3rd April 2005 Bangkok, Thailand. Well, I've mentioned before that the motorcyclists here are crazy, and there's so very many of them! Soooo having tried my hand at the tuk-tuk experience and enjoying it, I decided to risk life and limb on the back of a bike. And as with the tuk-tuks, I loved it! I ended up on one of the slimmer bikes, unfortunately, and there were a few moments going over bumps and such that I was convinced I was about to go flying off the back of it, but nup! My bikey-dude (much more exotic than 'driver') was a very good driver, as many of these Thais seem to be, and we ducked and weaved through traffic at terrifying speeds, and on the main motorways I'd glance over his shoulder and we'd be ... read more

**Note: I have arrived back in NZ safely but due to not being able to access my blog in Thailand I have to do it now...** The following diary entries are from my journal that I wrote while there...I shall do it by cities etc ------------------------------------------------------------------- April 2 I can't believe I am in Bangkok and I still cannot believe I am doing this...travelling Thailand alone. I admit, I am somewhat nervous but other people have done it alone so why can't I? I couldn't believe how humid and hot it was when I got off the plane but I love it. And I am so glad I arranged transportation before arriving here to get to the hotel. Any way, I am going to bed and tomorrow the journey begins... -------------------------------------- April 3 Well, I had ... read more

2nd April 2005 Bangkok, Thailand. Well I sorted out the glasses and all, am being ripped off but not in the mood to care. I went on my first tuk-tuk ride last night and it was freakin' brilliant!! I want to buy one and take it home! My driver, a fairly young guy, was absolutely maniacal, swerving in and out of traffic like we were on a motorbike, and overtaking almost all the other traffic on the freeways! It was a total thrill and I absolutely loved it. Mind you, he did try to rip me off, but hey, you gotta eat, right? The way to get around it is to first take a metered taxi to your destniation and remember the fare. Then, later, you hail a tuk-tuk and know the right price to bargain ... read more

We got into Bangkok late last evening. I took a stroll around the hotel and saw some of the things Bangkok/Thailand seems to be known for - transvestite prostitutes, street vendors selling deepfried cockroaches/ants/various bugs, more prostitutes/escort girls and the western men using these female services. We headed out this morning and checked out the National Museum and learnt a bit about Thai history having known nothing beforehand. From there we headed down the road to see the Golden Palace and the Emerald Buddha. Later on by chance, a thai man introduced himself and told us about a government factory outlet gem store which specialized in rubies and sapphires. India is supposed to be pretty good as well but you might end up getting glass if you don't know your gems! I think we're going to ... read more

1st April 2005 Bangkok, Thailand. Well, all amazingly good things must come to an end. I had to run back to Bangkok to try and get the prescription glasses, which I'd forgotten about, made. Koh Chang was absolutely brilliant. I spent the day after my last journal hanging out in the sun (now regretting that, my legs and face are very scary) and updating journal and then off to the sauna after 4pm. I hadn't really thought that through, and when I got there was walked through the treatment etc and prices, and was a little weirded out by the idea of sitting in a room full of steam - being hot isn't exactly a problem here in Thailand, no assistance is needed. But anyway I was there, so spent the rest of the day wandering ... read more

I arrived in Bangkok two nights ago at 1am....with all intentions of going right to bed and getting an early start the next day. But the thing is that when you pull into Bangkok (specifically KoahSan Road sp?) you get sucked into the energy, the lights, the madness (but not the lady boys). Bangkok has tons and tons of energy...I am really having a good time here, much better then I thought. Everyone had warned me that Bangkok is just another big messy Asian city...but I have a totally different picture. So while I was on the 10 hour boat/bus ride from Koh Tao to Bangkok I met and English blok named Chris. He was a Bangkok pro and so I kind of buddied up with him. We ended up getting a room together and then ... read more

One of the most humourous things about living in a country where English is not their first language is the many occasions on which they mangle English. Signs like "Please keep clean. Litter will be offended" can keep me giggling for hours, but, without a doubt, the most fruitful source of laughs here in Thailand (in this regard) is t-shirts. Following is a collection of t-shirt slogans. This shall be updated as necessary. - Dance crazy, till a meal gets - If pigs could fly, I'd be a flying pig-fucker - Define normal. You're despicable. Crazy is more fun that worried. - No one take care me (with a picture of a sheep or pig - hard to tell - with a white body and pink head) - Sexy welcomes girl by snatch - I like ... read more

Well, my time in South East Asia is coming to an end. I can't believe that I've been away from home for three months already and that I'll be standing in front of the Taj Mahal in a few short days. Unreal! Bye South East Asia. Three months. Four countries I've seen. India beckons! Yesterday was the last day of my three week tour through Cambodia and Laos (yup, still working on updating the blog...I'm working on it!) The tour finished up in Bangkok. We arrived via an overnight train and eventually made it back to our hotel around 8:30 in the morning. After settling in we met up with our local tour guide to check out Wat Pho. I actually went there on my first day in Bangkok five weeks ago but decided to go ... read more

March 25th 2005 Bangkok, Thailand. Well, still here. I thought I'd be on my way to Pattaya by now but got the bus times mixed up - that's okay, though, I hadn't actually bought one anyway. So now am staying at the Rainbow Guest House, just off Khao San Rd, and it seems okay though the bed is only a little softer than the floor - literally. I went down to ask if that was the bed or if it was a base and the mattress was coming up later...apparently not. I only spent two minutes in there but it seems bigger than the last, and only 200baht, that's less than $8AU. Have been wandering and wandering and wandering some more. I talked to some people, they said Pattaya is crap, just old dudes and prossies, ... read more
