Weather Report Hot and sunny - again. Decided that my organisation of this assault on Arran had not been all that one would have desire so took the plunge and hired a car for the day. Really the large islands such as Arran, Islay and Mull need a car for one day at least. However it was Saturday and I had no great hope that the one car hire company would have anything available. Arrived at their door just after 8.30. Explained my desires. Lady at counter said ‘you need to be between 25 and 70 to hire a car. Not sure if that was a statement or opinion … Perhaps I have had a hard few days. Anyway she decided I qualified and supplied me with a vehicle for the day. Set off with the ... read more

Ok Zaragora Zaragora is my 3rd pit stop. I met Raquel and Santi during my MSc. I took a train from Barcelona to Zaragora which took me a good 5 hours. It was hot and the A/C wasn't cold enough. I think the train is from the 80s. Raquel picked me up from the train station. They live in the low density residence. They have a 3 bedroom apartment and right next to the river. It is a walking distance to the bars, shops, city central, and the swimming pool. They showed me what is a daily spanish life when I was there. Let me talk about their daily schedule. They work 7 hours during the summer and 9 in the winter. They go to work from 8 to 12 and then head to the swimming ... read more

Day 3 - So sad separating, Reesa went off to Amsterdam for her bike tour in the morning. And the two of us continued de-bugging. Now all of us are paranoid that we're being bitten during the night and we get riled up when somebody has found a new bite. Me and Amie were in the laundromat for a few hours today. We took advantage of the kitchen facilities in our hostel to make dinner. And the night was spent walking about and seeing Paris lit up with flood lamps. Oh and that included watching the Eiffel tower 'sparkle' for a few minutes. The local Parisians apparently hate that part. Angele... read more

A traditional English wedding with a hint of German! The reason I say this is that while the wedding was held is Alice’s hometown of Aspley Guise the Grooms family are German. Although Mark grew up in Australia his parents are German and the majority of their family still live in Germany. There were a lot of people from both sides of the family and friends who traveled some distance for this wedding which I think made it more of a special event. This was the first church wedding I had been to in a very long time. The Vicar did a fantastic job, the best was I can describe the projection of his voice, is hire the “Four weddings and a Funeral” DVD. The ceremony went without hitch and a few tears from the audience. ... read more

And the Israelis are welcome to sing it to the music of “gan sagoor” - of the “16th Sheep”... So what happened? After the hard day we had yesterday, Dana and I decided to take the cable-car up. It was anyway a rather short day, so we got up late, and by 9am Ron started to walk, while we went to the supermarket, very happy and relaxed. After filling our bags with goods for the next 2 days we continued to the cable-car station just to discover it was closed the entire summer season. Unbelievable that the girl in the info center even explained to us how to get there, how she could not know it didn’t work... Well after the little shock and some minutes to recover, we started really late, after 10am, walking all ... read more

Following quite a few full on days, Brendan and I decided to have a relaxing day at home. A friend of Suz’s, Rich came over and we decided to go to the local park “Clapham Common” with bottle of wine and some crisps and hang out in the sun. After taking advantage of free internet connection that Suz’s work kindly provides, Brendan and I decide to have a reasonably early night, while she went off to a wedding. Brendan spent the following morning packing to go up to his Aunty’s for 5 days. We went to the train station at Kings Cross and had lunch at a local lunch bar just outside the station. I walked Brendan to his train which left at 13:02, precisely when his ticket stated, whether the right people were on it ... read more

In the morning I had two missed calls on my phone from Kia. I wondered what was up, but just put it down to more banter from the night before. Then Kia did ring, and it was bad news. Matty had been jumped by a group of blokes as they left the Queens, smashing him over the head with a bottle and then laying into him. From what Kia said, they had walked out together and a bloke had said something to Matt who ignored it, and then once they were passed they jumped on Matt from behind. They took Matt’s phone and valuables, and Kia jumped on top of Matt while they were kicking into him to try and minimise the damage. Two blokes were after Sian, and he ended up around the corner where ... read more

It is 300kms to Vienna and I hope to do it in 2 days. The Radweg is glorious, a 2-3 metre wide strip of tarmac on the levee alongside the Donau winding through wooded gorges, occasionally crossing the river by ferry or bridge. The river is very wide, in places more than 200 metres especially where there is a weir which of course creates a dam further up river. The locks are enormous and the tugs push large barges along the Rhine. Every few kilometres there is a restaurant with cold drinks and cheap meals. I do love being in Germany. The people are a credit to the post-war settlement; the country has come along way from the Nullstunde. Its politicians especially Ardenauer and Willy Brandt have been head and shoulders above the pygmies, with few ... read more
