After getting ready this morning, I headed to the bus station and got on the bus to the Cameron Highlands - a region developed by the British for tea plantations and also as an escape from the tropical heat. The loading of the bus provided for an interesting experience. About 15 minutes before departing, the storage compartments were opened and I, along with a Brit, tossed my backpack in and made toward boarding the bus. However, before we made it, the bus driver intercepted us and grabbed the Brit and told him he had to reload his bag - in Chinese. The Brit politely shuffled his backpack a bit, unfortunately not to the satisfactory of the driver, prompting him to repeat his command, with twice the volume for good measure - still in Chinese. The bewildered ... read more

Well, waking up this morning, I realized I was quite sore from yesterday's race. Swinging out of bed elicited a groan as I hobbled to the shower. However, as I got going everything loosened up and now, while a bit stiff, am feeling much better. Today I did some pretty vanilla sightseeing in KL, including some museums and parks. I did thoroughly enjoy the National Mosque, it was very open, with a nice breeze blowing through. Furthermore, it was all white marble, with a fountain in the middle, so very relaxing. Unfortunately, the one museum I really wanted to see, the Islamic Arts Museum, was closed and as I leave tomorrow I will have to pass on it. However, I am still a bit awestruck on walking in KL. There doesn't seem to be any real ... read more

In Singapore I caught the bus to Kuala Lumpur without event and even arrived at the bus station I was guessing I would be dropped off at. However, adventures began as soon as I made it to KL. Locating my hostel turned out to be an epic quest, replete with a number wrong turns, inaccurate maps, unlabeled streets, last minute research in not one but two internet cafes and a partridge in a pear tree. Though I am not known for innate navigational talents, I can say that Kuala Lumpur is worse than most towns in this regard. Eventually, my means of blazing my path bore an eery resemblence to my approach to math, namely utilizing the guess and check method. In my defense, look at a map of this city, and you will notice two ... read more

It's our last day in Malaysia today and I've had a really good time here. Lots of people told us that the country was dirty and not that great but I really like it. Not really sure what I expected but it's competely different to what I imagined, its really green and quite cosmopolitan. We've been staying in Chinatown which is quite hectic and busy (but then again, I think after India no where will seem quite so busy again!) It's where most of the backpackers stay and is really close to everything. We're staying in a place called Wheelers Guesthouse which was recommended to us by someone we met in the Cameron Highlands. Its not the poshest of places but the people there are really helpful and friendly and there's loads of backpackers there. Plus ... read more

We didn't have many expectations of Malaysia, esp KL as it has been described in previous blogs as a rather dirty and hot city. But we were pleasantly surprised, the streets were clean (compared to Mumbai), it was really hot and humid, but there were numerous shopping centres and public transport was great and cheap! Fortunately for us we were staying in Chinatown, near Petaling Street which was an excellent location, bus and metro routes close by and a hostel who has really helpful members of staff (Wheelers). I couldn't shop as much as I wanted to as I really can't carry anything else- also we were going overland to Singapore so I didn't really want to go through there with all of my shopping bags! Guess what.... We found a M & S, I was ... read more

MALAYSIA So we have been in Malaysia for just over two weeks and we must say it has been a land of contrast. From the most amazing paradise islands and beaches to the most amazing smells of sewers and car fume. From the sights of golden sand, to the sights of cockroaches and rats!! We started in Melaka which was a lovely little town that looked a little bit like a town in 50's America. It was very well kept and horribly touristy but it was definitely a relief from the hustle and bustle of two major cities in a row. After Melaka we headed off to Cherating on the east coast of Malaysia. It was a bit of a trek as it took seven hours on the bus (even though we were told that it ... read more

Hello all! Well our fist day was pretty hectic! After a long flight, (and not succesfully joing the mile high club!!) we arrived in KL airport at 3.30am, caught the KLIA express train to the city (28mins) to dicsover the heavens had opened up and it was pouring cats and dogs! We were in our room by 6.00am, which we think is actually pretty good time! After a quick nanna nap and breaky we ventured out into the unknown! low and behold by the time we got outside we needed another change of clothes! We never imagined two people could sweat so much!! The place we stayed was pretty good, basic but clean and had a really cute rooftop garden, where we took the photo of our new little friends (you will be seeing alot of ... read more

Yet another exciting installmet for you folks. Well.Ive spent the last 48 hrs or so in KL. To be honest im not really that impressed. 1-its bloody hot!!!Sooooooo humid-if you walk for more than 5 minutes you are just pouring with sweat. 2-To avoid the above you have to use taxis-Not one driver will switch the meter on so after the 1st day of saying f*#k off , im not paying that i finally got round to using the metro system although it is quite limited. Anyway, enough moaning, at least im not in England!! Spent Sunday night with the parents in The Ritz Carlton-very swish, i couldve probably stayed there if i cut my trip short by 2 weeks! Monday, again with the parents was spent going up the huge Menara Tower, which gives 360 ... read more

Hello all, well i finally got off my backside and did some serious travelling for the first time in a week or so!! Due to a very long lie in in my little beach bungalow at Lamaii on Koh Samui on Friday i decided it best to make a move on Saturday!! Spent Friday on a moped ( again ) and did a bit of sightseeing-went to see the Big Buddha-its big and its a buddha. Then did a bit of clothes shopping in Chaweng as the Thai laundry ladies seem to love putting big holes in all my t-shirts.Even went to get a haircut-grade 2 all over ( sorry mum ). Left by ferry from Koh Samui Saturday morning and arrived in a crappy little village called Donsak on the mainland about 2 hrs later. ... read more

We stood in the lobby of our luxurious hotel in Kuala Lumpur waiting to be picked up for the trip to take in the sights of K.L. After a brief stopover on a beautiful tropical island and 10 days exploring a tiny corner of Australia, it was now time to whiz around the city. We had arrived early in the morning, too early to check into our room, so, after 9 hours of flying and one and a half hours coach travel, we found ourselves waiting to squeeze onto a minibus full of other like minded travellers. The tour began by driving us past all the Foreign Embassies, given the political climate at the moment I was glad when that bit was over. The promised rubber plantation turned out to be a solitary rubber tree at ... read more
