Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Today I headed to Oxford St for some shopping!!!! Its been so long since I have been shopping. It was a bit of a bonus, as the sales were on and the weather was perfect not hot but sunny. Bought a few pairs of shoes, a skirt, a bag and other stuff. The crowds are annoying and its so hard to walk on the footpath- its slow going. With hands full I headed back to the hostel to unpack my purchases.... read more

Ok, so i just arrived at Milan and what a journey but what a welcome by the families!!! I traveled with my fellow tutors from the camp in Venice but we had to change three trains and get to the underground metro with all our bags... terrible! But when we got to our final destination our families and camp director welcomed us sooo warmly! THe camp director gave us a pot of flowers and we got to our homes right away. I am staying with a family of four in a lovely apartment. I will be staying here for two weeks and then i will be sent off to another mysterious destination hehehe. So far this has been quite the experience, nothing negative has happened so far. I am staying with a family native from Napoli, ... read more

Hello from Madrid, by way of San Sebastian, and now we are right up the street from the Puerto Del Sol and a beautiful hostel called Adriano. I will be filling these blogs in when I can more fully describe our trip and I'm still working on getting the pics up, or at least create a link, that you can go to view the fun. The 2nd day we decided to run with the bulls turned into the longest, most soul satisying day I can remember. The day started with us getting up early enough to run with the bulls (again!) and this time we were very excited because we were going to use our knowledge of the day before to make our run better - this means get closer to the bulls and run with ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Tomsk July 14th 2006

Well folks, I've made it to Siberia. After 55 long hours, the train pulled into Tomsk railway station yesterday morning, just before the smell of 54 sweaty, sleepy travellers got the better of us. The ride was great fun - I was in the 3rd class compartment with 5 other backpackers and to be honest, we made the most of the cheap beer for sale on the platform and the plentiful noodles (although I am sick of the noodles now!). There were plenty of stops along the way so we could get out and haggle with the babushkas and we struck lucky - a lady on board asked me if I spoke English and hey presto, turned out she was Russian but now living in Canada, and helped us to buy lots of food - and ... read more

Thom - So its nearly holiday time. Only three days to go at work for me and five for Kayles. Then six weeks of pure unadulterated laziness. This is why we joined the education profession - not for the joy of helping the next generation to learn but for the holidays. We have booked all the camp sites and bought all the equipment. Our itinery sees us go to Barnsley to stay with one of my friends a week on Sunday. Our journey to the north will first see us take in a football game between the mighty Sky Blues and Notts County. We will then move on to York for two nights, then Durham for a night. We will then hopefully stay with some of Kayleigh's family for a night in Geordie land before getting ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague July 14th 2006

So after blogging yesterday, two friends and I went downstairs to one of the (yes, there is more than one) pubs in the basement of our dorm. So to answer everyone's Pivo-related (Czech language lesson for the day: pivo = beer) questions, yes, I like it, it tastes good (better than American beer, I am told), no it is not expensive (between 20-25 Kc, or about $1) and, no, I do not have an addiction/obsession. This morning was the beginning of work on our presentations. That was an...interesting...experience. We broke up into small groups of five to work on our presentations. Well some of the Czech students have internships and jobs at ad agencies, so some of them are not able to make it too all class meetings. Anyway, two of the people in my group ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh July 14th 2006

Well, It's official...I love Scotland. It is cooler here, nice enough to walk around with just a t-shirt and jeans without feeling like you're melting. There hills all around and a "mountain" just near the dorm I'm staying in. To me, and anyone else from the Appalachians, it looks more like a bump than a mountain...but it is beautiful. Yesterday, we took a 4 hour train ride and arrived in the afternoon. Then we took a literary pub tour, where we had two hilarious guides/actors showing us all the famous pubs in Edinburgh where all the writers hung out...including Robert Luis Stevenson (he is the most famous of the bunch). Then it was dinner in the Cafe Royal, a fun little pub in the new town. This morning we woke early for a good scottish breakfast ... read more

Well well... what has happened since the last update? Still in England. Still loving it. Beth and I made our daily trip to the market place and I bought a brie, tomato and chive bagette. Holy crap, it was fantastic. Beth, Neen, Olympia (fun girl from Manhatten, NY) and I went and saw Hamlet in the King's College Garden. It was fantastic! (The actor playing Hamlet was certainly easy on the eyes...) Neen brought Chiabatta bread, cheese, strawberries, fudge, and wine, and we all sat on a blanket and ate, drank, and enjoyed the show. It was incredible. A bit chilly, but really cool. Tomorrow, I get to sleep in for the first time since I got here. (Will I be able to when I have opportunity? I'm hoping I can, but I know the Gods ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich July 14th 2006

I never knew Munich was so high-class. It´s like Florence in that every high end store yuo´ve ever heard of has a store here. Like Cartier, Tiffany, Gucci (all the designers really) etc. etc. E & I feel a little tacky in our well-worn travel clothes. After 7 1/2 weeks the backpack is getting a little gamey. We´re still shopping though, though not buying much..I don´t want anything more to carry!! We had to buy an additional roll bag in Italy just to carry all the stuff we´ve accumulated. This is another city that has been extensively rebuilt after WWII, but unlike others they put it back the way it was exactly. They have NOT forgoten the war here, every church or historical structure I went into today had pictures up of what it looked like ... read more
