In the morning I had two missed calls on my phone from Kia. I wondered what was up, but just put it down to more banter from the night before. Then Kia did ring, and it was bad news. Matty had been jumped by a group of blokes as they left the Queens, smashing him over the head with a bottle and then laying into him. From what Kia said, they had walked out together and a bloke had said something to Matt who ignored it, and then once they were passed they jumped on Matt from behind. They took Matt’s phone and valuables, and Kia jumped on top of Matt while they were kicking into him to try and minimise the damage. Two blokes were after Sian, and he ended up around the corner where ... read more

It is 300kms to Vienna and I hope to do it in 2 days. The Radweg is glorious, a 2-3 metre wide strip of tarmac on the levee alongside the Donau winding through wooded gorges, occasionally crossing the river by ferry or bridge. The river is very wide, in places more than 200 metres especially where there is a weir which of course creates a dam further up river. The locks are enormous and the tugs push large barges along the Rhine. Every few kilometres there is a restaurant with cold drinks and cheap meals. I do love being in Germany. The people are a credit to the post-war settlement; the country has come along way from the Nullstunde. Its politicians especially Ardenauer and Willy Brandt have been head and shoulders above the pygmies, with few ... read more

No need to describe the great breakfast. The rest of Irish/English food may not be all that exciting but they certainly give better breakfasts than the Italians and French. James had us on the bus and out of the hotel parking lot before 9:00am. Once again it was a brilliant, sunny day. The temperatures were expected to rise as we went further inland. We were headed to Blarney Castle on the old road through Macroom. Of course, this was probably the only road between the two towns but in any case, I learned after this trip that it was a very historic route. It was along this road that the IRA won their first major victory against the British forces at the Kilmichael Ambush in 1920. A week after "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" where the Brits pretty ... read more

Memorable Giant Weiner Schnitzels. When a backpack similar to mine was frustratingly dumped on the floor and a weary traveller plunked down into the padded airport seat next to me, two thoughts crossed my mind. The first “Why on earth haven’t you checked your backpack in?” and the second, “Bet she’s on the same Intrepid trip as I am”. She was wearing comfortable clothing, hiking boots, had a backpack; albeit not checked in and looked tired. All signs of a young backpacker. I refrained from asking her if she was on the same trip, after all she may consider me socially insane. Besides, I too had been up since 3am to catch the Heathrow Express to be sitting at the departure gates for this early morning flight and my social skills had taken a caffeine deprived ... read more

Okay, so on to Croatia! The two nights in Zagreb were perfect. It gave us a day to explore the capital city by foot and wheel. We had a walking guide from one of our tour books which took us around various aspects of the city including a botanical garden with a Japanese pond, the olde town, and up a funicular railway line to the top of the city. Of all places, I didn’t expect it to be so accessible. We did have two encounters with trams and near, very near, misses! In hindsight, it was quite funny if you could imagine us running away from an oncoming tram. ... read more

So, you're going to Iceland on Honeymoon?!?! Ok, so not the usual destination, but somewhere different. We'd searched the usual trips, 2 weeks on a beach etc etc, but it just didn't appeal, and having both travelled a bit, we wanted to see somewhere interesting that was also a bit off the beaten track. So I looked at companies that did trips to Iceland. We ended up looking at Discover-the-World, I'd known people who had travelled with them before and recommended them, and having used them, I definately would as well. We opted for the fly-drive option (I did not want to spend my honeymoon sat on a tour bus with lots of other people!). Everything was organised for us - the flights, the length of the trip, the hotels (there was some choice in places ... read more

So I guess Montelimar (the Nougat capitol of the world) is too small of a town to list by the blog site, but not too big for the tour. When checking the maps to see how close the tour was coming I thought, hour, two tops by train. Well no, it was four and a half hours one way. But shit... its the Tour! So we embarked on our journey from La Napoule at 5:45 by bike (how appropriate- the trains and busses didnt run eary enough for us to catch the train) to catch out 6:30 train from Canne. We arrive in Montelimar at 11:00, and am imediatly in need of caffiene before we can be excited. Once Caffinated tour fever catches on in a big way. The entire town has embraced the arrival of ... read more

Had a good sleep on my little mattress on the floor and got up to go for a run down to the Palace and National Gallerie on the Champs Elysees. On my return picked up some Peach Ice Tea which has become the cult drink of Europe, take my advice and get onto it! We went walking to teh Shakespeake Bookshop and then onto the glorious Luxembourg Gardens. I made a sandwhich out of some bread, tomato, tinned corn and tuna. Russel thought I was some weird kind of alien I think. It was better than my lunch of kidney beans, capsicum and hard boiled eggs yesterday! On my previous journey to the gardens I hadnt realised how big they were. Its a fantastic place to spend the day and especially good for kids. We found ... read more
