16th Feb Today we get up early to make it to the Batu Caves. We got held up as the banks were a nightmare for Karen to change some of her money. We weren't really going to argue though as the security guard was walking around with a shot gun!! We then couldn't find our bus but ended up getting on one that went all through town before going to the Caves. It was only morning yet i was sweating like nothing else! The caves from the outside were huge with a giant staircase to get to the top. There were food stalls and market stalls everywhere, and also quite a bit of rubbish. We headed up the stairs (where i powered it up leaving the Karen's behind). The view of KL from the top was ... read more

We arrived safely in Kuala Lumpur after a 7 hour train journey. By the end of the train trip we had something i call "greenarihia"! This is when you see so much green that your eyes cannot take anymore, in this case it was the vast jungle that seemed to never end when we were traveling through Malaysia. Malaysia seems like a poor place compared to Singapore, the obvious signs being that there were lots of rubbish dumps and shanty towns to be seen. On getting to Kuala Lumpur we arrived at our 9 pound a night hostel that we booked for the following 4 day's. It is very basic but very comfortable. The name of the hostel is the Green Hut Lodge; if you get to visit Kuala Lumpur i would certainly recommend this place. ... read more

Despite illness we enjoyed our couple of Days in Kuala Lumpar. It is a clean sterile place that has lots to offer even if it does lack a little excitement and soul. The night market in China Town is the best place to get a bargain, whilst their are some massive shopping walls if you have a bigger budget. The transport system is excellent and it is easy to get around especially on the Light Railway. ... read more

My experience with the Hindu religious festival began the night before I went to the Batu Caves. My new Danish friend and I were walking through the rain in Kuala Lumpur, discussing how much both our countries are hated by most of the world at this point in time when we noticed that a large number of Hindu people walking in the same direction as if they were caught up in the tide of a stream. Naturally, at 1am with nothing much to do but wander, we followed the stream and found a river of Hindus on a Pilgrimage of sorts, headed towards the Batu Caves. The only concrete facts I received about this festival is that Hindus from all around Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia head towards the Batu Caves during this time of year to ... read more

K.L., the capital of Malaysia, is an ethnically diverse, large, modern city that contains what were once the tallest buildings in the world, the Petronas Towers. For me, it's been a place of confusion and complications. Here's my story, and I'm sticking to it! :) ...I left Singapore Monday morning on a train bound for Kuala Lumpur. The first set back was minor. Crossing the Malaysian border I found that I didn't have my customs departure card given to me upon arrival in Singapore (I vaguely remember throwing it away - nice move on my part). Not a big deal...just a slight delay with more paperwork. I arrived at the K.L. train station around 8:00 at night, and it was raining and stifling hot (not a good combo). I found a taxi but had no hotel ... read more

We admit it. We've been very bad about posting lately. Sorry to all that may have worried. You now get a longer than usual edition for your reading enjoyment. The good news is that even though we arrived in Asia the day after the Lunar New Year (January 28), the celebration continued through this week. The bad news is that everything has been closed for the public holidays (we've had a real habit of hitting public holidays). This has made finding Internet a challenge. Chris also spent about 4 days trying to find an open medical clinic that could do her monthly blood test for her medication. After being turned away from 4 hospitals because of the public holiday, she found one this morning. She feels a great sense of accomplishment and got to know Singapore ... read more

Well thats what the tourism office says. We are now in KL after heading south through Thailand to the eastern Islands of Koh Tao amd Samui. Very wet there and not to much of a nice beach so headed to the west coast and went to Krabi then Raily beach. A bit nicer there but still quite a bit of rain. We then headed further south into Malaysia and Penang. Malaysia is very developed but the Malay food is not that good and you need a bank loan to get drunk , so no alcohol for us for the past 3 weeks!!feels like a lot longer though! Gorgetown was old and OK . We left there and went to a great Island called Palau Pangkor . Saw sme wild life and worked on the tan. The ... read more

WARNING: If your name is Suyoko, you shouldn't read this blog. You know why. Back in KL! It was a bit of a whirlwind trip getting from Phnom Penh to here, but we managed to cut it by spending one night in Siem Reap, a few days in Bangkok, and a couple days in the Cameron Highlands. The bus trip back to Siem Reap from Phnom Penh was much nicer than that ear-splitting trip the other way. We managed to stay overnight at some anonymous guesthouse in Siem Reap (the place is filled with them) before catching a taxi to the Thai border. At $15 USD for both of us, the taxi was more comfy than a bus and faster along that awful stretch of road, even with four people packed in the back seat! Interestingly, ... read more

first update: I'm in KL! Flights were good this time and in the evening I just relaxed, went to the night market in Chinatown were my hostel is, had dinner and 2 Tiger beers (good stuff). The hostel I stay is good, all facilities for not a lot of money. (5Euro/night) However still suffer a bit from a jet lag so around 4AM I looked in my Rough Guide what to do the other days.... @8 breakfast, slightly different: noodles and rice. Bought some banana's @ the local market and then went back to the hostel to prepare myself for my citytour. During my 'after breakfast smoke' I met Megan, a nice Canadian girl who is traveling on here own as well and is in Malyasia for a week. So we decided to make a joined ... read more
