Hello my fellow travellers! After a night with little sleep but plenty of laughter I have to admit that I only felt semi-ready to tackle the big KL! Rizqin dropped me off at the station and I took the train to the outskirts of KL, to the Batu Caves. Oh, one thing I forgot to mention from last night, people here really are friendly and there was no issue borrowing a phone to make contact with Rizqin as I was going by the commute, it also felt very safe even though it was in the middle of the night. People are very eager to help you out and they are genuinly interested in talking with you, no ulterior motifs or scams or anything, just pure socialising. I can tell you that my own image of Malaysia ... read more

Nun sind ... read more

Third world status is slippery to define. There's probably an official line of thinking centred around GDP, literacy rates and costs of living v average incomes. But as a layperson I run off a few more overt though less tangible stats. My last visit to Kuala Lumpur was way back in 1994. In that era I had Malaysia firmly planted in the third World. Yet simultaneously it boasted enough green shoots to suggest life was on the up and up. Fast forward to today and I'm fuddled as to where I might pigeon hole contemporary Malaysia. There is plenty to suggest it has morphed beyond 3rd world but is still hungover with sufficient earthy telltales to remind us 1st world brotherhood remains at arm's length. Let's take a peek at some of my sketchy criteria: RATS: ... read more

Kuala ... read more

The Batu caves have been on my list of places to visit for a while. I think it's the name more than anything. I made a stop here on my road trip before heading for home. It's sad to think my grand adventure around the Malaysian peninsula is coming to an end. (Except, of course, that my adventure wasn't over yet, thanks to the floods.) I found it easily and parked (for free!) and made my way in. It's one of the few temples I've been to that actually enforces the dress code, some come prepared. No knees, no shoulders, and no, a wrap isn't good enough. At least, it wasn't good enough for the lady telling off a few tourists that I happened to pass. I made my way up the stairs. All the stairs. ... read more

When my high school friend said he was coming to KL for a few days I knew I had to make the trip to see him. My original plan was that I'd be on a road trip and KL would be a stop. But since my passport was at immigration getting shiny, new visa stickers put into it, a day trip was all I could do--no hotels for me! I took the bus rather than drive. I wanted to have as much energy for time with my friend as possible. I didn't want to worry about getting tired, lost, or anything else. Plus, since I'd never been to KL, this actually allowed me to relax a bit more and just focus on the experience. We met up at KLCC, or the Petronas towers. They're probably the ... read more

So after our adventure beginning in Dubai we headed off early Saturday morning Dubai time and arrived at 11pm in KL. Sam was ill on Saturday night so not a great start and then the flight was the worst either of us have ever experienced in terms of turbulence!! When we made it back to ground - it was late and we really just wanted to hit the pillow! The airport is about 40 mins from the City Centre but luckily our taxi driver floored it the whole way there! Quick tip - get your taxi from the stand after baggage claim, you pay for a coupon once you tell the cashier where you are going, how many and size of luggage (ours was 102MYR). Then exit from door 5 and give the coupon to one ... read more

We had a very comfortable bus for our seven hour trip up to Kuala Lumpur - immigration proceedings took an hour of that time. The scenery was ordinary so we were pleased when we reached the outskirts of the city. However the city traffic was horrendous and it wasn't improved by the heavy rain which had started to fall. Eventually the bus stopped at the edge of a very busy street and we all exited into the heavy rain. There was no cover and we had no idea how close we were to our hotel. Thankfully we were able to wave down a taxi before we were totally soaked and were soon checking into the hotel. We had chosen to spend this weekend in style at the 5* Traders Hotel which is situated at one side ... read more
