've been. So far we have 663 pictures (no exageration) from our camera, and another 180+ from Tanya and Wilson! Y'all come back now, hear?? We're on our way.... -Joe... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid September 28th 2005

So I just finished taking my final exam; yes, I already have had a final and have only been taking classes for a month. College in Spain doesn´t start until October, so for the month of September, I have been in the "intensive one month program" to get us accustomed to classes in Spanish and caught up to what a normal Spanish student should know. So I have finished with my first month of classes and will have a new schedule come October. This past weekend was my first full weekend in Madrid. On Friday we went bar hopping and went to a discoteca. I met some really nice madrileños (Spaniards from Madrid) at one bar so was able to practice my spanish skills with them :) Saturday, Maggie, Kate, and I took the teleferico (cable ... read more
