We have stayed put on this island and are running the risk of becoming perfectly content, useless beach bums. There isn’t a whole lot to report other than the usual that one does on an island: swimming, sunning, diving, reading, kayaking, eating, drinking, etc. This hotel where we’ve now been for ten days must think us a bit odd since we are also using this portion of the trip to write a lot. With all still being deserted here (or maybe this is what it’s like busy?), the quiet and beauty make it a perfect place to write. Speaking of our hotel, Impiani, they did fill up the last two days with a group of Chinese who are here with HHH (a running club). Such a fun group. Last night there were races on the beach ... read more

Wow,we arrive at Coral beach on one side of the island to drop off some guests, peer over the side of the boat and look down at the crystal clear waters to the white sands 6 meters below…. I think we’re really going to like it here!! We’ve just had a nice 50 minute flight from KL up to Kota Bharu on Malaysia’s east coast followed by a 1 hour taxi ride to Kuala Besut where the boats leave for The Perhentian Islands, next we endured a 40 minute bumpy speedboat ride to arrive at Long beach on Pulau Perhentian Kecil where we stopped 50 metres from the shore and had to precariously climb into a tiny water taxi with backpacks in tow…..not an easy feat. This is to be our home for the next 9 ... read more

Back to the dirty streets of Medan and after a huge breakfast by the lakeside and a long wait for a boat pick up we started our journey across to the Perinthian Islands on the west coast of Malaysia. First of all we crossed the lake back to Parapat and with a better view of the “island” of Samosir. We spent much of the time figuring out where we had driven to on our epic moped trip 2 days before. Once in Parapat we were shoved onto a public bus with ample leg room and air-conditioning, but were soon told to swap to a different bus where Niks seat quite literally had no leg room so she had to become a gymnast and fold her legs over her head.! I also had a large box in ... read more

Suddenly our surroundings changed. One minute we were sat waiting for the mini bus to pick us up, surrounded by mountains, forest and a cool morning mist... the next being thrown out of our seats by the 2 metre waves on a speedboat to a desert island. The speedboat from Kuala besut to Kuala besar took us an hour and the guys in the port initially decided that due to the storms (it was peeing it down) there would be no more boats for the rest of the day. After waiting around for an hour we were on our way. The sea was rough and a few waves threw our rib cages painfully into other bits of our bodies. One or two people on the boat looked green, holding their heads between their knees and hoping ... read more

"Uh, buddy? That doesn't sound very good....I think you're leaking. You might want to have a look at your "O" ring." How nice of someone to have pointed this out to me with only having known him for 5 minutes. "Oh and while you're at it, don't forget to spit on your mask." You may have caught on to the fact that we were once again immersed, in all senses of the word, in SCUBA diving. This time around, our travels have brought us to the north east corner of Malaysia to the Perhentian Islands. After hopping a quick flight from Vietnam's capital of Hanoi to Malaysia's capital of Kuala Lumpur (it is abbreviated to KL over here) and topping up on some needed items for New Zealand's winter in KL's Chinatown night market, we got ... read more

... jatkoa edellisesta entrysta Perjantaina olikin sitten ilon ja onnen paiva. Nimittain Meitin rakkaat ystavat Sini ja Antti saapuivat piristamaan meidan elamaan. Aamulla treffattiin pariskunta kampan respassa. Oltiin pari pv aiemmin varattu heille kamppa samasta mokkikylasta meidan kanssa. Siella tyypit olivat ihmettelemassa respaa, kuten mekin ekana paivana. Respassa ei nimittain ole ketaan paivalla. Omistaja, Berry tulee kerran paivassa, kuuden aikaan illalla pariksi tunniksi pyorimaan mestoille ja kaynnistaa generaattorin, jotta mokkilaiset saavat sahkoa illaksi. Muutoin sisaankirjautuminen toimii itsepalveluperiaatteella. Niin rento mesta. :-) Sini ja Antti asettautuivat taloksi ja mentiin kaikki yhydessa aamiaiselle. Saatiin muuten jalleen ihaania karkkituliaisia koto Suomesta (mm sukulakuja ja dracula pillereita NAM). Taman jalkeen laitettiin uikat paalle ja mentiin ottamaan a... read more

Ennakkovaroitus: Tama tarina on suht pitka... Junamatka ethelan lampoon sujui ihan mukavasti. Yolla tuli herailtya muutaman kerran, kun juna tuntui poukkoilevan kiskoilla aivan holtittomasti ja ihan paatonta vauhtia. Aamulla herattiin seiskan aikoihin, kun paikalle polahti erittain agressiivinen sangynpetaajamies. Aamulla junassa alkoi rampata toinen toistaan pelottaavamman nakoisia sotilaita konekivaarit olalla. Kaveltiin asemalta Malesian rajalle. Rajamuodollisuudet menivat ongelmitta ja pian oltiinkin Malesian puolella. Pyorittiin hetki mestoilla ihan uunoina. Yritettiin etsia yosijaa, pankkia ja ruokaa. Mitaan naista kolmesta ei kuitenkaan loytynyt, joten paatettii... read more

Firstly I'm in the most annoying, headache inducing place in the whole of Malaysia, possibly the whole of Asia, which up until now has been very tranquil and zen. The internet cafe is also some sort of computer game cafe, full of adolescent boys playing war games - feel like I'm in about 3 different war zones at once. Took an overnight bus here, wasn't too bad, 10 hours though and I put my trousers on backwards then couldn't change them round. Luckily they weren't a pair of jeans or anything, else that would really be retarted, they were sort of the Malaysian equivalent of tracksuit bottoms, a bit like harem pants which I hear are all the rage at home but seeing as I'm unaware of what is and isn't cool anymore I wouldn't know. ... read more
