Taking the bus to Maylasia consisted of many hot sweaty hours, sitting and looking out the window and a few intense border crossings. I of course slept in Grants bag the entire time. We went through Maylasia pretty quick stopping in Kuala Lumper to do a bit of shopping and site seeing... read more

Hello again Got to Kuala Lumpa after a 6 hour train journey which to be fair wasn't too bad. Apart from confusion and an embarrassing moment at the Malaysian customs which ended up with me being the only person on the train, waiving at all the locals in the heat from my air conned carriage, they didn't seem to see the funny side!! THe toilet on the train was really cool! It was basically a loo seat with a flume running off it and so all the waste jsut got thrown onto the track! Which were in the last carriage and sometimes it felt like the train was going to come of the tracks! THe carriage would suddenluy jerk forward like it was playing catch up and then would vear scarily to the left or the ... read more

Week Four: Sep 26th - Oct 2nd I'm so embarrassed that it's been almost two months since we have updated the blog! We are still here and doing well, I promise. The week started out with a shopping trip to Gurney plaza (where most of the expats shop). I meet my friend Carla for lunch and we shopped around a bit. I found a great pair of shoes (black, of course) but they didn’t have my size. Big surprise! 10’s aren’t too common here. My main reason for going there was to grocery shop at Cold Storage. Since it is close to the expats it stocks a lot more imported food. Yay! I found tortillas, salsa, beans, mac’n’cheese, good, real cheddar cheese, chips and some other “American” food. Yes, most of it was junk, but it’s ... read more

Our last 2 hours in India were spent working our way through the congested, exhaust filled streets of Mumbai (Bombay), weaving between people, cars and rickshaws. As we moved out of the core of the city we entered the slums which seemed to stretch out in all directions except up; no structure was taller than over 6 feet. Reportedly, 5000 new people arrive to the slums of Mumbai each week, most of them internal refugees driven from their villages by various catastrophes and general poverty. Hundreds of thousands of people live together in shelters pieced together out of reclaimed tarps, rags and plastic in what are the largest slums in Asia. Groups of smiling barefoot children rushed to our cab at every corner, singing and laughing and hoping for rupees, and then latching on and chasing ... read more

Well we have made it to Kuala Lumpur (affectionately called KL). This is our first stop on the SE Asia leg of our trip. We arrived into KL quite late and after going through immigration and the most stringent customs (note sarcasm) we have ever seen. Actually it was non-existant. A taxi into town cost us 67.00RM ($22.00 CAD approx) and was quite the thrill ride. The highway was so modern I thought we had landed back in Australia, but the driver was definitely from Asia. There were 3 lanes, each way, and he used at least 2 of them at all times while going 140 km/h. Arriving into KL city at 11pm without a hostel reservation was a little scary, but we had a guesthouse in mind....only one problem- where is #5??? When we arrived ... read more

Hi all We’ve been in Kuala Lumpur (KL) for about 1 week now, and under normal circumstances that’d probably be a couple of days too long. However, we had a few matters to sort out which took longer than we thought (rescheduling flights to Aus was one thing) and given that we had found an excellent 5 star hotel for only 25 pounds a night - and the weather was behaving itself - we agreed to hang around here and do what we needed to do in this relaxed environment. We are also right across the road from a shopping centre which has a Delifrance with free Wifi connection - ideal given our latest gadgetry purchase of a new laptop. Well, you know how it is when your husband is a tech head - it would ... read more

We were collected at 8.45am & Luke was dropped off in Bangsar at Mei & Francis' flat whilst I was whisked to the Wong household. When I arrived, Bee bee was completing the final touches to Mei's hair. She looked radiant in a superb traditional white wedding dress & intricate jacket hand-tailored by Tracey (who has created all the family dresses I am told!). Meanwhile Francis & the boys arrived. I was told by William that tradition holds that the girls are supposed to test the groom-to-be's love with various trials (e.g. eating something horrible/wearing a Man Utd. shirt/etc) but I wasn't informed of this until late the night before under specific instruction that this was not required today! Anyway, there was a lot of bowing & clapping before Francis took Mei home to the flat ... read more

Kamaman Oct. 14 - 21 Kuala Lumpur Oct. 21 - 25 We spent the week relaxing in one of Malaysia nicest beach and golf resorts. Our good friends Clela and Dan travelled 40 gruelling hours straight from Bangkok to join us but we're well rewarded by with air conditioning, hot water, comfortable beds not to mention the often deserted beach, huge pool and wonderful hot tubs where much time was spent. They have now returned to the busy life to begin new one year teaching contracts but we will see them in a few weeks up in their neck of the woods where they have promised us cheap massages, loads of seafood and great shopping. After the easy resort life, we headed to the big city of Kuala Lumpur. It is much like Singapore - ... read more
