The weather on Terceira and Ponta Delgada was changeable - warm, sunny and thunderous rain. We rode the public buses to see more of the islands and had some wonderful food watching the storms roll in from the south Atlantic. Great fish to eat at every meal and decent wines or beers. Green country aptly named. It seemed every home along the bus routes out of the cities had a plot of land, a cow, chickens or turkeys and corn. the bus was an important connection between the outlying towns and schools and shopping. Had we not feared for our lives during the thunder storms, there are ample walking trails all over the islands. ... read more

Well, I'm here at Heathrow Airport. Sitting. Waiting. Poised. ...well, almost poised, more sleepy really, after spending a rough night in the most lumpy bed in the world in Tooting, but hey, travellers can't be choosers and I'd better get used to lowering my standards. Had an emotional farewell at the departure gate, which was, to tell you the truth, rather drowned out by the feeling of impending doom which was slowly creeping up on me. It's not that this travelling malarky is a bad idea, just that it's not really a very well thought out and planned idea, more of a daydream really that seems to be turning to into reality. My bums going numb, hope we start boarding soon, I can't wait for my little airplane-sized portions of soggy vegatables and bland sauces, mmmm. ... read more

After a not so thrilling Thursday evening, Friday was looking a bit better. Jana and I headed downtown for a few things, namely clothes. What else is new....we're girls. When we were downtown we got really hungry so we ate lunch at Lloyd's pub. It was an okay place although Jana wasn't so thrilled, but we really didn't have much of a choice. Either eat then or keep going with the threat of Jana keeling over....she wasn't feeling so fantastic. That night, feeling much better, Jana, Ruth, Leslie and a few others headed to Broadgate Bar. We hung out for a few minutes and then headed over to The Ark. It happened to be Flirt! night, so the music was pretty good and it wasn't really smokey which was a nice change. However, you still come ... read more

After what seemed like a whole day of flight, accross the Atlantic, over Great Britain and parts of Western Europe, with an overlay in Munich, our plane touched down in Madrid, Spain at 1000pm/22:00 on October 6th. This is my first trip to Europe. First trip out the U.S. really. I have found comfort in learning that there are people in my group who have had the same worries and felt anxiety as I have. While I was still at home, everyone´s question was always, "When are you leaving?"..."Aren´t you excited?" My answer was often, "I´ll be excited when I get there." Well, now I´m here. And, yes, I am excited! The feeling of being here hadn't really hit me til today. We visitied Toledo, España´s first capital city. Madrid, in comparison to Toledo, is like ... read more

Last night was a lot of fun. All of us internation students participating in the orientation went to dinner. The dinner wasn't anything special, but it also consisted of wine tasting =). This region (as I may have already mentioned) is like the Napa Valley of Germany. It's wine country so each table had a few bottles of different wines from Trier. All of them were white wines and were pretty good. Jaime, Matt and I sat with a girl from Belgium (don't know how to spell her name yet) and Mosuku from Japan. Both are very nice. Sitting at the table right next us was a group from Istanbul. =) It was cool to get to talk with them. They were very nice. It was a fun evening of just getting to know people. ... read more

Somit ... read more

Ola peeps! Glad you liked the photos. Thought we'd let you see some more while we have the ability! Had an exceedingly nice day yesterday, pehaps inspired by the glorious weather. Discussed the finer points of the famous composer "Chop-in" with Ben, persuaded him that the Polish beer Zywiec is pronounced "six" and I myself (Dan) uttered the words-"sorry I dont speak foreign" to an innocent Polish woman asking for change. Apparently I also laughed in a nuns face but I do not agree entirely with this. Apart from that we had a lovely walk around 'old town' which was completely rebuilt after its distruction during world war 2. It is very pretty indeed as i'm sure you'll agree from the picture. Today we went up the Palace of culture for a panoramic view of Warsaw ... read more

Woke to banging shutters, a bright but amazingly windy day. Explored the lower town, up and down alleys in this medieval metropolis. Odd bits and pieces in the town museum, worth a look. Watched the world go by. It would be easy to spend a few days or weeks here, a long way from anything - at least out of season. Later in the day we climbed the stairway to the deserted upper town. This one covered most of the top of the rock. Now in ruins except for the church. We of course continued to the top to the ruined citadel. Great views across to the mainland and to sea. In evening we went over to the mainland to a restaurant where is was a case of looking through what there was and then ... read more
