Last time I wrote I was getting ready for 10 days of cycling through the borderlands of Germany and Poland. Er, that seems like a lifetime ago. Well, since then I've been there and done that, and from what I can remember, it was enjoyable (when the weather was agreeable). Really. I have a vague recollection of us being somewhere around Berlin. I know I was in Poland because I was paying with zlotys for a couple of days. I know the places I overnighted because I made a point of writing it down. The rest though is all a bit of a blur. I've been racking my brain to understand why and come up with a theory. Here goes... For the last 18 years I've done these types of bike trips on my own. Suffice ... read more

Well, we are back in Bonn after traveling on rail, bus, car, and plane. One thing about Europe, they have getting around nailed. It is raining lightly, but enjoyed such good weather over the last week's travels, that the rain presents a good time to upload some photos from the last week. ... read more

So folks, interesting week in Germany. We drove from Switzerland towards Stuttgart where Ina and Noel, friends from Uni were staying on holiday. Spent two nights at Ina's parents enjoying huge amounts of food then had to leave or we would be rolling home. Next stop Amsterdam. Noel came with us for a road trip...but we made it to Duisburg when Dan heard a rumbling noise from the front passenger tyre. He knows when something isn't right and got us off the autobarn ASAP. Unfortunatly for us it was a Saturday afternoon ad everything was shut! Hung around and explored the imediate area untill Monday where we found a Turkish Mechanic who aggreed to help us. Lucky for us it is Ramadan at the moment and part of the religion is that you dont refuse anyone ... read more

Hello All, Well, we wanted to "live like the natives" and while I guess that without going to work, etc. , that may be hard to do, we are jumping in with both feet. But, some differences between the US and Germany are hard to miss: 1) There seems to be more smoking at least we are more aware of it because there is no prohibition to it in many restaurants outdoor areas 2) The public transportation is much more advanced here and the Germans have invested in infrastructure to support it. We are envious. 3) Everyone seems to be more energy conscience and recycle is not a dirty word. In fact, everyone seems to recycle and separation of trash is implemented everywhere, even commercial/public areas. 4) Many people speak English but not speaking German is ... read more

Yesterday was our first day alone in Bonn. Margie and her fantastic translation skills got on a train to the airport and then on to America along with her Daughter Janina, grandsons in tow. So, we decided to try our driving skills with a short trip to Central Bonn. (We had ridden the bikes along the Rhine the day before, but learned that most shops are closed on Sunday in Germany) Did anyone tell us that the central part is pedestrian only? Yes, but it came into full understanding while trying to find a parking space.... We ended up having a great time, but are going back today on the 610/611 bus in the future. The fare is less than the cost of parking we find and after a visit to the tourist information office, we ... read more

After a quick trip to Los Angeles on SW, we took a bus to the internatonal Bradley terminal that would be our home for the next 10 hours while we tried to get a flight to Frankfurt, Germany. We were banking on Lufthansa for a ZED fare and after more and more passengers arrived at the gate, we realized there would be no chance on the first nonstop. Then, we got the two last seats on the 747 flight 451, at 7 pm. Have I mentioned that I hate the bulkhead? (note to self: bring a keyboard with English on it the next time I travel to Germany and have to use my sister's computer. Like where the heck is the @ key?) Well, anyway, after an agonizing night we arrived in Frankfurt. The DB ICE ... read more

A BIG thank you to all those that prayed and wished for a temper-tantrum free bus trip from Riga to Klaipeda. All went well, and smoothly, although admittedly there was some trepidation. When I arrived at the bus station there were already 3 bicyles there... What's my plan B? Oh, that's right, I don't have a Plan B. And because I did not have a Plan B I was beginning to think that not only would I have to convince the bus driver to take my bicycle, but that I would also have to convince the other bike riders that I deserved to be on the bus too. I'm so glad I didn't need to grovel. I really don't like grovelling. I think it doesn't become me. As luck would have it, the fellow cyclists were ... read more

Is cool. Very cool. Don't know why I didn't start earlier because I'm loving this. More than a week since that last entry and yet it feels like way longer, I've done so much and met so many people. Spent a few more days in Amsterdam with Salim, first night in quite a nice hotel but with a grumpy man. After a lot of free breakfast we set out to find a cheaper place and ended up for the next few nights at Aivengo Hostel, tucked away just near Centraal station. Only 18€ (yes, the sign comes after the number, weird I know) and with free internet. Met a few cool people, wandered around the city doing touristy things, getting lots in the identical little streets with canals and bridges and spending all our money on ... read more
