We spent a really laid-back day today at the country house of our friends Sverker and Annika. After breakfast we drove into town and did some shopping in the town center. Most of the stores were filled with summertime visitors and most had big sales going on. Annika told us that it was better to go shopping in Nyköping because the stores are less crowded that in Stockholm and the things they sell are just as good. Many of the brands of clothing and shoes are the same as we see in the U.S. In fact many goods had price tags with prices for several countries including (naturally enough) Sweden, EU countries, and the U.S. The central shopping district of the town is closed to vehicle traffic, and many buildings contain multiple stores, like tiny malls. ... read more

hello all, we are still doing well. our trip to the mountains was relatively uneventful. The gorgeous environment we were expecting did not materialize. Places were quaint, but not well kept or interesting. THe beer was good, vodka good and food also good. THe way of life here is far behind what i thought it would be. The infrastructure is poor, many building are half done or mostly decayed. Gardens grow, but the weeds are competing for space. Harvesting of wheat is still done with a scyth(sp) and piled up in stookes. Women are working everywhere doing the labour, men drive horse drawn carriages on the highways and we had to stop a few times for cows walking down the middle of the highway. It is interesting, but not what I would have expected from the ... read more

Hi all, In Spain at the moment, not as hot as it has been only 30 today with a breeze. Have been walking around Barcelona and looking and listening to al the wonderful sights around the place. Bull fighting is happening tomorrow night which we will unfortunatley miss. We are staying next to the beach - right on the Mediteranian sea very nice although a bit smelly at times. HAd a huge bus trip yesterday nine hours from Lyon. There was a bit of a party last night, we are lucky that everyone gets along so well, at the moment anyway. Tryig to think of other things to day but not a lot to report. We are off to the casino in Monte Carlo in a couple of days which will be interesting. Anyway as always ... read more

I went to the Archeological Museum of Iraklio today. Yes, I saw yet again more pots, vessels, vases, urns and other clay containers. I've seen enough for a while. The museum was fine, well laid out and easy to follow, with English descriptions to all items. They did have a couple of famous items: the King Minos golden ring and the Minoan bulls head figurine. But lot's of clay pots. And now for something completely different I went to the Aquarium. It's 15 km out of town so I had to figure out the long distance buses. All fish a few invertebrates. They say it's the largest aquarium in the Eastern Mediterranean, but it seemed not too big. No Cetaceans, but perhaps that's ok, there isn't enough room for any big sea mammals. There was video ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid July 15th 2006

We've been enjoying ourselves here in this beautiful city. Madrid is a mixture of the old Spanish culture and the new, hip and young blood that is thriving here on the great food, cheap attractions and entertainment, and a never ending supply of new visitors (like us for instance.) I'm headed off for the world's only art walk in the world which includes painting, sculpture, architecture and nature, in one of Madrid's most attractive areas: Paseo del Prado. I hope to see three museams of global renown: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia National Art Centre. I may also have time to see Goya's Madrid, I'll let you know when I get back this evening. Back from walking for five hours in the art section of Madrid and still only got through ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Today I headed to Oxford St for some shopping!!!! Its been so long since I have been shopping. It was a bit of a bonus, as the sales were on and the weather was perfect not hot but sunny. Bought a few pairs of shoes, a skirt, a bag and other stuff. The crowds are annoying and its so hard to walk on the footpath- its slow going. With hands full I headed back to the hostel to unpack my purchases.... read more

Ok, so i just arrived at Milan and what a journey but what a welcome by the families!!! I traveled with my fellow tutors from the camp in Venice but we had to change three trains and get to the underground metro with all our bags... terrible! But when we got to our final destination our families and camp director welcomed us sooo warmly! THe camp director gave us a pot of flowers and we got to our homes right away. I am staying with a family of four in a lovely apartment. I will be staying here for two weeks and then i will be sent off to another mysterious destination hehehe. So far this has been quite the experience, nothing negative has happened so far. I am staying with a family native from Napoli, ... read more
