Geneva The weather and temperature here is a God-send coming from Barcelona. The cool wind is so refreshing that alot of the time I just want to sit outside, do nothing, and just enjoy being outside for the sake of being outside. I was so crushed coming from Barcelona, though; the first day in Geneva was horrible. My body ached. My brain felt as if it were being crushed. My neck and shoulders, sore. I couldn't feel my legs anymore. Taking a cold shower just startles me from my machine-like pace now. Alcohol helps, but wears off too quickly. Time is running slower and slower. The Barcelona heat really got to my head. Geneva has this wonderful lake (appropriately named Lake Geneva) which has the cleanest water I habe ever seen in a city (except for ... read more

Well, this is my last week with Wayne Farms. It started to hit me this past week. I know I will keep many of the old friends but at the same time, it still a sad time letting go; but at the same time, it is also an exciting time of looking to the future. For those that do not know, I have accepted a new position with Elinar Broiler located in Naro-Fominsk about 80 km southwest of Moscow. It is a joint venture between USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) and a Russian owned poultry company (Elinar Broiler). To no surprise, I have "my list" of things I need to get completed before I go. Some of them I have been able to do in the evenings, while others are only during business hours ... read more

More sightseeing. The outdoor park with the sculptures of human figures depicting the circle of life, all over the park, was very interesting. One member of our group had a mishap, falling down the granite steps at one monument, and being knocked unconscious. The medical response was very good, and she is fine, but now we all joke about the fact that everyone is tripping in one way or the other, and in fact we have had a few sprained ankles and near misses. Had a delicious lunch (yesterday) -- we had two sandwiches, fries and two beers for $72. Yes, Oslo is purportedly the most expensive city in the world. But that was a delicious shrimp (reker) sandwich. Their shrimp is usually pretty plain, but some of the shrimp preparations are pretty good.... read more

Europe » Sweden » Södermanland County » Nyköping July 14th 2006

We drove with our friends Sverker and Annika from Stockholm to Nyköping (nee-shipping), a smallish town about 120 kilometers down the road. Near Nyköping they have a beautiful country cottage near the Baltic, which they have restored. Here it is so quiet that all you can hear is the wind blowing through the grass and the occasional moo of the neighboring cows. Most of the houses we have seen are what we would call barn red with white trim around the windows and doors and terra cotta tiles on the roof. These seem to be the typical Swedish design. Sometimes the houses are a golden yellow, but most are red with the white trim. The country around here seems to be sparsely populated, especially outside of the towns. As you drive you see fields of wheat, ... read more

I have started this travelblog so my family and friends can keep up with where I am and see I am safe and well and frittering away my future. After 41 years of underachieving and 10 years of longing to see Australia I finally found a way to excel at one whilst visiting the other - I have chucked my job in and am off to Ramsey Street Land! It was all very sudden. I was commuting to work when I realised that another minute stuck on a train to nowhere would kill me. When I got to work I resigned on the spot - my boss was speechless. I like to think he was heartbroken at losing such a valued employee, but it was probably more amazement at seeing me walk into the office on ... read more

I am returning to the land of the Vikings from whence my ancestors came in the deep and murky past to build big ships in Shetland and on the Wear. We are setting off tomorrow on our slow boat to the Baltic Sea setting sail at 1700hours from Newcastle North Quay. George says our ship goes at about 30 mph which being translated into nautical miles is 25 knots. No wonder it takes a week to get there! On the way we are visiting Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and spending two days in St Petersburg and then on the way back we are visiting places I have never heard of before like Gottland but shall tell you all about them as we pass through. I've got the usual butterflies and my imagination is working overtime but so ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián July 14th 2006

So we headed into Spain to San Sebastian so Chloe could feed her belly. Apparently the tapas is amazing... We should be eating some soon which is pretty exciting. Started the day with a long walk up a hill to the station which was enjoyable (my turn with the tent) then it was a pretty simple journey to get here. We found ourselves a little campsite reccomended to us by some people we met in Biarritz. Its just out of town but the journey up the hill was very pleasant...the scenery her is actually pretty stunning and with the sun shining down on it makes it even better. Set up camp... well done to Chloe for being a good little brownie and being far better at setting it up than me... we got a little over ... read more

YEs yo heard me I completely lost my virginity!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA! My Skydiving virginity. ONG Seriously the second best feeling in the world. so much fun. We were gonna bungee jump but that was only 785 feet, we got to jump out of the plane at 14 500 feet over the alps. A sight most will never see. What a adrenaline rush. I went tandem with this wicked australian divemaster named Mic Rogers. What a sik sik man. We had a free fall of 45 seconds and it was the best thing ever. We did the superman dive, we were spinning it was awesome. The best thing was the backflip out of the plane. Cannot explain how crazy it was jumping out of that plane. So we stayed at Balmers Herberage in Interlaken. what a cool hostel. ... read more

Have heard a rumor that this would make my life easier whilst travelling, removing the need for e-mails......useful when in the middle of nowhere. Being ever so technically challenged I'm starting very early to try and work it out. May need more wishes of luck to get this woking than to survive the next 5 weeks! Making progress...you can see my map if you click below: http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_1zS.html ... read more
