Our first day... after weeks of meticulous planning, was strangely emotional. We took off for Kalmar, skirting Västerås, and heading for Öland. We had originally planned to visit the Västerås Festival, where Zak's friend Jane Kitto was performing. She had given us a free ticket and all, but we couldn't stop by, as we'd end up arriving in Öland way too late in the evening. Being the first day doing this, we were not used to the wind, the speeds, the hours of strain... we seemed to be constantly behind schedule. Just about 60km south of Stockholm, we stopped by the Vidarkliniken, a famous clinic and village founded on antroposophic ideas, and marvelled at their lovely buildings. Weather Hot and sunny - v hot ! All day ! Unlike last night which was cold. V cold. Set-off shortly before eight and headed up the road known as the String which cuts across the middle of Arran. First part as expected v v steep - fortunately not too long and reached summit shortly after 9. The strain of the climb was more than balanced by the delight in sea a golden eagle close-up. Some good photos as it soared across the glen, perched on a telegraph pole and finally crossed overhead. The last four hours of the walk (it was some ten miles) was less exciting although there was much attractive scenery. Several stops to rest, take on liquid and enjoy. Arrived at Blackwaterfoot just before 1pm. Little there other than a small harbour ... read more

We all got together tonight to do an authentic local dining type experience. We walked in and sat down with this wheel of cheese under a hot lamp...interesting to watch the cheese bubble....but anyway the dinner was a wonderful way to say goodbye to everyone as people are leaving at different times over the next few days to come. The cheese was the center of the meal, and was melted over potatoes, bread and meat. The desert was to die for, as well as the wine and coffee. I am going to miss the 3 hour meals here in france....what a great way to wind down a day and have great conversation, all while digesting great food and going home tired enough just to go to sleep.... So Bastille Day is French National Holiday. Some shops ... read more

Buongiorno ROMA! oh my ... there's just so much to write aboue Rome Im not sure where to start! What a beautiful and breathtaking city, full of history. We spent the most time there out of all the cities we've been to during our EUROPE SUMMER 06 trip and believe me.. it wasnt enough. I could have stayed in Rome for weeks and weeks. Everything about it was amazing. Of course everyone has their own views and preferences but me, Karla, I LOVED it!!!! We were very fortunate as we were able to stay at the monistery in the centre of the city. First off ... We'd like to THANK all the priests at the monistery for letting us stay there for 4 nights. A BIG THANK YOU to our tour guide and the one that ... read more

Day-2 We enjoyed a wonderful filling lunch at a cafe by the Opera House. And yes this time it was genuine French food. I even had the gaul to try fois gras. Tasty but I for me, once was enough. The next stop was shopping in the area of St. Paul's. Me of all people shopping in Paris, he he, there were sales everywhere, mainly because of Bastille day. Plus me and Amie found out there was a dress code for going into Moulin Rouge that neither of us could manage out of our backpacks. That night we lined up for crepes, a good hour or so for stale fair food. And sadly, we chose the wrong side of the Eiffel tower to watch the fireworks from. From the back end you could hear the music, ... read more

After 20 minutes in the scorching sunshine we finally managed to work out how to use the parking meter and then entered the Guggenheim Museum, an impressive structure of titanium and glass, itself a stunning piece of art. The exhibits inside are equally stimulating, some on a huge scale. Definitely worth the visit. We then sped along the coast to a campsite near Comillas. It was a very spanish famiy oriented site. The nearest beach was a short cycle ride away. The actual town of Comillas was buzzing with a local festival. Comillas features a Gaudi built house. ... read more

Wow we had one hard day... It started with an easy walk down Italian Val Ferret. At some point we saw the entire mountain side above us ruined, all the trees cut. Ron said it looked like an avalanche and then he pointed to the right and there was the avalanche - a huge pile of ice, covered with mud, scary to think what happened to everything that stood in its way! At some point we started climbing but it wasn't too hard. It’s only 800m to our first col of the day (col means a mountain pass in French). It was called Col Entre-Deux-Sauts, pass between two jumps, although we couldn't figure out why. The second pass of the day required a short descent and again climbing up, but I took it easily thinking it's ... read more

Despite all the travelling we have done over the recent years our last true summer holiday was our honeymoon in February 2003 so we were very excited at the prospect of twelve days of sun, sea, sand, swimming, seafood, wine and of course icecream! I couldn't wait to feel the warm sun on my shoulders and the salty sea on my skin, and I especially couldn't wait to put some colour back on my pasty-white-post-English-winter limbs. Croatia is constantly listed as one of the world's hottest travel destinations of the moment. And it is none more popular than with Australians, so we were not too surprised to find ourselves surrounded by our country men and women as we arrived at Gatwick airport for our journey down Europe's coast. Before we knew it we were on the ... read more
