Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Met Jen this morning at Liverpool Street and we went to Brick Lane Market. Was average and not really our thing. So we caught the tube to Covent Garden. That was much better. We looked at the stores. Bought some fudge, earrings and matching necklace and a smoothie. Found a little cafe for lunch. Then browsed Oxford St. Used the Internet to buy a flight out of London on Wednesday and book some accommodation. Said goodbye to Jen and will catch up with her again when I return to London.... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 15th 2006

I’m back at Paris. I finally caved and called in the Marriott Calvary. (My brother, Greg, works for the Marriott and can get good family rates at times.) When we got to Biot I had a little bit of a meltdown. I was a little homesick, I realized I didn’t know where the heck I wanted to go after Wendy left, and I was sick of planning. So Paris and a week at the Marriott sounded pretty darn good. I loved Paris, and this would give me time to see more of the city and regroup to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my six weeks. THANK YOU GREG! Tour de France I’m not a big biking fan, but I did read Lance Armstrong’s book and lived with a triathlete long ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague July 15th 2006

Today was yet another exciting day of class, although slightly better than yesterday. The groups working on the Branding Presentation for the Czech Republic merged, so I was able to work with slightly more competent people. The program itself is kind of a mess--there is definitely a difference between the US education system and the CR education system. The Charles University students put together two good presentations to familiarize the American students with the Brands CR and USA. This was fine, but we all felt kind of dumb since we had nothing prepared for them. We felt that they had done all of this research on branding the US and we had done absolutely none on the CR. Anyway, when it came time to work on final presentations, the Charles University professor really just wanted us ... read more

(august 3rd and 4th 2005)well, the train ride to lagos was amazing. the first half was on a typical european train, nothing exciting. the couple that was sitting next to us seemed more like brother and sister. they argued and looked exactly alike. anyways, we had to make a connection in a very small town. it was a very warm day, but the heat was not bad at all. what bothered us was the fact that this was a precursor of the things to come. since my brother came to portugal for a couple of months, he had the worst travelling lugage one can think of. he had my huge jeep bag, that the only good thing about it is that you can roll it, his patented grey bag that he uses all the time, and ... read more

Yesterday was pretty uneventful during the day. But at night we went to the Champs-Elysées and walked around before dropping in on a friend of Garance's who was working. Then we had a drink in a café and some dessert. I forgot what it was called. But then the friend, Gaelle, dropped by and I spoke in French almost the whole time with her and Garance said later that I held my own pretty well so I was happy. For some reason my comprehension jumped yesterday...or maybe it was just that I noticed it was better. Who knows? Anyway, on the way home there were jerks throwing firecrackers onto the streets between people's legs and this guy behind us kept yelling 'attention!!' (watch out) because so many people almost stepped on them. I was ready to ... read more

Prague/ Bratislava/ Brno/ Cesky Krumlov Following the World Cup- being disappointed not only by the US but then that Argentina lost as well- I headed east to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Vienna in the final days of June and early July. Things were clearly picking up on the eastern front, the weather was great and summer tourism was getting into full blossom. Prague, my first destination, is the talk of Europe now and Vaclavske Square is filled with tourists. Pavlina had also come over from San Francisco back to her home country for a visit so it was great having a 'local guide' who spoke the native language and knew the local beer. After first crossing the Charles Bridge 7 years ago, I was excited to see how the city has changed and what all ... read more

So a quick update: We jetted out of Egypt pretty quickly after a overnight train, a plane ride, a sleep in an airport, and another plane ride we landed back in London....home of Shawn's favourite metro system.....we spent a couple days in London saw Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the London bridge but decided it was way too expensive to stay there for a month so we headed to the nearest cheapest place....AMSTERDAM!!! (not our first choice we thought we'd do Ireland....but that turned out to be way to expensive too) So here we are hanging otu in amsterdam....we've seen the van gogh museum and the heinken experience.....did alot of walking around....we are both pretty poor so we can't do too much! So were off to London tomorrow...going to a few ARt galleries when we get there ... read more

(august 4th to the 7th 2005) bus ride to sevilla from lagos. don't remember much, cause of the night before, i just passed out on the train and had a good nap. arrived into sevilla at around 6 in the afternoon at the bus station, a bit away from the hostel we chose out of our travel guide. my first thoughts of sevilla, arriving ona very dark afternoon, overcast and extremely grey, were that we should have gone to morocco instead. that soon went away. the buildings we passed by soon enchanted me to the city, and as we got on the cab--again due to the bags--i fell in love with the city. the taxi drove next to the river, by the bull ring, and through dos de mayo. in front of the cathedral he drove ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Omsk July 15th 2006

The train ride to Omsk was decent, my final full day on the train. I was in a full compartment again and I would be the first one off. It was a woman and two men this time, the men related and the the woman on her own. I was the only one with english, so it was another ride of reading and smiliing, though the lady did feed me a bit. It was some nice scenery that final day, and the weather started heating up again, so smiles on my face. When I arrived in Omsk, it was morning and very hot. I decided that I would try my luck with a cab driver as the map said 3km to the town from the train station. As soon as they knew where I was going, ... read more

Europe » Germany » Mecklenburg-Vorpommern » Schwerin July 15th 2006

Recently we haven’t been exploring much of Germany, partly due to the World Cup and people being rather slack. But this weekend we decided to get off our butts and see some beautiful part of Germany that was yet to be explored. So waking up on a beautiful sunny morning we got ready and met at the Hauptbahnhof ready for our adventures. Our destination was Schwerin, which is in the North-East of Germany. So we caught our first train to Hamburg, had a twenty five minute wait, in which we had a quick look in the shops nearby. We then caught out second train to Schwerin. We arrived there at approx. 1.30pm and set off. We followed our map to find the castle (which was unfortunately being restored, so the exterior was ruined with scaffolding). On ... read more
