Today has been the subject of an immense amount of debate and planning changes with regards to how we would make the journey.
Initially we had planned to take the train. We thought it would be nice to see some of Malaysia. Unfortunately, in July this year they changed the route for this, and it now leaves from Malaysia and not Singapore. This makes in impractical for us with the number of bags that we have.
Then we thought we could take the bus which is about a ten hour journey. Just prior to when we started our travels, we heard of some people having a nightmare with the various coach companies doing this trip.
So we decided that we would fly instead. We found a deal with Air Asia that covered all our baggage, a snack on the plane, access to the lounge before the flight and a coach into Kuala Lumpur after the flight. This package was Asia Air’s Red Carpet.
The lounge at the airport was really excellent, and it was good to grab some breakfast, as we had left the hotel early without any breakfast. There was alcohol available, but it was a
bit too early for that, although it looked like some people did not agree with us.
Air Asia is very much like Easyjet in the UK. Everything you want you have to pay for, but with only a one hour flight we were not too worried about that.
The food that we had already pre-ordered turned up hot and was very tasty. It was presented with a beaker of water, so no need to buy another drink.
The flight was very smooth. As we flew over various areas of Malaysia the pilot explained where we were, not that anything was very clear due to the haze. Cruising at just 24,000 feet.
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport, (KLIA) we found the coach transfer point easily and within about an hour and a half of landing we were checking into our hotel. Kl is very different to Singapore.
Whilst travelling in the coach from the airport, we noticed that it was raining. We did not remember seeing this on the forecast when we looked earlier in the morning.
We had a very informative taxi driver for our short journey from the coach terminal to the hotel.
We explained to him that we had not expected it to be raining. He explained that it was man made rain. We both thought, initially, that he was joking. Until he explained that apparently they spray chemicals into the clouds to make them create rain to try to clear some of the haze caused by the fires in Indonesia.
With the free night that we got earlier in our break, we have decided to upgrade our hotel here and are now in the Citrus Hotel with access to their club room. The Wi-Fi internet actually works properly.
After unpacking, we headed out for some local food and found a food place serving Indian food just around the corner. All food was being cooked in the open air and smelt really good. Also most of the people eating looked to be Indian which we thought was a good sign.
We ordered two main dishes, a rice, two naan bread and two cans of soda. Came to less that £5.00. Think our £75.00, (500 Malaysian Ringgits), is going to go a very long way this week.
