Day 1 - 2½ in Bangkok Bangkok We arrived in Bangkok, flying with Air Asia, a low cost no frills (read: no food or drink either) airline. The tickets were €35.00 per person including all taxes. Soon as we exited the customs into the arrival lounge, we were greeted by the usual polite smiles, "you want taxi?" From experience, Zak knew that these rides would cost anywhere from 20 to €40.00. So we just stepped outside to the street right at the corner of the airport lounge, and asked for an air-con bus which cost €2.00 each, and which brought us directly to the infamous Khao Sarn Rd district. (You can also catch a metered taxi, which if shared between several people comes to a low price. They charge you toll for using the flyovers) To ... read more

Sal and Mick set out on their world travels from Sydney Airport on the 18th of April, 2005. Sal was a little liberal in her inbibing of sleeping tablets and had to be assisted by Mick through the terminal building in a somewhat groggy and woozy state. Sal lost her battle to keep the sleep monsters at bay only the briefest moment after sitting down. Never one to miss an opportunity, Mick recorded Sal's slumber for posterity. Arrival in Bangkok and subsequent exiting of the terminal building was like getting a nasty backhander across the head - it was 11 o'clock at night and the temperature was about 32 degrees, humidity about 743%!! Gill Presland, an old friend of Sal's (that is not saying that Gill is old, but that her and Sal have been friends ... read more

Stormy, stormy day Waiting in Bangkok Airport Not much to do here. Well, my plans to spend the day in Bangkok during my 12 hour layover have been foiled by the rain. There currently is a massive thunder and lightening storm happening out there. I figured why bother getting a transit visa and tour Bangkok when I'm just gonna get soaked. So as I type it is from the Bangkok airport. How exciting. lol I have been able to kill the last 6 hours or so by almost finishing my book. I tried to snooze a bit but it is a little difficult with those darn armrests getting in the way. Then I wandered the shops for a while but didn’t want to do that for too long for fear the salespeople would think I was ... read more

Hallo , hallo....

Dave and I flew into Bangkok smack dab in the middle of the famous "Water Festival". This is Buddhist Asia's New Year celebration and entails bands of youth throwing buckets of water on everyone. The water is said to cleanse the people and the city during the hottest time of year and no one is excluded! As Dave and I learned our first night when we headed out to explore the city. It's unbelievable to witness. You can't go outside without getting soaking wet! Pick-up trucks drive by with thirty people packed in the back holding buckets of water that they hurl at unsuspecting pedestrians. We entered a touristy street and were virtually assaulted by teenagers who laughingly approach and dump buckets of water over your head. It is a very joyous holiday where everyone smiles ... read more
