We cannot really say the reason why - but we love this city. Every time we are there, it is different but equally amazing! In general, we are not big city fans. Normally, we prefer nature and quiet spots. But from time to time it is also quite nice to spoil yourself with some big cityoffers, right? There are some big (and smaller) cities in this world, we really like: Buenos Aires, Madrid, Cape Town, Wellington..... well, and Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is not exactly a pretty city. But it is an incredable mixture of culture and religions. In all the different parts of town there is a different vibe and it is changing all the time. So here we were again! Ready to have an amazing time again. And so much about the changes. When ... read more

Saturday 10th September, 2016 We began our journey to Malaysia by leaving a cold and wet Melbourne at 6.45am. We sadly said goodbye to Mango at home as we couldn’t take him in the car with us to the airport as Gav was dropping us off on the way to work. It was very hard to leave him as we know he won’t understand where we’ve gone or that we’ll be away so long etc! The airport check-in and customs etc went very quickly and smoothly – I’m sure this gets better each year that we travel! The flight itself seemed very quick even though it was close to 9 hours. It was full of kids but they weren’t any trouble at all – actually quite entertaining! We watched a couple of movies and before we ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684After a final yummy breakfast at the fancy Perdana Hotel in Kota Bharu, we drove for close to 8 hours across the East-West Highway, which wound round and round many mountains. We searched for the mighty gajah but didn't see any, just the crossing sign warnings. We arrived in K.L. around 4 to the same hotel we started at - and where we had left the NZ suitcase. After a re-sort, we drove south to meet Joseph and Anita Pragasam, dear friends from Marriage Encounter, whom we met in 1999 and 2002. They suggested a North Indian restaurant. What a wonderful way to end our 2 weeks in Malaysia. It is so much easier to get around with the GPS on Jean's phone - best $40 we ever spent, buying the SIM card and month's time ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684It truly is amazingly hot.By the way, last night the Malaysians took silver in the men's doubles in badminton - so we did not hear the final roar from 15 stories below last night. We were too tired to drive south to Kajang for famous satay food court, so we ate in the restaurant connected with the hotel, and then walked around along with thousands of others. These people know how to dine alfresco!Today we went to FRIM, another attempt to enjoy nature. Sadly the canopy walk was fully booked, and you couldn't walk the jungle trails without a guide ($$$$$) but we enjoyed seeing the enormous trees, some monitor lizards, a few birds, 2 traditional Malay houses, a museum. Getting there with our new gps was a breeze, as was finding excellent ice ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684We were up at 4:30 am, wondering what excitement was happening 15 floors below our window - police car? crowd? Just one of the local popular clubs letting out!! Well, we were wide awake, so we updated our records, checked emails, etc. Walked out and bought SIM card for Jean's phone so we could have GoogleMaps and never get lost again - all for only about $20.After breakfast, headed East to Ampang to search out small park known for birds and monkeys. Not quite what we expected :( but everyone you ask for directions or info is very helpful, if they speak English of course. We chatted for a long time with this family, who explained that the park had seen better times. A few families were still enjoying the stream but no jungle ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684We woke up refreshed for our first breakfast at hotel. Joseph and Anita had a funeral so didn't pick us up till 11ish. We headed out to find a card for the phone (to enable us to use Google maps on my phone) and changed our old Singapore dollars for Malay currency. What a mixture of people and places near by, from a little girl weeing in the gutter, and laundry hanging everywhere, to highrises. Joe & Anita confessed to never having EVER been to the Bird Park, which boasts the largest free-flying aviary - so most birds were not in small displays. Saw the show with clever parrots and macaws, and just wandered around. Can we "count" these on our list of bird-watching :) ???Then we headed to the "Central Market" for lunch ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684We are so spoiled by Thai airways, where all foods are served on real china, real cutlery, etc. 2 hour flight from Bangkok to KL. Rented the small car and headed north. The map we have is useless. We discovered all roads are tolls. Quite a challenge to find out hotel as the big roads dumped us into the city at a place we couldn't find on the map. Finally stopped a second time to ask directions and an angel named Claudia offered to lead us there in her car. Crazy traffic. Great "service hotel" meaning we have 2burner stove, fridge, plates, etc. Not that we are going to cook! Joe and Anita are most gracious and insist on paying for just about everything. (They are due to retire soon and promise to visit ... read more
