Nick: Well, after almost six months of travelling around the world we are finally here at our last stop before we return home to England: Kuala Lumpur. After all of the cheap hostels, hotels, lodges and guesthouses we'd frequented during our trip, we had decided to splash out and live it up in some plush accommodation for our final few nights...and our initial research showed that Kuala Lumpur - or 'KL' as most people call it for shorthand - was just the city to provide a little bit of luxury! The city frequently draws comparisons with Singapore, for the towering buildings found in the city centre and abundance of upmarket bars and restaurants. With plenty of big money sloshing around the city, there were an abundance of fancy hotels to choose from; in the end we ... read more

Every time I return home from a trip overseas I tell myself that next time ill spend a little more on a nicer airline, though when Jetstar is offering flights from Christchurch to Singapore for $300 I cant really pass that up. The only catch with that generous price is a twelve hour stopover in Melbourne in the middle of the night. Thankfully Cohan was willing to splash out for a motel which certainly bet my idea of sleeping in the airport. Once we arrived at the motel the next thing to do was partake in a well needed bourbon, so after a few bourbons and some hopeless Aussie TV it was time for some spotlighting at the park just out the back of the motel, we weren't really expecting much but we were kind of ... read more

My colleague Tishal from Kuala Lumpur had invited me to her wedding with her fiancé Sunil in Kuala Lumpur. This invitation was very special and I felt super honoured to be invited. It was going to be a Punjabi wedding, and I was invited to attend four different functions across four days. She was expecting about 700 guests. I took four different outfits with me: A tunic that I had bought in India a few years ago; a Punjabi Suit I had bought in Hamburg; and two long gowns that covered the legs all the way to the ankles. I definitely wanted to be dressed appropriately! I booked a flight from Hamburg to Singapore and back because I wanted to take the opportunity to see my colleagues there as well. So I arrived in Singapore on ... read more

Gold Coast International airport is a fantastic convenience for us. Not only do we live near by but it's also so easy to get through customs as it's only a small airport, plus the price is cheaper? We departed at 9:30ish pm. A little late for the kiddies but it turned out well as Elsie fell asleep almost instantly in Nina's arms for take off and Agus just needed a book or three. We booked seats with a bassinet this time. Big tip.. After the seat belt sign goes on the flight attendant plugs the bassinet in to the wall. As per usual, you couldn't find a more uncountable thing to try to sleep in than an airplane seat, but I think we managed some on and off. Agus and Elsie woke up a little too ... read more

If you're waiting for one of those blogs that contains footage of us eating chicken brains or snake guts...you'll have to keep waiting. Perhaps, on one of our "obligatory vacations" to exotic India or Indonesia, we shall recount you with some wildly entertaining tale of eating deep-fried sea slugs or barbecued parakeet. But not today. No, today my mission is to simply have you take an enjoyable and scenic walk with us through KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Center). We've been here for almost two weeks, but until yesterday we hadn't actually journeyed into the heart of the capital. You're probably thinking that it's all fun and games over here, and don't get me wrong. We're definitely having fun. But I can also assure you that it's a lot of work. Trying to learn the local culture ... read more

As Harry and Lloyd once said: "We're...THERE!" (Except, whereas they were half frozen to death after riding a bike across a snowy Colorado pass, we have the unique sensation that our skin might actually melt off our bones from the oppressive tropical heat. Minor difference!) Anyway. Yes. Approximately 24 hours after our departure from New York, we landed safe and sound (and a little bleary-eyed) in our new home of Kuala Lumpur! The 16-hour flight from New York to Taiwan was actually not too bad! We flew EVA airlines, Taiwan's national brand, and the service, food, and level of comfort was exceptionally good. I even managed to sleep on-and-off for a few hours (this never happens to me). The coolest part was that instead of flying east over the Atlantic or west over the Pacific, we ... read more

When I told people I was going to Kuala Lumpur, there was one place where they say that the ultimate hostel was and that was Reggae Mansions and thats where I went even though they had an age limit of 50 years old due to it being a ‘party hostel’. Well after the lack of alcohol, thats what I needed and I got. The hostel itself was massive and just round the corner from where the long distance bus journey dropped me off. Again I tried to work out in my head how long I was going to stay as the journey around the world was slowing down and I knew that I had so many places still to go. I had shared the bus journey with 4 British girls and they were staying in the ... read more

Although we are still living a pretty lavish life style with a roof top swimming pool, rain head shower 28 story's up and a TV, we feel as though we spent the day becoming pretty cultured. Started the day fresh with a family session of skipping and TRX (which the pro made look easy) got our sweat on which never ceased the entire day. Our first activity was to catch a train (careful not to put josh on the ladies only carriage) to the Batu Caves were we learnt our first lesson 'to research what your going to look at' we have since read up to find that it is place of prayer and sacrifice for the Indian and Hindu religion of Malaysia. 272 stairs and a pretty sweet looking sarong later we found our selfs ... read more

Thank goodness I hadn't booked myself onto an early bus to Kuala Lumpur, as I was still shaky and not well when I boarded at 10.00am the next morning. Sitting in the bus terminal under Komtar, breathing in fumes and the lingering smell of cooked food from the eateries, certainly didn't help. The coach had big, reclining, armchair style seats, three per row, and I fell into mine with a sigh of relief. I took off my shoes, pulled my small pillow from my backpack and dozed the next seven hours away. The bus pulled into Puduraya Terminal in central KL around 5.00pm, and I was greeted by a huge clap of thunder and a few spots of rain as I left the terminal, in search of a taxi. I knew my accomodation was within walking ... read more
