I woke around 8:00am but Bec was still asleep so I figured I’d get a little more kip in. The next time I woke it was just before 10:00am and Bec was awake. We got up and Bec headed to the gym, I headed to the pool. It was sunny and within minutes I was sweating up a storm. I was by the pool for about an hour before Bec joined me, and we were there maybe an hour longer before we decided to go and get some lunch as we'd skipped breakfast. We wandered down to our newly discovered massive food court on the bottom level of The Pavillion shopping centre where we decided on Subway and a Boost Juice. After lunch we headed back to the pool for a bit longer, it had clouded ... read more

We started today literally before the crack of dawn. The alarm was set for 6:30am as I wanted to walk down to the beach and take some photos of the sunrise. It wasn't as pretty as we thought it may have been, but it was nice to be up at that hour anyway; it was very peaceful and a nice way to spend a couple of hours before the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur. We took some photos and found some weird and wonderful and slightly terrifying sea life, then slowly made our way back to the hotel. We went back to the room for about 20mins then decided to head for breakfast seeing as though we were up anyway. After breakfast we made our way back to our rooms, packed up our bags and ... read more

Although they are neighbouring countries, Singapore and Malaysia are very different. Singapore has been greatly modernised, whereas Malaysia still has the Asia feel about it. Kuala Lumpur is undergoing a vast amount of building at the moment. They are apparently extending their metro system by thirty one stations. This will be great when it is finished, but is causing chaos whilst it is ongoing. The cost of living in Malaysia appears to be really cheap. Again, our hotel was in a great location so we had local restaurants nearby. The touristic areas were only a bus ride away. Kuala Lumpur runs a free bus service that runs in four loops. Most of the buses run every 5 – 10 minutes, and all looked to be very busy. But it was clean and the bus drivers were ... read more

When we made all our original booking for the holiday, we booked for afternoon tea at Atmosphere 360 which is the revolving restaurant at the top of the Menara KL tower. It was booked for 3.20pm tomorrow, but as we leave early on Tuesday, we had a quick re-think and have changed the booking to High Tea instead today. We were going to be truly amazed on all counts with this. The Menara KL Tower was opened in 1996 and is 421 metres tall. It is the 7th tallest freestanding tower in the world. The observation deck is 276 meters above ground level. We grabbed a rare lay in and then left the hotel about 12.30 for the mile and half walk to the KL tower. The walk was a real test in the intense humidity. ... read more

Today we are going on our trip to the elephant sanctuary and Batu caves booked through the hotel yesterday. We got picked up from the hotel about 9.30am and find that we are the only ones on this mini bus so have a personal guide for the day. In return for paying for this and our hotel transfer, we have been offered a free trip but alas time is running out. We really like the Malaysians and their relaxed stress free way of life. First stop was to a pewter factory. Not quite sure why we stopped there as it was not on the agenda. After the five minute tour, we were ushered into their shop where they proceeded to try to sell us anything and everything. Maybe that is why we were there – to ... read more

Before we leave the hotel today, we booked up our trip to the elephant sanctuary and Batu caves for tomorrow. We also booked our hotel transfers to the airport for Tuesday. Today we have prepaid tickets to go up the Petronas Twin Towers. These are now the highest twin towers in the world. Kuala Lumpur runs a large free bus service that was originally designed for workers, but is now advertised for all to use. It was put in place to try to keep traffic congestion to a lower level, but it does not appear to be doing that. One of these free buses stops is just around the corner from our hotel, and then just around the corner from the twin towers. We thought it would be an ideal opportunity to try out their buses. ... read more

George is feeling a little better this morning, but we have cancelled our planned visit to Batu Caves, as it will probably be too much for him. Instead we are going to use another of the vouchers for the hop on hop off bus and stop at some of the areas we did not stop yesterday. On the way out, we stopped at the hotels tour desk. They do a trip to the elephant Sanctuary that also includes Batu Caves. They want paying in cash and we do not have enough on us for this, so we will see him in the morning. Also starting to look at our journey back to the airport. Asked at the tour desk how much they would charge for the hour long journey. 116 ringgits for both of us – ... read more

After a restful day yesterday, we thought we would take the hop on hop off bus tour around the city. We have bought an entertainer book of buy one get one free vouchers for Malaysia, but are coming to realise that they are hard for us to use. Fortunately, we have already made enough savings in Dubai to completely pay for the books we purchased for Singapore and Malaysia too. It was also hard to use these vouchers in Singapore too. So far we have saved £140 over the cost of the three books. Thankfully they have a page of vouchers for this bus, so at least we can use one voucher, which is more than we managed in Singapore. The bus was almost empty when we got on it, so we chose seats in the ... read more

Today has been the subject of an immense amount of debate and planning changes with regards to how we would make the journey. Initially we had planned to take the train. We thought it would be nice to see some of Malaysia. Unfortunately, in July this year they changed the route for this, and it now leaves from Malaysia and not Singapore. This makes in impractical for us with the number of bags that we have. Then we thought we could take the bus which is about a ten hour journey. Just prior to when we started our travels, we heard of some people having a nightmare with the various coach companies doing this trip. So we decided that we would fly instead. We found a deal with Air Asia that covered all our baggage, a ... read more

This year, I decided I wanted to glam it up for my birthday. Kuantan is lovely, but it's not terribly exciting. A friend and I had been talking about doing a joint party since we have the same social circle and our birthdays are only two days apart. Another friend suggested we move the party to KL since we were having trouble coming up with a fun idea. And thus, the plan was hatched. The plan was simple: August 31 is National Day, and celebrations were planned for Aug 30. Including fireworks. We decided to maximize the opportunity. A nice, small group of us met for a fabulous sushi dinner and then went to a bar on a helicopter landing pad! We had great views of the city (including the towers) and a bird's eye view ... read more
