It's so hot here today, I think it's over 40 degrees in the sun - I guess that's what you get when the average year round temperature is 35 degrees and you come at the beginning of the hot season. I can't believe I'm going to London tonight, this week has gone so fast. I've seen and done so much and can't wait to come back and travel around the rest of Thailand - maybe on the way home. Wandered along Khao San last night after having dinner. Everything's being set up ready for their New Year festival next week, so there's lots going on. There was some alcohol promotion going on, with a break dancing competition on the middle of the road. I think that the Thai 'punks' hang around outside buddy lodge, as it ... read more

I'm not sure where I left off in my last entry so I'll pick up from last night. Last night we decided to go out drinking. On Khao San Rd they have these awesome little cocktail bars on the side of the road, and then lots of little tiny plastic chairs in the middle of the road for you to sit on. Anyways, I ended up having two shots there and then tried one of their 'buckets', which is whiskey, red bull, and coke, all in a bucket with a few straws. Eitherway though, the bucket was gross, I didn't enjoy it at all and didn't finish it, but the whole sidewalk cocktail bar is cool. We met some crazy english people, and this guy named Ash who claimed to be a reverend performed an impromtu ... read more

Went to Chatuchak markets - the weekend markets - today, they are HUGE! There's something like over 15 000 stalls, selling anything and everything from clothes, cds, jewellery, lacquerware, wood carvings, painings, food, animals, plants, you name it they've probably got it. I walked for about 45 minutes away from Khao San to get a taxi that would actually use his meter, and so it only cost me like 75B to get there. I spent the whole day at the markets pretty much, from 9.30 until 4.30pm. I bought a few tops, but not as much as I would have liked to but I don't really have any room for anything in my pack. Caught a taxi back and had an early dinner at the restaurant here, then went wandering down Khao San. The streets are ... read more

Well we ended up not seeing a Muay Thai boxing match last night. We took a tuk tuk to the stadium in rush hour traffic, which was horribly boring and hot, and then found out that the worst seats were 500 bhat, and since we're cheap we opted to just skip the fights. Plus, none of us were really in the mood for sitting for 4 hours. Next door to the stadium was a night bazaar, so we wandered around there for an hour or so. It seemed geared towards more high class tourists, but it was fun to look at all the crazy furniture that could be bought, as well as some of the abstract art on display. We then wandered around looking for a tuk tuk to take us back to Khao San, since ... read more

Not too much has happened since my last blog entry, but since I'm at an internet cafe I may as well update. Emily showed up at 12:30 last night and we all crashed until about 7:30. So we got up and went for breakfast. I had some Phad Thai and I hated it, I still managed to eat a lot of it though. I just didn't like the peanuty taste it had. The tofu and sprout part of it was edible though. I also had a fried rice version of it, instead of noodles, so maybe that had something to do with it. Who knows, I doubt I'll try it again. After breakfast we meandered around the streets for ahwile. It felt good just to walk around, and get away from the hustle and bustle of ... read more

Went out to the floating markets this morning. It was really cool to go to, though it's mostly tourists now and not very authentic unless you get there at 6am apparently. It was good to get away from the city and see something different. We went on a ride on a long tail boat to the markets, and then went on a paddle boat thing at the markets. I met 2 Norweigan girls who've been travelling around India for the last 2 1/2 months, and are heading to southern Thailand tomorrow. There was also a German couple on the trip, and a guy from Essex who is travelling around Thailand before going to Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and California. This afternoon I caught a tuk-tuk to Pratunum, the Indian district. There's hardly and tourists out there ... read more

Well I'm here at long last. Bangkok. The flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong was a long, boring flight. The upside was that Cathay Pacific seems to be a really good carrier. There were already pillows and blankets for us when we got to our seats, and even in Economy class we all had our own television screen and could choose what movies to watch. So that was nice, but all in all I probably only got 4 hours of sleep. We were also a little late getting to Hong Kong so we really had to rush to the next gate. After we got to Bangkok International Airport and went through immigration and customs we got a taxi to Khao San Rd. The infamous backpacker ghetto. The taxi ride was pretty fun. The style of driving ... read more

Wandered through Banglamphu markets yesterday, which was interesting. It'a a lot like Bali here, but a bit more laid back than Kuta. Had 'pud' thai for lunch/dinner from a street vendor (their translations can be interesting) for 15B, and then had a great pineapple shake - which is basically just pineapple and ice blended together. Ended up going to bed early again as I was so tired from walking around everywhere. Had an interesting shower this morning, trying not to soak the whole bathroom. Bought a pineapple shake on the street for breakfast from a different vendor, and this one came in a bag. They blend it up and pour it into a little shopping bag and give you a straw, so you can carry it around the streets with you while you drink it. Bought ... read more

Spent most of yesterday wandering around Thanon Khao San and Soi Rambutri. Didn't find anywhere to stay that took reservations, so I'd have too spend the morning looking. Had dinner on the street, bought 3 chicken 'steaks' - ie sticks/kebabs for 15B off a street cart that were great. Ended up having dinner at a street stall called Pan Thai, green chicken curry and a Singah beer for 55B. Was so tired by 7.30 that I went to bed (think I'm still adjusting to the time difference), but was woken up by some music playing downstairs at 9.30. Ended up sleeping in till 8, then had eggs, bacon, toast and tea for breakfast at the hotel. Wandered away from Khao San into West Banglamphu to find somewhere quiet to stay. The range of accomodation is very ... read more

Got here safe and sound. Flight was delayed for like 2 hours, so didn't end up leaving Sydney til 7pm, instead of 4.50. Got a window seat up the back of the plane, not that there was anything to see. It was good though cause I was in 70A, and there were only 75 rows, and the plane is narrower up the back from where I was so instead of 3 seats on the side there were only 2 so I had a gap of about a foot between me and the window and it didn't feel too claustrophobic. I was sitting next to a quiet Thai lady who has been living in Australia for 6 years, and is coming to Thailand for New Year - which is I think the 13th and 14th of April. ... read more
