After months of anticipation, we are finally leaving on a our 3 week journey to Europe! The world headquarters for cleverbridge ( - the company I work for) is located in Cologne, Germany and I'm lucky enough to go there once a year around this time on business. This year Meagan is joining me and we decided to tack on a short vacation to Italy at the end since we'll be so close. This is Meagan's first trip outside the US and she'll be getting her first stamp in her brand new passport when we head through customs in the Frankfurt airport. Packing was a bit difficult since the weather in Germany will still be pretty chilly but it will start to warm up when we get to Italy. Always a struggle not to bring too ... read more

Havent done much since i last wrote on this. On Saturday went to Carinas grandparents house for her grandads birthday. For the 10 of us they had 4 homemade cakes that were so good. Her family were pretty similar to ours, relaxed and nice. Yesterday I went to where I will be working. Met the guy i will be working with. His german is nt too good but Carina said i will be able to understand him easier because he will make the same mistakes i will when talking german which shouldnt be too bad. Once my german is good enough i might end up learning some polish off of him. He said that the language barrier wouldnt matter too much because he learnt the same like me and will use his body and hands to ... read more

***www.thetattooedtraveler.com*** So, your first question may be: Why go to Düsseldorf? And that may be followed with: Why in February? The answer, my friends, is simple: Money. I have a friend who lives there, so I had a free place to stay and airfare is cheaper in February because who in their right mind would vacation in Germany in the middle of winter? All that being said, Düsseldorf was hopping! It was Carnival, which precedes Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season, so it was just one big party! The city of Cologne, 30 minutes away and Düsseldorf’s big rival, also does Carnival— it’s a point of contention as to who does it better. Since I didn’t visit Cologne, I have no basis to judge, but I can say that Düsseldorf gets pretty crazy with the costumes ... read more

... read more

:( Aconteceram várias ... read more

Sorry. Not only have I been really busy but I managed to lose the last post. So, I'll try again. I broke off in mid sentence on the freezing platform of the station at Frankfurt Airport, waiting for trains that never came, However, eventually one came and i made it to Cologne, where, on the advice of my brother Chris, I had booked into the Ibis hotel at the station. He wasn't joking. I was accessed through a door in the station right next to the ticket vending machine! With only two hours to go before the opera started at 6pm I needed to eat. Almost everything was closed except a super posh 5+ star hotel near the Dom. Asked the bounce guy where I could have lunch at 4pm. He directed me to the piano ... read more

Everyone knows that public transport in Germany is the definition of perfection itself. Despite a comment in my first blog, trains are very rarely late in this part of the world (unless they are trains to my climbing gym - could this be a sign?). But my favourite part of the Deutsche Bahn are the so called Landestickets - tickets that allow you unlimited travel within one of the German federal states for 24 hours. These are often the cheapest way to travel, as long as you are travelling within the borders of the state - a rule that made me slightly regret being based in Nordrhein-Westfalen at first, a state with neither the most beautiful cities, nor the cheapest Landestickets. Unlike all other German states, where such a ticket costs 20 Euros for a single ... read more

Or "All I Want for Christmas is Warmth" It's 10 o'clock in the evening and I hurry back home, walking just fast enough to avoid skidding on the slushy snow under my feet. It's an early finish today - the market is empty, the wet white clumps falling from the sky having scared off even the biggest mulled wine and sausage enthusiasts. The whole city is getting ready for sleep under a thick snowy blanket. It's highly amusing to see rows upon rows of bikes in a city as cyclist-oriented as Oxford covered with a think white layer. Amusing purely because I don't have a bike here, so I can giggle as I imagine the suprise or indignation on their owners faces in the morning, safe in the knowledge that the God of bikes can't get ... read more
