Woke up late again & got picked up to go for Dim sum - after all it was Sunday lunchtime. After delicious grub we got dropped off in Chinatown where we visited an Indian & Chinese temple. In the central market we picked up various fake designer goods after being told they were the latest fashion & that the green we were wearing was the old green & we needed the new.... read more

Having watched "Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban" until 2 am, we got up late & made our way to Pudaraya bus station. The station was a collection of food stalls & a mass of tiny ticket booths all, confusingly, selling bus tickets. We were helped to decipher which one we needed by a man with a walkie-talkie. Tickets to the Cameron Highlands were readily available, but all buses to Penang were fully booked as the forthcoming weekend celebrated both Divali & Id making Penang the place to be (but unfortunately not for us). We got to the Westin Hotel at 3 pm for the wedding banquet rehearsal, after travelling up & down in what must be the fastest lift in the world (my ears popped every time) we found Mei Leng & Francis (beaming) ... read more

The bus arrived in KL at 1 am & we were lucky to spot our hotel from the road. There was a king size bed in the room which was very welcome after six weeks in a tent. In the morning we headed into town but found that all the tickets for the Petronas Towers Skybridge had already been given out but we later learned that the same view of KL can be seen from the top of the Mandarin Oriental hotel, you just have to walk in as if you are staying there & take the lift up. After exploring the many shopping malls (mainly because they were air conditioned & were a welcome relief from the humidity outside) we went out for a meal with Mei Leng, her family & friends to Madam Kwans, ... read more

Dear Friends, Family and Fellow travellers… Hey, it’s Anna here - hope you are all doing great. For those of you in the UK, I hope that Autumn is treating you well - with crisp mornings, games of conkers, the wind whistling through the trees and all things lovely that I can remember from the annual ‘Autumn’ poems that I wrote in Primary School. Perhaps not? If recent weather patterns are anything to go by, you’re probably enjoying the wild heat of an Indian summer. If so, too bad. You don’t have air con. We do. So, at the last time of writing we’d just left New Zealand. We’re now in Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur to be exact! It’s been a little over 3 months since we kissed our mothers goodbye so I’m sure you’ve all ... read more

Today we went of the Kualu Lumpur Explorer Tour. A very interesting tour which incorporated the Batu Caves, the Royal Selangor Pewter factory, a Batik Factory and a viewing of a rubber tree. The Batu Caves are huge. They are used as a Hindu Temple and are able to hold appox 1.4 million people for religious celebrations. After walking a large set of stairs we were able to walk through the cave and view various religious motifs. Monkeys were everywhere. The Royal Selangor Pewter factory - both the worlds largest pewter factory and home to the worlds largest pewter tankard, was an enjoyable visit. The company hand makes tonnes of pewter products and seems to treat its staff well. There are walls of hands - a worker is able to get there hand print on the ... read more

We arrived in Malaysia today at 5.30am, after a 6 hour flight. The drive into Kuala Lumpur took us over 2 hours. The traffic was crazy!! With hundreds of scooters that weave and dodge through the peak hour traffic (where no one lets you know what they are doing!) We felt lucky to arrive at our hotel The Royal Bintang unscathed. Once we had checked in and checked out the local food we went on a City tour of Kuala Lumpur - visting a Hindu Temple, Chinese Temple, China Town, the Central Markets (were we could have filled 3 more suitcases with cheap goodies), then for a bit of history we stopped at Independence Square and admired some of the Architecture. ... read more

Started off the day with the Petronas Towers (tallest in the world) got there early and bought a ticket for 11.15 so we had time to look around the KLCC shopping centre which is at the base of the towers. It was so westernised but very high class examples of te shops are Prada, Gucci and Armani. They are cheeper but still out of our price range! Had brunch in a little French ( I know were in Malaysia) Bistro which was more expensive than we have been paying. We got back for the tour were we were shown a video of how the towers were made, the construction was amazing. Our tour guide then took us up to the viewing deck which isnt even half way up the 81 storey building, the views spanned for ... read more

23.00 Went to China Town tonight walked down the famous Petaling Street which is full of market stalls selling watches, bags, wallets and fake trainers (toot basically) Nat managed to get quite a cool wallet though. There were a few beggers with missing limbs asking for help which is quite hard to see. We had dinner at another hawker stall, we tried clay pot chicken which was yummy!!. Thanks for your messages the weather is great really humid and sticky but bearable and the accomodation is perfect clean and very friendly.... read more
