Well, the last time we updated this blog we were leaving our 'Palace' in Kuala Lumpur and were heaving our backpacks back on (which seem to be getting heavier funnily enough), to venture up through Malaysia. A reasonably comfortable 4hr bus ride took us from the chaotic bus station 'Pudaraya' in KL to the peaceful town of Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands (centre of Malaysia). We had luckily prebooked accomodation as it was a suprisingly busy wee place. We rang Lonely Planets Our Pick place called 'Fathers Guesthouse' and booked ourselves into the more basic option - the Nissen huts'. These were old military huts built in 1956 for British, Australian and NewZealand soldiers. It was a very basic room with a shared bathroom (felt like we were camping), but it was clean with friendly ... read more

Perhentian Islands, Penang and Langkawi Our trip to the Perhentian islands started with typical confusion at Kuala Terraganu bus station where, we along with many other backpackers, had been told a bus to the jetty would definatly leave at 11.30am. After much searching and questioning, and with the time approaching 12, we were then told there was infact no bus! Oh well one hurdle to overcome before reaching what we hoped would be a place worth visiting! Even after paying the extra 20 quid to get a taxi we werent to be disappointed. The Perhentian islands are part of a Marine national park in Malaysia with pristine coral reefs and excellent sites for diving and snorkelling. This however was not our main reason for visiting, the islands famed quiet beaches and luke warm, clear waters ... read more

The Islands are located in the North-East of Malaysia (Mainland). We killed 5 Days with Snorkling and hang around on the Beach. On the Island its very hard to find Beer. Most of the Locals are Muslime. The don't drink Alcohol. But we find a Internet Cafe while we have drunk a bottle Jamaica Rum with a very funny German Couple (Greetings to Gerrit and Hanna). ... read more

It took me a day to get across Peninsular Malaysia from Penang to Kota Bharu, and I was rewarded with the worst hostel I've seen since India... the little family of rats living near the shared toilet (I'll use that word to describe both the WC and the shower room) being the highlight. Thankfully there was a cosy common room with free coffee and internet, so I sat out the evening there. Next morning, I caught a minibus to Kuala Besut, and from there a short and bumpy jet boat ride to Pulau Perhentian Kecil - the small Perhentian island. The Perhentians are a pair of islands which sit 21km off the coast. I'd chosen the smaller island, as the big island is more upmarket and has less of a backpacker vibe. On the small island, ... read more

We had to pull ourselves away from the Perhentian Islands so we could continue down the East Coast, so after breakfast we set off with Mee and his boat for the 21km trip across the South China Sea to Kuala Besut. Firstly, Mee’s boat was a single engine 12-18ft boat, onboard was Mee, a local chap, G and I (T)but unlike our two local travelling buddies we had no idea what we had let ourselves in for! After a precarious boarding at the unsightly pier, we set off at high speed, all is good, the sea appeared flat and calm. Ten minutes later and the sea swells are present, I (T) have never felt more like a floating bottle in my life, when our small boat descended down a swell, you couldn’t see the land in ... read more

It was a very early start for us, we firstly had to get a bus to Kuala Besut which is a small fishing village and the gateway to the Perhentian Islands. We got up at an ungodly hour of 6:15 and headed over in the dark to the bus station in time for the 6:45 bus (bus number 639) to Kuala Besut. Upon arrival at the bus station we were annoyingly followed by a taxi driver who kept saying “bus left at 6:15”, to our annoyance the ticket office confirmed this with the taxi driver going “see I told you”, that wasn’t the point we didn’t have 50RM to give him to drive us there so we ignored him and went back to our hostel and went back to bed for the 9:30 bus. Now the ... read more

After the cold days in the Cameron Highlands, I was really looking forward to get back into the sun. And the Perhentian Islands in the North seemed to be just perfect for that matter. We took a minivan to a place called Kuala Besut from where we took a boat directly to the smaller of the two islands, Kecil. Since it was already the end of the season, it was rather difficult to find an accommodation at the beginning, because most hostels and chalets were already closed and the open ones were full. I was afraid we would have to spend a night at the beach at first, but somehow we managed to find a free bungalow close to the beach. Kecil was a really special place full of atmosphere. And since there were so many ... read more
